K&D's 9ft in wall - Evil pink snails (Feb 2012)

Postby stoli » Sat 09 May, 2009 12:16 pm

Introduction:
It seems like larger tanks are pretty popular at the moment :) David & I started our first marine tank in 2003 with a standard 3ft tank. When we moved from our unit we found a house with a suitable wall for a 5ft tank. We both get a lot of pleasure out of watching a happy tank so we started toying with the idea of a fish room when we renovated our house. The architect asked us if a fish room was like a large pantry but I replied, no, more like a small bedroom! After the initial shock wore off for the architect, the engineer and the builder we decided to go with a 9 x 3 x 2.5foot tank that is visible from the dining room. Last year we had our renovations approved by council & started building…

Greg Hammond from Effortless Aquaria is overseeing the build and helping us put the whole system together. The plan is to have a very simple maintenance regime.

Having said that, maintenance is going to be very tricky as the tank will be accessible from the sides and back only (in the fishroom). We also have relatively low clearance over the tank as the stand is so high. Things like cleaning the glass, coral placement and general maintenance have been considered but we are definitely open to ideas.

System Objectives: A stable healthy system with colourful inhabitants and lots of movement

System Type: Mixed reef

Water Change Tank: 3 x 2 x 2ft glass tank plumbed into system; 2 IBC's under house

Refugium: In bottom of water change tank

Great to see you've got the TJ going guys!
I love that whenever I ask you 'how are the renovations going?' the reply is always about the fish room - 'the slab is down', 'the framing's complete', pretty much the whole house is being engineered and built around the fish room - as a reefer's home should be!
Really looking forward to following this build - hopefully a lot in person!
Let me know whenever you need a hand!

I've almost finished the cabinet for the new tank.
Finally hinged the last of nine doors, still a lot of painting, electrical, plumbing, etc to go yet!
I should probably get the journal happening also....
Cheers,
Rob
