Pete and Sue's New Beginning [Winner TOTM Apr07]

Postby blags » Thu 29 Jun, 2006 12:00 am

Winner TOTM April 2007

Well with a change in both our lives we both felt like that we needed a new addition and lucky enough for me it was a new tank. The new tank was a combination of my 2 old tanks into 1 tank.
It all started back in March when Sue suggested that a new tank would make the move of the 2 tanks easier from one house to another, little did i know that she would pay for the new equipment needed. ;) How lucky was I.

Well now for the details:
The tank size is 6'6"x3'x2'6" with weir at one end and 2x 50mm bulkheads as returns. (Made at MaryAnnes aquariums Browns Plains)
Sump was my old 5'x18'x20' tank in a new sump design with a laguna 6000 return pump.
The skimmer is a Oceanwerx BS1-808 run by a Rio 32HF

Well now for some pictures and i will add more details and pics as i get time.

Here is the stand

Well ok here you go the rock is starting to go in.
All in all there was 80kg of cured base rock that went in and 100kg of cured live rock that went in that was cured in the old tanks before they went in here to increase my chances of not having a cycle.

It was a very long night but it all turned out very well. This all was accomplished on the night of April the 15th.

Lighting is 2 banks of double 6 foot power compacts for a total wattage of 768 watts (8 @ 96 watts) and 3 x 150W metal halide.
For a total wattage of just over 1200w

Unfortunately it is. I had a power cut to the house when i wasn't there in the middle of summer and buy the time i got back the next day the tank was up to 36 degrees and smelling rotton. :wall:
Lost everything apart from a few fish and about 2 corals all the rest gone. Trust me i was really peaved at it and was ready to give up. That clam was looking great and was getting bigger but just couldn't get it to recover it only lasted a couple of days. :furious:

Thats right 180kg of rock in there and still counting. :pirate:
Maybe another 20kg will go in to assist in coral placement and finishing of the rock work.

Bummer. At least it is still serving some purpose. Just think it is probably the most expensive piece of live rock in your tank now :pirate:

Cleaning is easy as it all ends up near the weir so a quick vaccum near there when i do my weekly water change and it is all done. There is bugger all algae in the tank as there was no cycle and my levels are great at the moment.

My test results are as follows

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0
Calcium 440
Dkh 8
Ph 8.3

So as you can see it is all fairly good conditions and i hope it will remain that way and i am still treating it as a new tank even though all the contents came from my previous tanks.

Will try and put some more pics up later tonight.
Cheers

Pete and Sue ... that is looking great! Still coming around to drink your redskin but have been travelling a bit. I'll have to do a tank crawl ... yours, Stevemg, Ben, Turbo ...

How's that skimmer going? It looks like it is meant for business!
