strange stalk on coral, help with ID?

strange stalk on coral, help with ID?

I'm extremely new, I have bought 3 corals from my lfs and one of them has a strange stalk on it. It was there when I bought it but after researching I can't work out what it is, or how to describe it to google in order to get the result I need, here is a picture:

It doesn't seem to be part of the coral although it looks like it's attached to it. Does anyone know?

Is it soft or hard? Looks like it could be a sponge
