Aquarium Research Study - Have Your Say!

Postby AquariumTradeURI » Fri 14 Sep, 2018 11:30 pm

Hello! My name is Larynn Cutshaw and I am a Master of Arts in Marine Affairs candidate at The University of Rhode Island. I am working on a thesis project to learn more about hobbyist preferences for aquarium organisms like fish, corals, and other invertebrates.

I would like to invite you to participate in a 15-minute survey and have your say about organisms in the aquarium trade! Anyone who is 18 years or older and currently owns an aquarium (saltwater or freshwater) or is considering purchasing an aquarium is eligible to participate.

This study has been approved by The University of Rhode Island Institutional Review Board. Your participation is voluntary and all answers will be confidential. The survey will not ask for any identifying information (like your name or contact information), but your IP address will be recorded to prevent anyone from making multiple submissions.

I very much appreciate your help with this study. Should you have questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at AquariumTradeURI@gmail.com or private message me through the appropriate means on the forum. You may also direct questions or concerns to my advisor, Tracey Dalton (University of Rhode Island, Department of Marine Affairs) at dalton@uri.edu.

The closing date of the survey is September 28, 2018.

I look forward to your response and I thank you for your participation!

Best,
Larynn Cutshaw

How likely are you, Larynn, to participate in an activity with the purpose of either closing down the aquarium hobbie or greatly restricting access to organisms captured / collected for the aquarium hobbie?

Hi, TbyZ. I will not publicly state my opinions on the aquarium trade in order to preserve the integrity of the survey by reducing biases. However, I invite you to start a private conversation if you would like. In short, I think you will find my beliefs to be quite different than you predict them to be.

Ok, are you a member of an animal rights and/or an environmental organisation.

ps, your private responses will bias my survey responses only as much as your public responses here on this forum, so your should be open & honest & answer my first question, please.

TbyZ, I am not currently a member of either an environmental or animal rights organization, but a researcher whose purpose is to remain neutral on the topics.

As I stated above, I will not publicly share my personal opinion as to prevent others who intend to participate in the survey from being persuaded by my opinions but I do welcome you to start a conversation privately if you are truly interested. Assuming you have already taken and submitted the survey, your responses cannot be compromised by bias from me sharing my opinions with you through private message. If you have not taken the survey, I recommend that you do so before prematurely reaching conclusions about the research team's intentions or the implications of this study.

I will share publicly that the study's purpose is in no way to close or restrict the aquarium hobby and instead hoping to better understand the industry in hopes to preserve it.

I hope this may clear up some misunderstanding and once again I welcome you to contact us through alternative means if you would like more information.

I started the survey but quit when questions were asked that made me very suspicious of the intentions of the survey.
What actions do you envisage using to "preserve" the hobbie?

TbyZ, I have invited you to privately create a dialogue about the true intentions of the survey but you have declined. Thank you for your time and interest in our project and I wish you the best.
