Inferno's 4ftx24x20 (few more pics added Update 17/12/2007)

Postby inferno6688 » Wed 25 Apr, 2007 8:53 pm

Hey guys,
After at least over 6 months worth of planning, and building, i have finally started cycling my tank.
I started cycling with just fish food. thats been going for 2 weeks now, and no ammonia has been detected. I added 1 2kg piece of LR today.

Specs:
Tank 4ft x24"high x 20"wide, euro braced with single outlet in weir.
Sump: 3ft x 18x18"
Return: Hailea 3000L/hr. I am impressed with its quality and performance, cheap too!
Skimmer: DIY Beckett.
Lighting: Twin T8- will be fitting with artinics, and 2x150w MH shop fitters with Slyvania 10K bulbs.
now to the pics.... :)

I joined the 2 MH's into 1 unit with a length of aluminium angle.

Feel free to add both positive and negative comments. I am keen to know how i am improve it.

Update 13/5/07 LR added

Postby inferno6688 » Sun 13 May, 2007 6:32 pm

Time for an update.

My tank is now filled with LR. I got 23kg of cured LR from an established tank. Didn't get any ammonia at all!
so a week later i added 20kg of fresh LR. It's been 4 days now, and still no ammonia has been detected. i have nitrite and nitrate though.

This pic shows the current taken with all 55kgs of LR.

Now back to playing the waiting game.

Thanks mate,

Yeah i have started the skimmer. I am still playing around with the water height and air input settings to try and get the best results At the moment its a very very wet skimate. Also maybe there isn't enough crap for the skimmer to pull out yet.

Update:
It has been about 10 days now, and i still got no ammonia. about 0.025 nitrite, and 5ppm Nitrate.

Can you explain to me how the sump runs. (Bit of a newbie)

I cant quite make out the left hand side with PVC running into the glass boxes. I really like the look of the set up ( will copy a bit if you dont mind )

and the shelf is a gem, nice one. im pulling apart my computer desk as we speak :)

That's right. The left compartment is my Beckett skimmer. The middle is the return pump and heaters. The right hand section is the DSB/refuge area.
I used 1 baffle between the DSB and return section.
I used 2 baffles to act as a bubble trap between the skimmer and return sections.

Yes, it definitly is time for an update.
I have been slowly adding my corals. I have been very picky with what i buy!
Fish wise i now have 3 chromis, 1 Occy Clown, and 1 yellow tang.
Equipment wise i have now added an auto-top up. I have taken out the 2 Seios, and replaced them with a Tunze 6060.

Didnt you say that you dont have a tank journal? or am I just confused. What I really wanted to know though is how your DSB is working, as you have got yours really deep, Im in the process of changing mine to look like yours (sand only).
Is that a pink birds nest up there Chris?

i do have a TJ, i just never get round to updating it!! :konk:
Well i don't really know how well my DSB is working! My nitrates are constatnly at 7ppm, with fortnightly 15% water changes. I don't think the DSB is as live as it could be.

That sure is a pink birdsnest up there Thai! It wasn't very pink when i got it, and its only just recently started turning pink. Hopefully it will all turn pink
