Ree's 6x2x2 closed down

Postby Ree. » Thu 19 Nov, 2009 4:25 pm

Introduction:
Hi everyone thought I would start a tank journal
I am from bathurst and have a 6x2x2 reef tank
and a 2x2x2 with cichlids
I am a mother of 2 Katelyn 7 and Georgia 5
I have been breeding electric yellows, demasoni, kingsizie and lionscove cichlids for a while but everytime we went to the lfs and saw the marine we were just dying to do it
so we have bit the bullet and the 6x2x2 has been running for 3 months

System Type: Mixed Reef

Display System:

well I did some of the newbie mistakes and thought it would be ok 8 weeks in added some live rock, fish and coral and water from a running tank that we bought but it was only a 2x2x18 and not enough of a boost for the 6ft
so as things started to go down hill I put all my corals at a friends house
and worked on getting tank better and for the cycle to complete
my husband built a better sump as we only had bio ball set up

The new sump is still not very big but is set up better with dividers in it for protein skimmer, dsb, macro, live rock and return pump

adding another powerhead and changed inlet to stop micro bubbles

we have been through the brown diatoms, hairy algae some bubble algae and some cyano hopefully most of that will go away soon

Tank is starting to look more happy
I have a toadstool in there which is opening beautifully

current stock is
fish
1 blue tang
1 flame angel
1 bi-color angel
1 royal dottyback
1 common clown
2 black and white clowns
2 baby stripey's
1 stromb snail
some snails and hermit crabs

corals
1 toadstool
1 quadricolor bubble tip anemone
1 blue xeina
3 fluffy morphs
1 trachy
and a few different zoas

corals being housed else where for now
1 brown hammer
1 green hammer/frogspawn cross
1 purple tip anemone
1 elegance
1 torch
1 sun coral
1 pin cushion
and some duncans

Strike up Date: August 09

Display Tank: 6x2x2

Display Lighting: Aqualina compact 4x 96w white and the
blue 420nm
and a 150w metal halide over the main part of reef

Stand: white cabinet

Hood: open hood

Sump: 2x2x18

Support systems:

System Water: artificial salt water

Display Water circulation: 1x 3000 1x 5000 and just buying 1x 6000
powerheads

Return Pump:

Skimmer: might be an aquaworld 510 not sure does the job

Evaporation Top Up:manual

Chemical Support:

Calcium Addition:

Alkilinity Addition:

Other Chemical Maintenance:

Current Water Chemistry:

Hi guys
It has been a while since I updated
I have just had whitespot which was devasting I did everything I could but lost all my fish.

So why waiting for things to get back to normal and there be no more whitespot in my tank, I have been making my tank look and work a little better
I added a lot more rock probably to much but will change that later on down the track when things are more established
I have add some more corals and a cbs
things seem to be looking up
So here is a load of pictures to see what I have done
thanks Ree

Hey ree,
sorry to hear about your white spot troubles, but good to see you are bouncing back and keeping going.
Just a quick comment, the tank is starting to look like a rock wall, try moving some so there are big swim thru for the fish and also some sand patches for all those things that love the low light and sandy areas, otherwise keep at it and have fun
cheers

thanks Peter
I was thinking the same thing myself as I only have a little sump we did
put in a lot of rock and more than I wanted as someone in bathurst closed
their tank down so I added it all to the tank till it had matured a bit more
but as everything is happy and going well now I am nervous to touch it and take some of the rock out
I will look at doing it soon
thanks Ree

Well peoples it has been a while
I have reaquascaped twice I am now happy with it
I got stung by some zoas in the process which I now have a scar on my right arm
My arm swelled up like a ballon with welts and my pinky was so swollen I couldn't move it
I went to hospital and had a Tetanus shot and antibiotics for 10days
I have full length gloves now

Image
This is how it looks now pretty good
thanks Ree

I wish this frogspawn would keep it's intense green when expanded

we then ventured to the sydney fish coral export or what ever it is called all the fish prices were on par with most lfs
how ever coral prices were fantastic picked up some morphs, scolly and heliofungi
