BC 2012 - Lets start a list of names

Ok, a couple of people may well be interested in a BC2012, so I thought about a 'concept' for it.

Promote knowledge and understanding of fish natural behaviour in relation to courting and spawning.

Some guidelines;

- Select any species you have not raised (this way species if not raised in BC2012 can continue in BC2013)
- Keep regular updates on behaviour (atleast once a month)
- Display learning in first foods
- More...?

Now we could (admin issue, or just add it to your sig.) have achievements awards like;

- Bronze == Spawn
- Silver == Larval hatch
- Gold == Trough meta

Perhaps if we could have a sponsor it could be chosen randomly from all eligible participants.

Just some thoughts to throw out there .

I guess my reasoning is, no one ever buys 1 clownfish. There are many others out there can be easily (so to speak) paired/harem in an everyday reef tank.

You don't need broodstock tanks to have a go.

What about a section where the emphasis is just on pairing and spawning. That could allow anyone to actively participate without to much drama. Species could be easy or hard. It could go as fare as collecting larvae/egg...... A lot of useful info would still be gathered along with getting people into the spirit of things.

Exactly. I would like to make it less clinical/academic and perhaps get people to think, "hey, instead of one, lets get a pair of centropyge and watch them interact".

i cant see the point of having "any" species as part of an annual breeders challenge. it may as well just be in the propagation and breeding forum with journals as it is now, therfore a less formal challenge. if people prefer we can change that forum around a bit and move the topics to there. dont get me wrong, i like the concept, just cant see it fitting into the traditional challenge.

the only reason it wasnt organised for this year is that after much debate etc for the 2010 challenge, not one person joined in.

I guess I wanted to throw it outside the box because historically a specific species challenge never attracts anyone.

Yes, this concept does move well away from the challenge, but is an attempt to change peoples attitudes towards keeping marine fish/inverts. It will also give recognition to those working on and providing information about there success (or failures).

Also, this is an attempt to get more people involved by just being able to use there DT and then using this information for Reefpedia.

I personally have shut down my broodstock tanks. I now have my DT setup and am looking at keeping larger fish that would not typically be kept in broodstock tanks as such anyway (Anthias groups, attempting to pair Purple Tangs). I have no expectations of raising them, but to observe pairing, courtship and hopefully spawning and this is what I would like to document myself.

But hey, I'm still looking for a midas blenny pair to add to the tank so if you pick these I'm in .

we dont have to stay with the "traditional" challenge thats for sure. as you say , its all about getting more people involved.

ive typed about 5 replies but cant decide. maybe its fatigue after 2 night shifts. all think about it later.

midas blennies are on my list as well. Ryan (mr blue) was trying them years ago.

Nah....but anything selected will be going into my DT.

Got a new shed going going up soon too which will be fully insulated so hoping to work on pod cultures (napulii for larval and adult for DT) next year .

maybe have two classes for blennidie , one for target species and another for all other blennidie . Might be a way to get more people interested if they can use what they allready have .
Update thread once a month , record info even if it seems not important to you as it might help others.
adding info to signatures I think is a good idea as well.

species specific, open challenge, combination of the two. we need a few more than 4-5 discussing though.

personally id prefer the single speices, but happy to go with a family ie blenniidae

Personally, I'd love to give the breeders challenge a go but being reasonably new to the hobby, I only have my DT (3ft) and QT (2ft) tanks. Would it be possible to go with a small species that one of the OLFS forum sponsors can provide/obtain at a breeding size to give people new to the hobby an opportunity to participate in the challenge?
Are there going to be two categories for breeders? Ie one category for inexperienced breeders (like myself who have not bred marine fish before and would like to give the challenge a go) and a category for people who have successfully bred marine fish in the past?

Hopefully this challenge can be a beginner friendly challenge

Midas Blennies sound like they are hard to get hold of, is there an easy way to tell if they are male or female?
I would be interested but sounds difficult right from the start.

I have a pair of scooter dragonets I hope will spawn, it would have been handy if some others wanted to use them as well,
I know they aren't part of the blennie theme though.

Hey guys!

Im a fairly new reef keeper but I would certainly like to give this a go they would be in my 3ft FOWLR though with other fish which isn't ideal but you never know! I would like to try to spawn bicolor blennies... Ecsenius bicolor. As they are cheap and readily available I would have to get two about mid feb though after my Japan trip.

I have a feeling it could be a long shot as even my paired oscellaris clowns haven't spawned yet.

Kinda coincidental but my male clown just started doing a lot of the 'mating dance' around the BTA she is always in would be cool of they did the deed, especially cause they are wild caught blacks with perfect bands

Im in for this, so far my successes have been with three pairs of clown species and I have a few other species on the go.

My biggest tasks will be determining sex and then growing them up.
