MILAN04's 3x2x2 (TOTM Winner Nov 2009) Shut down

Postby Sin » Sat 25 Oct, 2008 8:46 pm

Introduction:

I have wanted to start a tank journal for a while now and i am in the process of upgrading from a 4x18x18 to a 3x2x2. I have decided to have a go at DIY for most things on this tank and this TJ will also help me keep a record of the tanks progress over time. I have taken plenty of photos of my DIY stand and will take more as i progress.

System Type: I plan to have the tank setup a a mixed reef.

Display System:

Strike up Date: 25/10/2008

Display Tank: 3x2x2.

Display Lighting: 8x39w T5s and adding 1x250w Lumenarc.

Stand: DIY 3x2x2

Hood: Open top with a support to hold the T5 lighting unit.

Sump: 2x18x18

Chiller : CL450

Support systems:

System Water: Using ASW at the moment. (Too lazy to collect my own)

Display Water circulation: 1xVortech MP40w and 2xtunze 6045s

Return Pump:Eheim compact 3000+
Skimmer: Reef Octopus

Evaporation Top Up:Auto topup in progress

THE BUILD:

1. This is the tank stand and my first time attempting to build something out of wood but after hours of looking through other peoples tank journals i found some ideads of how to start.

LIGHTING:

The lighting is a 8x39w unit from Guppies but i replaced the bulbs with the following bulbs from Ausfrags and Reefinglife ( Thanks to SNAZA for giving me the bulb combo)

Pure actinic
aqua blue
blue plus
Fiji Purple
aqua blue
blue plus
Aqua blue

FRESHWATER TEST IN THE GARAGE:

FINALLY TODAY 25/10 WAS THE MOVE FROM THE OLD TANK TO THE NEW:

The mess in the livingroom.

Sump up and running.

FTS still a little murkey

There has been a fair bit of rain over the last couple of weeks so i decided to use ASW and the day before i setup 230l of salt water in my bath tub and 2 x 100l containers each with a heater and powerhead and 6.30 am started to pull down the old tank.

The biggest problem was that this tank was going in the same place as the 4 footer so i had to completly move livestock, equipment and setup the new one before relocating everything.

Still a long way to go but its a start.

Thanks for looking

Sin

I'm very happy with the light but am still getting used to the "No Shimmer" that the MH used to produce.

You have done a fantastic job on the stand!
In fact the whole system seems to have been well thought out.
I could only suggest a black or blue background and possibly a matching acryllic surround to hide the weir.

Well done.

Just a small update and to keep my tank Journal up to date. I still cant take proper photos as they look too blue or blury.

The Acros seem to be doing great under the T5 lighting and have gone from a brown (when purchased) to a dark purple and flouro green as is the spotted mandarin who seems to eat pods all day and doubled in size.

I also got an aquacultured clam for Christmas and its only approx 2cm at the moment. The photo of it below is taken next to my other clam which is approx 7-8cm in size.

FTS 23/12/08

Some sort of Zoanthid hitchhiker i got a while back. Its really red in the middle with a yellowish skirt.

New Clam.

That's it for now.

I just though i would post some updates and keep my TJ up to date.

Since my last update i have been trying to work out where my algae problems are coming from. bulbs are 5 months old, RO water for topups, fish are fed 1 cube once per day.Yet i have to clean the glass daily as it's taken over by brown algae and cyano on the rocks. I purchased a RO Phosfusion reactor and some rowaphos which seems to be helping.

I purchased a second vortech for the tank and managed to break another part on the original one but thanks to Pete its all fixed.

I also had my 4yo son hounding me for his own tank and i purchased a BR400 from Darren and instead of running it seperate i built a shelf off my cabinet it shares the same sump as my 3x2x2, this will eliminate the need for a second chiller in summer. So far the BR400 has a firefish, sexy shrimp, pepermint shrimp and a goby leaving only corals to be added.

Below are some photos of the main tank and the new addition. i would have taken more photos but my camera skills lack a fair bit.

Thats all for now and thanks for looking.

You've done so amazingly well, can't believe you've never worked with wood before. It looks great, as does everything else =) Lucky my boys aren't sitting here reading that, they've been hounding me for a tank for ages. Didn't quite think of running it of the main tank. Good idea =)

Your tank size is very similar to mine apart from mine being a bit deeper.

How are you finding the Vortechs and if you don't mind me asking what setting have you got them on and how far have you got them dialed up to.

Just be interesting to get your opinion on them seeing as we both have very similar tanks (we are even running them in the same spot)

Steve,

I am running both pumps in anti sync on short pulse mode but haven't selected the pulse so its not creating the wave action. I am running both at about 80% as it seems to move the sand around if i have them flat out. Usually at night i change to 50% lagoon random mode.

I had them synced up but removed it as now i can run each pump on a different mode if i wanted to.

I noticed that the pumps seemed quiter placed on the back wall rather than the side and the water rebounding off the glass provides more movement in the corals.

I love how much water these things move and would get another 2 but then that would be crazy.

Cheers mate good to see someone with a very similar setup to me also gives me another person to bounce ideas of.

Yeah I am running mine at about the same levels as yours (80% to 90%) but in lagoon mode but unlike you I am not getting the movement across the bottom that I would like to see (and used to with the Seio's though it took twice as many to do it) probaly due to the fact that I have them a little higher (due to rock work) then you and my tank is a little deeper.

I was toying with getting a set of MP20's and running them in the bottom 1/3 of the tank this would be perfect I think in my setup giving me the movement across the bottom I want (but it would be insane)

Maybe I should try them in pulse mode and see how that goes.

Steve,

Yeah mine have a constant humming like noise and i have tried to adjust them without any luck. Thats why i run them at about 50% at night just befor the humming kicks in.

the only thing is that im not getting much flow behind the rockwork and have thought about running one of my tunze 6045's behind just to provide some flow.

Yeah same in regards to the flow behind the rock work I am running a Seio behind the rock work to flush the crap up out.

Like you said they move an insane amount of water and I love the functionality of the pumps but .... directional flow would be great (maybe I am being to picky)

I have mine set to night mode after 7 just to cut down on the noise one of them makes a constant growl which is annoying the other one is dead quite.

The Acros I have left love the movement the LPS aren't to thrilled but they are getting used to is.

Hey Sin, The tank is still looking great. I can't wait to see those acro's fill in.

It's a shame that algae is still plaguing you. It's the only thing letting you down. Hopefully it goes away soon and your tank will shine!
