Getting interest for a Post Processing Challenge

Postby tmd77 » Thu 07 Apr, 2011 1:55 pm

So i'm trying to see what kind of interest there is for a post processing challenge.

Basically what i was thinking of doing is supplying a SOOC image in both a RAW format, and a Hi-Res jpg format (for those who don't have RAW readable editing programs), for everyone to put their interpretation on.

The idea would be that on say a Monday night, the file would be available for all to download, then a timeframe would be given for everyone to edit and submit their interpretation.

The Submission could be a tad bit different to the current weekly themed challenge (maybe), because personally i'd like to see the submission to look like the following;

ORIGINAL PHOTO

EDITED PHOTO

EVERY STEP TAKEN TO ACHIEVE THE FINAL RESULT

The reason behind this is so that you can see both the original photo and edited photo so close together. However, that said, if people prefer the gallery option, then we can also do that.
I believe that going into this detailed response will help everyone. Those who are beginning it will help them understand how to apply PP, and those who've been applying PP, it will help them to understand the different techniques.
In turn, making it a fantastic learning opportunity for everyone involved.

If you're interested in joining in, just list your name below. Also if you have any suggestions about the challenge, then feel free to post them up here as well.

I'm thinking the 18th of April will be the start date for this. It will allow for a week's rest after this week's challenge.

Because the RAW file is going to be 15mb, and the Hi-Res jpg is going to be about 6-8mb, does anyone have a suggestion on how/where they can be uploaded so that everyone can download?

good to see a lot of interest for this!

We can simply put it up on the RTAW site somewhere.

I am working on the Photography page in the RTAW Reefpedia currently, fleshing it out and providing some links that will help people out with doing this. If anyone has things to add to it, then please do so.

no one has any more suggestions on this?

This will begin next monday, 18th April, at 7pm AEST, and conclude next Sunday, 24th April, at 7pm AEST.

Remember that PP is how you interpret the shot, hence i don't think a rating system should be applied, however discussion about why someone did something is definitely encouraged.
Also remember to keep a record of exactly what PP was applied, so this can be explained to everyone.

Doc, if you read this, can you please send me a PM with instructions on how i can load the files onto the website for people to access?

Remember you don't have to have Photoshop/Lightroom/Aperture/etc. to be able to participate in this. GIMP is free to download (i think) and can do a fair bit of basic PP.

Actually, GIMP can pretty much do all the post processing the Photoshop can. There is also a number of automated scripts available to make things easier. I have added a couple of links at Photography Tutorials to where you can find out how to do things.

Sorry, we don't have the ability to let you upload the files without giving you access to everything  If you upload it somewhere, I can then get it onto the MASA server so that it is there for all prosperity. I lean towards having it on our server rather than somewhere else so we have control over it and it wont suddenly disappear at some later time. Same deal with the entries too.

Not sure that you need the original photo with every entry, since it is going to be the same photo for each one.

hmmm the biggest issue is getting the RAW file to someone to get it added to the server as it is 15mb and i cant email that.

only reason i suggested the original photo with every entry is so that you can have an immediate comparison, but i'm happy either way, will let everyone decide what they want to do with it.

maybe we might just have to have the hi-res jpg to work with...

actually scrap that i've just found a way that i can upload it, then you can transfer it onto the MASA server doc. will send through the links.

are we able to increase the size of the file able to be uploaded to the gallery doc? i find it very difficult to keep my ideal quality with the photo at a good size under 250kbs. doesnt need to be much more, maybe top out at 400kbs? obviously i understand that this takes up more space on the server, but would be appreciated.

Re file size, don't see an issue with that. Will have to run it by some people to check, but going by the number of files and total volume uploaded to the gallery so far, not a real issue. We just started with that level as seemed reasonable and that sized file can pretty much show all you need to show for the vast majority of things.

What genre does everyone wish to start with?

Landscape
Animals
Real estate
Macro
Etc?

Don't mind really. Landscape probably provides more flexibility.

Have set up the gallery for this gallery/album.php?album_id=341 that we can upload the images into. Image size allowed has been doubled.

Ok guys Trent has asked me to take the reigns and post up the image for this challenge as I am able to host images online.

The links below are for the .JPG and RAW files. I would highly recommend using the RAW file for maximum results with this image. If you are a little uneasy with RAW then I am sure there is plenty of members here (me included) who are more than happy to help so don't hesitate to post questions here.

Photo was taken whilst Camping on Moreton Island, Brisbane last Easter.

RAW File
http://www.dyimages.com.au/images/masa/RAW.NEF

may need to download the photoshop plugin for Nikon RAW files which can be found here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3822

JPEG File
http://www.dyimages.com.au/images/masa/JPG.JPG

If you have any issues downloading any of the files then PM me and I'll try and email them through.

Happy Editing

Just wanted to confirm that the gallery does indeed allow a maximum of 1024 pixels in either direction?

Also does the gallery appeared to manipulate the image as I uploaded it, changing the colour balance slightly and adding a lot more compression...

That aside, here is my entry:

I will post the steps at the back end of the week :)

Nice stuff so far, nice to see fairly different entries too :)

Edit: I interpreted this picture as being of a sunrise rather then a sunset, hence my different take on the colors. Basically all I have done is adjust the Raw file particually the temp, then I have a duplicate layer set to hard light with the opacity tuned down a bit. I resized and sharpened the image slightly however it looks a bit off after the upload.

Edit: #2 up not perfect but just trying to demonstrate the difference editing can make

Just out of interest is anyone else here using an IPS lcd panel or traditional CRT monitor (something more suited to image processing)?
