Thanks Brett :)

I finally took some photos of my fish! :)

Image

Image

I got a nice chalice from Vebas a while ago.

Image

I have a frag of that, if anybody is interested. There is a small one about the area of a 20 cent piece and a larger one about the area of a 50 cent piece.

I also have a large brain coral (Favites sp.) that I'm keen to cut up:

Image

I also have a frag of my mat Paly (here's the large colony)

Image

I got a whole bunch of new corals from Oceanarium today (thanks Pete!) so there will be some more new photos in a couple of days.

Yeah, I have to take some more. I've got a new frag tank, heaps of killer frags and anthias to take photos of.

I've been busy taking care of the Anthias and trying to get the fattened up, so I haven't taken any photos. Hopefully tomorrow or this weekend :D

Looking great Robert

How long until the anthias are out of QT?

Like the idea of having the macro under the frag fracks.

Cheers!

11th or the 15th of April. I've had them for just over two weeks.

Yeah, it grows pretty well under all that light! I'm a bit concerned about it taking over, but I'm going to wait and see.

I got some cool new macro from chrispc66 today as well (cheers!) :)

Hey mate,
your tank is looking great. you have some really nice pieces in there.
Frag tank looks good too,
Is the macro in the tank because you aren't running a sump?

Cheers Ollie and Cody!

The frag tank and the DT share a sump, the macro is there because there isn't heaps of room in my sump (full of pumps:main return, frag return, chiller and water change out). It gets plenty of light and has room to grow in the frag tank. The idea was to have a dual purpose frag tank plus fuge.

My long term plan for the frag tank is to have gyre flow with the pumps at the bottom so the surface is smooth. That would mean moving the macro to the middle space though; I'm not sure if that's the best idea because it will grow up around the coral. I guess I'll just have to trim it with scissors or something.

I've got a fuge flare LED and some mesh lying around if I feel like putting it in the sump. I'll probably do that if I run out of room for frags on the top level.

Re: Robert's Tank

Postby rmhowie » Sun 06 Apr, 2014 9:52 pm

Sad news guys, the Anthias in QT aren't going well. Got at least one aggressive one.

I only have four left and one of those is pretty beat up. (he's separated now).

One died very early in. I siphoned one when cleaning the tank :'( It was behind a pipe so I didn't see. I suspect he wasn't doing well before that, otherwise he should have been able to swim away. One jumped :( I had been meaning to lower the water level to around half to stop them jumping, but I didn't want to swap from the HOB to only the submersed filter too quickly. The water level is lower now. Found one today that obviously hadn't been eating and he checked out as well.

I'm pretty bummed about about what was supposed to be a nice addition to my tank. I would QT differently next time. Probably would only do one Anthia at once, or separate them with dividers. I would use fewer decorations, I have to move a lot of stuff around to clean the uneaten food ATM, and I think that causes more problems than not having any hidey holes.

With fewer fish in little isolation containers it would also be easy to check that all the fish are eating, not just some of them.

Put the Anthias in the DT today. Only one made it.

Not sure what my plan is from here. The options are just keep one, add more soon, add more after this one transitions to male.

If I add more I'm not sure whether to QT them in isolation dividers or just drip acclimate them to the DT straight away. I'm leaning towards no QT.

That sucks man.
I personally don't QT my fish, I run a UV steriliser tho,
And I haven't had any problems. I also buy healthy looking fish

Yeah they were healthy looking; I think it was just the aggression. I didn't even see it. I saw a little on day 3ish but that was it.

Cool :) Yeah that might be the best option. I'm not sure I have the energy to QT Anthias again after this...

If your getting them straight from Vebas QT facility you shouldn't have to QT them Rob. More just watching their feeding and making sure they are nice and fat.

Ok, might have to go down there today and give it another shot :) How many you reckon I should add Brett?

EDIT: The one that's in my tank seems to be having a good time. Swims out in the open a lot :)

I got more dispar Anthias today. I just drip acclimated them and put them in. They look pretty happy, they started eating as soon as I put food in! They are a lot less stressed than the last lot were in the QT tank, that's for sure!
