Roz 5x2x2 tank

Postby Roz » Sat 24 May, 2008 11:28 pm

Well here I am finally starting my journal ,the idea has been accumalating over several months Firstly removed a wall where the tank was to be ,then had to get all the gyprocking done . Next lay a concrete slab for the foundation as the floor was unlevel. While all this was going on the cabinet was being made.I finally got it all together ,which I might add at times I didn't think it was going to ever happen as one thing let to another, as I had to get the laundry plastered then tiled, paint before I could get the tank up and running so the paint didn't end up in the tank and also the fumes from the paint would have not been ideal for the tank then the time came to put the cabinet in place
<img src="http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk288/Roz3355/WALLFORTANK.jpg" width="600"></a>

What a mess I was in . I thought things could only get better
Next the cabinet finally got put onto the slab

The only thing I would change in that list of goodies is

3 hydor koralias k copy 5000

The thing with the copies is the shaft does seem to rust quite quickly. Other than that looking good

I wouldn't say that, the first bunch of them were having problems with shaft's rusting, however it seems recent ones purchased do not have this problem. Even if they do rust, there is a thread in the DIY forums on exactly how to change the shafts for very little cost.

I think the only 1's that rusted were the 1's from Ethan which were the paralel imported 1's to the best of my knowledge.

I am under the impression the 1's from AOA and Guppies have no issues.

Least thats my understanding.

Roz 5x2x2 tank

Postby Roz » Sun 25 May, 2008 11:43 pm

Here we go for the next update ,the sump which Scooby made for me and we hooked every thing to get me on my way.
Originally I used flexable coil hosing but found this wasn't any good for me as I couldn't get it to go on enough and ended up with leaks so I went to the irrigation shop and got some of their hosing and attached with marine stainless hose clamps at all connections which has proven to be sucessful no leaks.
<img src="http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk288/Roz3355/SUMP.jpg" width="600"></a>
Then filled with coral sand that came with the 2nd hand tank I bought.
I then added another 65kg of sand from Aggies to get the required depth of the dsb for both the main tank and the sand bed for the refugium.
<img src="http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk288/Roz3355/TANKWITHBASEROCK.jpg" width="600"></a>
Well next came filling with ocean water through Michael (tuskfish) and to start things going I put a tiny bit of food in each day as if there were a couple of fish in there, then finally the live rock arrived after forever it seemed so I rushed to the airport to pick up.
I brought it home and dipped each piece in ocean water to shake off anything that may have died and then placed into the tank.
I originally only wanted 2 sections of rock and the centre clear but couldn't fit it all in that way so have ended up with it the way it is now.
There is no areas that can not get flow through and also when I get more fish hopefully they will swim through the rocks.I guess only time will tell.
This next picture is one of my stars that came with the live rock.
<img src="http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk288/Roz3355/starfish3underneath.jpg" width="600"></a>
My next photo is of the sump completed.

Here is a couple of pictures of my tank with where it is at now, thank you for looking at my tank and I will update as time goes on and as I get more additions.

PS: I would have never been able to get this going had it not been for this site and in turn getting in contact with very kind and helping people who are into this absolutely wonderful addictive hobby.

Hi Roz,

Keep a very close eye on those stainless hose clamps. Usually the clamps themselves are stainless however the screw in thread is not and this causes rust, which is really bad for your system. I just used zip-ties on everything as those plastic hose clamps are useless IMO.

:roflmao: aren't they all made by sun sun? :roflmao: have no idea why would you say so.

Roz, i though you were setting up a nano? don't know why i have a feeling that you may follow Tone's patch, 5x2x2 is a nano right? :roflmao:

Tank looks great mate, however, i would like to suggest put the skimmer return in the feed pump section, so it can reduce the micro-bubble in the refrig. also add more sand in the middle chamber for the DSB (although you may have a lot sand in the display) so the macro algae can receive more light too..

Just out of curious, have you test how many water goes into your sump when you turn the pump off?

Well definitely long overdue for an update never enough hours in a day to get all done .I have added a chiller which has proven to be a very valuable asset. I now have 4 tunzes on a multi control unit and also got rid of the guppy all in one and up graded to 3x250 halide and 4x2ft t5 units.I also replaced my reef octopus skimmer with a Turbo made and to say the least very impressed and so much easier to do maintenance on It is external and is hooked up to a laguna pump .Well enough of the chit chat I will add some piccies .My zoo garden is going great guns I must say I have a weakness for a nice zoo I hope the picture uploaded okay???

Good to see everything has settled down now.
The chiller was a wise investment.
Tank is looking good and that powder blue looks like it has put some beef on.
