Well its been a fun couple of years with my goldfish mates Carrot, Spot, Sprinkle, Jaffa, Flame, Heinz and Opal (RIP). Time to move onto the more challenging Marine Aquarium.

I started with a little research, not nearly enough though. Google lead me to masa, but excitment got the better of me and I was out purchasing after only a few days.

First purchase was a Jebo 180 Bubble factory for $75 (yes I know) as well as a Wet/Dry filter with Bio Balls. This filter was recommended by Ryan at the LFS. I also picked up some crushed coral and 4kg of marine salt.

8 Kilo of Live rock was also purchased.

Live Rock positioned. Coral bed layed. Tank filled using the plate method.

A red banded shrimp was swimming about for the first two days but unfortunately he died before my tank was safe for inhabitants. Which was a shame

Tank has been cycling for about 2 weeks now. Lots of micro bubbles and a little bit of moss like algae near the wet/dry filter on the Live Rock.

After reading some tips, I am going to remove the wet/dry filter and just run with the skimmer (which i will eventually upgrade) and a powerhead for circulation.

I decided not to skimp on the lighting and have an Aqualina Compact on its way ETA is monday as well as a Salt water test kit.

Im itching to get some life into the tank but I dont want to rush in and have a another fatality.

I have a couple of duster worms coming out of some of the LR. I also have two small corals which i am yet to ID but i think they are pretty common.

PICS to come soon.

Has anyone had any experience with mounting a hangon on skimmer onto the sump over the deep sand bed?

Time for an update
My parameters are as follows

Ammonia 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0
PH 8.2
Temp 25-26

I decided to add a fewe hardy fish to get the cycle going.

3 purple/yellow damsels were added. They are going really well. Although the largest one seems to torment the smaller ones quite a bit, but they are coping.

I have about 10 kilos of LR

I had to re-arrange as all my rocks were stacked on top of each other and only the top rocks were getting light. I broght the lwer rocks more towards the front and the upper rocks more towards the back allowing them all to be lit. Im still unhappy with the rock thats top/centre i will probably move it again soon, but im happy with the rest.

I got my first coral! Its a tubipora Musica "pipe organ" He's looking very healthy and has only been in tank for 12 hours. So hopefully thats a sign that my water quality is good!

Gday lads,
I am getting some micro bubble but its not excessive. I am working on a 18 x 10 x 10 sump and plan to hang the jebo off the side. With a bubble trap before the return pump. I hope to see my display tank completely clear of microbubbles in the near future.

I have added some LPS over the past weeks.
First was the tubipora musica.

Next was Favites flexuosa He is starting to go a little brown at the base. Research tells me that this is due to bleaching at the LFS, and browning is normal? Id much rather the bleached look. :pirate:

I was in sydney so I dropped into kyms Aquatics in ashfield. I was like a kid in a candy store! So much to look at! I only had 20 minutes to spare. I purchased 3 items from the "3 for $75" tank

Plerogyra sinuosa Bubble. I love this guy, really nice to watch. I might feed him a prawn tonight!
Image

Sinularia. Apparnently he can grow quite large. Ill have to keep an eye on this one.
Image

Theres one more too, but ill need it ID'd when i get a pic up.

Time for an update.
Each week i like to visit LFS's and bring home an item.
Here is my purchase from a few weeks back,l he's positioned nicely on the three pronged structure, although only two of the prnogs have life on them, the third has a skeleton that housed a third. He must have got too big and moved elsewhere or died. heone on the left is currently eating a praawn piece, thats why he has reduced his tentacles for now.

2 weeks ago i got this guy. He's a yellow based anenome. White body with purple tips. Im trying not to buy things that are a brown colour fom now on, as they make the tank look drab.

My next project is to get this acro to come back to life. I rescued him from LFS for cheap. I cant wait to see what colour he is when I fix him up.
He is getting good light, 20 cm from the light source and he is in a good flow area. Turnover is 15-20.

I ran a calcium and Magnesium test yesterday

I got 200 for Ca and 1350 for Mg

Time for some Kalkwasser!

Well its been a while.
Here is my Deltec MCE300 (turned off). IIm still not microbubble free with this unit, a little disheartning, so i made an outflow filter which eliminates about 70-80% of the microbubbles.

thanks for the nice words. I have come a long way from the old jebo days. I really wanted lots of colour and I tried to avoid buying brownish pieces of coral.

Im still a newb, for the first 3-4 months of the tank I was topping up only with NSW!!!!! I couldnt work out why all my corals were brown and why my SG was always over 1.030. I only realised by chance and rectified this 2 months ago. Tank been looking pretty good sine then.

The clowns took to the purple base anenome about 2 weeks after purchase, well the little on did. My bigger clown is obsessed with the 2 torch corals nearby, he must get the same 'buzz' from it as the anenome.

If your anenome is a yellow base, the clowns will not go near it (as far as i know)
