Smithii Mantis Shrimp looking for a home

Postby mattw » Thu 03 Jan, 2019 10:00 am

Hi everyone and happy 2019,

I have been living with a mantis shrimp for a couple of years now, and have been in two minds about removing (or attempting to remove) him. I believe it's a Smithii Mantis Shrimp - a couple of shots below are about the best I have managed, although I do have some video footage.

He's roughly 3 inches long, and is starting to get a bit bolder - we see him coming out a bit more often now. It's an awesome creature to watch - he's jet black, except for the interesting markings on his head and front arms.

Sadly I think it's time for him to go - too many unexplained happenings that I'm putting down to the little fella. I'd also like to look at some slower moving fish in the tank, which I would never do with him in there. For now, assuming that I can catch him, I'll possibly throw him in the sump, but I would love to find a proper home for him, if anyone is interested. I'm thinking of putting an ad up on Gumtree to see if there's any interest. Not sure on the price, but there are a few online US stores charging $50-80 USD for similar.

We live in Sydney's northwest - I wouldn't want to attempt shipping, so the new home would have to be local-ish.

Anyway, let me know what you think, or if you might be interested in taking him off my hands.

Regards,
Matt

Hi everyone,

A quick update on this post... I have managed to capture the little critter, with the help of my son, and pulling apart my tank in the process!

He's now contained in the sump, in a small breeding container. I don't want to keep him in there for too long, so I'm hoping to find a home for him soon.
