JDubs (old 6 foot mixed) and 2.5ft SPS dominated cube [TOTM]

Postby JDub » Thu 25 Nov, 2004 3:48 pm

Hi all,

Well I have changed ISP recently and as a result none of my old pics work anymore so I had to delete my old TJ thread.... What is the fun of a thread without pics right?

Here are the latest pics:

Tank is a 6x2x2, dominated by LPS and soft corals, but has a group of 4 or so Acro colonies in the middle of the tank.

Any comments good or bad appreciated

Enjoy:

nice hybrid pair there

Its kind of cool, I always liked both the black and the orange varieties so now I have the best of both worlds....
Both generously donated by mumafish, Thanks Ann!

i'm speechless...looking awesome. Nice to see another fat blenny sitting up begging!

Thanks! That blenny has been in the tank for well over 6 months and has NEVER accepted any type of prepared or live food, it soley lives on the diatom algae that grows on the sandbed and glass as far as I can see.

They are both ocellaris clowns, one is just a black and white variety. Ive seen them in Jem before.

Does the eel put any stress on your system as far as nitrates, eating other fish etc. I reckon theyre great but just heard bad stories.

and awesome tank Joel.

I was worried about it too when I first added him.

However, nitrates remain at zero, and he has never even looked twice at the fish (snowflakes generally eat crabs etc in the wild). In fact i have seen the flame angel 'slapping' him in the face with its tail and he just sits there looking stupid like nothings going on. I feed it twice a week.

He does occasionally decide to dig a hole under the rock work which can make a bit of a mess but apart from that he is fine.

I did notice a slight increase in diatom algae since he has been added but thats no major drama.

Cheers
Joel

Lovely tank, looks great. How does your flame go with SPS etc. Also have you had any problems with the snowflake deciding to take a trip out of the tank or down the weir?????

The flame has the occasional peck at the underside of one particular acro, however it has never done any damage to it and the acro in question is still growing and looks very happy.

I did alot of research before I got the eel and as a result knew about there carpet surfing ability and reported attempts to go 'intertidal'.

As a result, before I got the eel I fitted gutter guard to the hood, it encircles the perimetre of the tank inside the hood (including the wier) so there is no possible escape routes. :-D

I will try to get a pic in the next couple of days to show you what I mean.

Thanks for the kind comments BTW.

Joels tank does look much better in person. its even better when he shows you his sump and the big crab in there bites him :roflmao:

seriously though joels tank rocks. one think i can believe is how much corraline algae he has and that is only with dosing kalkwasser.

well done joel

hey Joel,

Great Tank, some more questions on your eel. How much did he set you back? and can you please post the pics of your gutter guard? I caught a nice snowflake on the sunshine coast unfortunately he decided to jump and we never foudn him/her again. What do you feed him twice a week? do you just pop a few live crabs in or what? This is what i used to do. Also do you have any problems with him and your snails. Im determined to get catch one again for my big tank.

Thanks
Sean

$85

and can you please post the pics of your gutter guard?

Sorry, totally forgot about that, I will take some snaps and will have them up tomorrow

What do you feed him twice a week? do you just pop a few live crabs in or what?

Just feed him a few large white bait or pieces of mussel twice weekly, I use a pair of aquarium tongs and he takes it straight out of them. I do not like the idea of ADDING crabs to an reef tank.

LOL... errr thanks. ;)

Yep, just coralline algae on the back wall.

Lol where's wally?

Thats actually how he got his name, when I first put him in I was always searching for him amongst the rockwork.....

He is never hard to find now ;)

I got it from Mauro about 10-12 months ago I think. It was a single frag about 8cm tall, no branches or anything. Has really taken off. I have a pic of it when I first got it, I can dig it out if you like.....

In the pic, each of those larger branches are about 10cm long.

Yep I have two Gonis, the green one was given to me around 18 months ago by a reefer that was breaking his tank down (sorry dont have a decent pic of the green one), the second one came as a hitchiker around the same time. It only had 4 polyps when it first arrived on the LR, still doing well :crossfingers:
