Pete's Aquarium - Construction started (stand)

Postby petes-aquarium » Mon 28 Jun, 2010 10:32 pm

Introduction:
Hi All long time reader on the forums and decided to join just the other day. I have been keeping freshwater fish for over 10 years now and have decided to take the plunge and go Marine. The plan is to start very slowly with a FOWLR system and eventually move into corals. The reason being is that I ain't a millionaire unfortunately.... :)

The forums have inspired me into taking the plunge into marine, the tank I am going to be getting is a 6FT x 30" x 30" I might only go 24" high to possibly save on lighting needs.

System Objectives: Start slowly and to keep fish and eventually corals in optimal health.

System Type: FOWLR to begin with and slowly create mixed reef.

Display System:

Strike up Date: Not for a little while yet, just started building the stand.

Display Tank: 6FT x 30" x 30" (possibly only 24" high haven't decided yet) weir on side closest the wall.

Display Lighting: More than likely 3x 250watt metal halides with 14K bulbs, 2x twin tube T5's and some sort of moonlight. Still to decide.

Stand: Custom built bar conversion. Currently consisting of 100mmx100mm hardwood beams and 90mmx42mm supports.

Hood: Custom built, haven’t decided on look 100%.

Sump: space I have for a sump is approximately 970mm x 480mm wide plenty of height available. Will talk to Dennison at Marie Anne’s in regards to design.

Refugium: From my reading it is recommended to have a Refugium built into the sump, so will look into this.

Refugium Lighting: Some type of T5 I guess.

Support systems:

System Water: I will try and use Natural salt water as much as possible but I think for water changes I may lean towards a high quality salt mix with RO water.

Display Water circulation: Not decided Yet. But will make sure I get enough water circulation to keep the water movement natural and healthy.

Return Pump: Been thinking about an Eheim Compact 5000 for main return.

Skimmer: I think I have decided on the Octopus Hurricane 2500 2X

Evaporation Top Up: Plan on setting up auto top-up controlled through RO unit with float valve.

Chemical Support:

Calcium Addition: Manual dose to begin with

Alkilinity Addition: Manual dose to begin with

Other Chemical Maintenance: Manual dose to begin with

Current Water Chemistry: If applicable
Nitrates:will add when ready
Phosphates:will add when ready
Alkalinity:will add when ready
Calcium:will add when ready
Salinity / Specific Gravity:will add when ready
Magnesuim:will add when ready

Current Malawi African setup I have, this tank has been up and running for just over 3 years now. It is a 4ft x 24" x 28" high tank and is filtered by a Fluval FX5 (main filtration) and another aquapro filter (used for PH control)

Here are 2 pics of the stand so far, definitely is overkill but better to be safe than sorry.

This is hopefully what it will end up looking like... :)

Thanks for looking, and will try and update as I make progress on my project. I will be working on this project slowly but will get there eventually.

Been playing with a design and sizing tonight, I came up with this what do you guys/gals think. I have included 2x 32mm sump feeds one being backup and also 2x returns (1 for sump and 1 for chiller). Also I think I am going to get the 2 viewing sides in Starphire glass.

Hi All,

A little bit of progress on the stand, today I attached the top and gave it one coat of stain and varnish. Seems to be coming along nicely.

Pic of first coat of Stain/Varnish, will sand it back and give it another coat possibly tomorrow.
Image

Also been doing a bit of design and playing around with the possible finishing look. What do you guys/gals think...? I have been thinking to put a quarantine tank on the corner, it will be a 2ft cube possibly. Do you think this would be big enough for a quarantine tank...?

Thanks for looking.

All this marine stuff is giving me a headache... :roflmao:

Trying to figure out what to get for a wave maker set. Been looking at the Vortech MP40EWS (would need 2/3 as a min for the tank), the Tunze Turbelle stream Kit TS48 (damn expensive but looks good) and the Hydor Koralia 6 power heads with the KORALIA WAVEMAKER 4 (Most reasonably priced) any recommendations on this I am leaning towards the Hydor, as I have used their products in fresh water aquariums with no problems. I know after reading that the Vortech is the way to go but are the Hydor's that much worse...?

Also done the second coat of clear on the stand yesterday, starting to look good. I might do another coat with a satin based varnish (not untill I have done the clading), not sure if I like the gloss look so much.

Thanks for looking, any comments are appreciated.

I like it a lot! Can't wait to see what you come up with. Is that an old bar? Damn... lucky it is a marine setup you're putting there or I'd say it is a waste!

Yeah it is a bar, hacked it up a bit now. The sink is going to come in handy for water top up's, hopefully it has enough pressure for a RO unit (should do).

Peter.

G'Day, sorry don't have one and haven't looked for one as yet. It just was a skimmer that looked good spec wise from my internet travels. Looks like I might search for another one when tank is sorted out.

It can be a pain in the backside finding parts, there doesn't seem to be a huge range readily available in Aus.

G'Day all,

I have designed my LED lighting system, It consists of 3x 2FT length's consisting of 24 LED's each (haven't decided on Blue/White LED ratio as of yet)

Lighting will consist of the following

36X CREE XP-G R5 Cool White 3W LED on Star (RATIO Might change)
36X CREE XR-E Royal Blue 3W LED on Star (RATIO Might change)
72X 40/60 Degree Optics (might not use, might make up some type of reflector instead)
6X Mean Well ELN-60-48P dimmable driver for string of 12 LED's Running LED's at 750mA.
1X Arduino Duemilanove for PWM dimming.
1X Real Time Clock for Arduino Duemilanove for Sunrise/Sunset capability and Moonlight turn on.
3X Semikron P35 or P16 heat sinks 600mm long x 200/215mm wide.
Heaps of Connect-IT bits from Bunning’s.

This is going to be in line with 2x 3 tube T5 HO with 1x Actinic and 2x White in each, hopefully this will be enough lighting.

Here are some pics.

A small update.

My heat sinks have arrived. Damn these are heavy, now I need to work out a way to mount them from the ceiling. I hope there are some studs above the tank.

Currently working on a PWM diming circuit for my Arduino controller, need to get some parts from Jaycar. Based on this drawing found on my net searches.

First 2ft length of LED lighting is working, will redo wiring through the week and neaten it up also. So far so good.

Rome wasn't built in a day... lol.

This could be a picture of what I am thinking, and I may or may not have the skimmer on order and a few other bits.
