looking forward to seeing this beast develop Michael. Not sure how committed you are with those pics but you may want to rethink your light and hood combo as the weight might be an issue when you lift the lid to do anything. oh and remember to wear shades as 4 haldes facing you when lifting the hood is going to be bright to say the least on you..

Schmick! Love the 316 stainless stand already without seeing pics.

Did you source the Panworld pumps locally?

 Thanks guys, I was a little apprehensive in starting a TJ so I really appreciate the encouragement. This baby has been months in planning, and i've literally travelled across the country to build my dream tank.

Thanks boys. It's generousity like this that makes our hobby great! However, having met you both, and seen those skinny arms (along with mine). They'll be 3 of us on one corner of the tank come lift time. :roflmao:

Hey Marcus, thanks buddy (trust the analyst!!). The ballast for my MH's will be in the electrical compartment under the tank. So just the reflectors and T5 lighting will be on top - very lightweight. As for blinding myself ... I dont envisage lifting the hood too often, and when I do, i'll try time it when the halides are off.

FLOW

I decided to use a Gyre flow closed loop, based on Rod the Reefers (thanks again for all your help, Rod). The pumps I chose were 4 x PanWorld 250PS-MD100R External Water Pump 7200LPH with 8 x Flow accelerators (Flow x 400%). These are the biggest in the Panworld Range, I've heard a smaller version live in action, and they are very quiet. Amazing how big and heavy these beast are though.

Each pump will feed 2 outlets. I've designed the output holes in the display tank and the placement of the each pump (mounted on the stand), so that each output has the identical length and elbows of plumping, so that each output has a same amount of flow coming out.

2 pumps will run simultaneously, then flick off by timers. The other 2 pumps will then turn on, changing the current in the opposite direction. Creating a whirpool effect. I'll consider a storm period where all pumps are on simultaneously. But I'll be taking a "wait and see" approach to this, as I fear for the paint of my ceilings should things get too wild.

I've killed too many corals over the years by placing them directly into the flow, so with the use of the "flow accelerators" i'll be pointing the flow of each output, angled into the glass as discribed in the flow pattern diagram below.

Thanks for reading. Stay tuned ....

The Tank

I chose a 8 x 2.5 x 2 12MM Euro Braced Starphire tank to be made by St George Aquariums. I must say thier service, price and quality is brilliant.

I also asked St George to make my QT - 3 x 3 x 1.5 10MM Euro Braced Starphire - again a beautiful finish.

Both tanks are now sitting in my garage - i'm away for the week. If my wife catchs me on MASA during holidays, im cactus. Soon the real fun begins ...

Very sweet tanks Michael.

What is the width of your Euro?
I went with a 120mm wide brace on my 6.5ft, maybe a bit overkill... but the brace is all flush with the top glass and butt joined.
I am surprised they did a euro on an 8ft tank, but its very nice indeed. Sweet sweet access!

You should have put the QT starfire money towards starfire braces on the DT... :poke: :roflmao:

Hey Derek, the bracing up top is 120MM by 24MM glass, and the base of the tank is also braced by 12MM strips. The bracing on my last tank really annoyed me (salt creep, algae, access) so I was big on this one begin Euro. I'm pretty confident this will hold :crossfingers:

Cheers again, Shannon. It's real encouraging so I appreciate it. Must say, the information ive taken from other members TJ's has been priceless. I hope mine can oneday help someone else too.

One Crazy Nut!! :roflmao: Hey Edi, the QT will oneday (hopefully) turn into a frag tank of some sort. Supprisingly the starphire wasnt that much more expensive than standard, that's why I went down that path (thats what I told the Mrs anyway). Re: Mag test kit, yes, It was me :roflmao: I'll drive it out to you, buddy, (please! im hanging to check out your new beast. as soon as i'm back i'll give ya a buzz.

Ahh that makes sense, I only have one layer of 12mm glass on top. Also braced on the bottom I think. I am sure yours will hold with 24mm bracing.
