ITS ME OR THE TANK ! 8 x 2.6 X 2 new dreams insight !!

Postby Amphibian » Mon 29 Oct, 2012 11:23 pm

Introduction:

Well I’m like many reefers out there who have had to make hard decisions’ and sacrifices.

Mine all started 10 years ago when I met my better half Annette. (Need to say that!)
She moved into my 2 bedroom unit, soon after she came home with a gold fish in a bowl.I took a liking to it and didn’t mind.
Image

Well you know where this is heading? Right! . Wrong

I was an addict when Annette meet me.
Not that type of addict, I was a movie and music addict.
With a collection of over 6000 DVDs and 50.000 + cds my bedrooms were wall to wall DVDs and cds and my garage housed most of my cds .
Not long after Annette moved in we decided to move into a town house.

Need more room for my collection I was thinking.

Well wasn’t I wrong, most of my DVDs and cds remained in crates in our new home.
The demon within was craving for more DVDs and music, but was held at bay.

I needed a new hobby so purchased a new tank for the gold fish, which died soon after.
We grew attached to goldfish and we decided to go to our LFS and buy some tropical fish.

Well in short it grew into an obsession, in a matter of 6 months I had 9 tanks all over our 3 bedroom town house.
It was all too easy for me so decided to give marine a go. (After months of research of course)
my first marine set up was a 3x2x2 .
Image

15 months had gone past and we decided to buy a house.

All my tanks had to go, what task that was. I was able to keep the marine tank only.
My intention was to have a in wall tank one day, so that was my criteria on the house I was looking for (I didn’t let Annette know that).

After looking at about 60 houses we found the one.
It was old, rough, tired and in need of lots of TLC.
It has a in ground pool woohoo just what I wanted, but importantly had a great spot for the in wall tank.

After planning all the renos required with trepidation I asked Annette about placement of the in wall tank. Which was going to be in the kitchen.
Well at that point she said “you got to be kidding, it’s me or the tank!” .
I was shattered, I wanted to pick the tank (wrong answer) so the tank was canned. I still had my 3x2x2 in the garage while I finished the renos.

The pool needed to be restored at a cost of 8k Annette was shocked and I wanted to do it but there were other more important things to spend it on.
Annette suggested we fill in the pool and have more back yard.

She knew I loved to have a pool, but she didn’t know I didn’t want to spend the money on it.
I had a sad look on my face when she told me (haha) . she said if we fill in the pool we can put the tank in the wall .

This was a blessing in disguise.
The very next day I arranged to have 125 tonnes of dirt del that week to fill in the pool. What a job that was .

Lol nice one, looking forward to seeing it evolve. Hmm, couldn't you dig around the edges of the pool and put in viewing windows making it a huge marine tank? :-)

Great background story! :)

I don't tend to read long posts, but I read every word of that one..
Towards the end I was wondering "oh no! she left him!"

I'm happy for your outcome! Can't wait to see photos of your build!

Sounds like a fantastic set up - like everyone else I am looking forward to the pictures. I up load my pictures to the gallery in this website, open up the picture and then copy the link, then in the post press the Img button and paste the link address between the Img Img that appear in the post after pressing the Img button. I have not explained that too well but I hope it helps. All the best Scott

Pic of the frame work built into the existing stud wall which will open up into the garage which I will convert into a service area and will house all the equipment.

A planed frag and quarantine tank will be added along the way as well.

I will be sanding the frame and painting with a waterproof paint that's non toxic and low odour .

The floor joists and piers need to be upgraded to handle approx 1500 kg spread over 3 meters .

Point load is on each pier in center is obviously greater so my main concerns will be there.
Image

While I was under the house I also found some antique coke bottles , I might be able to sell them to fund some new fancy bits like Aquatronica controller , I can only wish!!!!

I cut out the wall lining to expose the stud wall . I will be cutting out a hole to allow access to the top of the tank .
I need to install a beam above the wall as its load bearing .
More fun and games , it should be worth it.

This is the left hand side of the tank and again I have removed the stud wall to allow access to the sumps and equipment , again a load bearing wall and need to instal a timber beam to support the roof frame work.

I'm glade I'm doing it all myself ,the cost would have been over budget.

Well that's what I tell Annette.

Project is progressing well .

Top bulk head has been built and ready for the sound proofing batts
I'm anticipating a bit of resonance so one of the main objectives is to make this setup completely quite from the
Kitchen where it will be viewed.

I have installed all of the sound deadening batts , one of the easiest jobs so far.
I will be lining the stud walls with 16 mm mdf for added sound proofing.
I was going to use 13 mm plaster board but decided I need a strong wall to mount cable trays and Weatherproof power points.

Love the background story mate. I built my own house and said to the wife I wanted a tank kim the wall. She said not a chance!
Then she said to me that she wanted a timber bifold door amd in said, not a chance!
I always intended on giving her the door but got to use it to get my tank. Although now she calls it our tank.

Looking forward to seeing the end result. I regret not doing acoustic batts in my framing.

Apart from being a great forum and a wealth of information , full of tips , achievements , disaster story's , do's and dont's

i particularly love the the excuses we give our partners about new equipment and live stock that just suddenly appear .
i would love to start a new topic on the best excuses given , i could really use some right now !!!
please send them thru asap
