First MAXSPECT RAZOR stolen

Postby MC Reefer » Fri 06 Jul, 2012 4:01 pm

Hey Guys,

I Stole the first Maxspect Razor into the country today from an unsuspecting retailer. :pirate:

Glad I didnt grab the dirty freshie 8000k version :roflmao:

My first impression of it was WOW! :-x

Its the 160w 16,000k version.

I have placed it on my 100cm aqua one FOWLR setup. It was running T8 but thats now out the window.

Will give a better review tonight but first impressions are this is an exceptional unit that will be great value for money.

What fish? They haven't come out since I installed it. :roflmao:
They may think the Apocalypse is comming after living with the T8's for so long.

Those fans - are they pulling air from bottom up or top down?

The unit looks very impressive :)

I'm hoping top down and I suspect this to be the case.

I've had the unit running with both A channel (white lights) and B channel (blue) running at 100% for a good few hours now and they havent been required to kick in yet. The unit has massive heatsink around it. To touch it still feels cool so I dont see them coming on anytime soon.

Yep it is a very cool compact looking unit.

So here goes my observations/review so far and its only early days yet.

Pros

1. To my eye, which I will note isn’t that good. I would rate the output at around 20k with both channels operating at 100%. Obviously less if you
opt to dim. But I love the bluer look.
2. LEDs give an awesome shimmer on the rock and substrate equivalent to my 400w Metal halide.
3. The spread of light well and truly covers my 100x40x60cm display. The unit sits 300mm from the surface and has excellent penetration to
the substrate. It’s going to be far too much light for my tank.
4. Power supplies are Mean Well branded and of sturdy construction.
5. The overall finish of the fitting is OUTSTANDING with a machined alloy look.
6. The cabling connection appears to be waterproof.
7. Programming is done by a knob next to the display and is extremely easy to programme. I love the idea of having the capability to control
both on/off and dimmer control all within the unit itself. No external controller or cabling. I took off so fast with the unit I forgot to look for
the instructions but it’s so easy you don’t need them. Plus it has two presets for the lazy like me. :sleeper:
8. It’s an extremely slimline fitting which is a mere 20mm at its thickest section.
9. Most importantly I feel it’s awesome value for money considering the cost of similar units with these functions and LED’s.
10. The choice of LED's gives a good spectrum.

Cons

1. The light is very light weight and although the legs are sturdy and I doubt I could knock it off, I would like to see a clamp based system like
the Mazarra P series which attaches to the tank. But having said that they would have to be bulkier to compensate for the clamps etc. It is
very slim, neat and tidy as it is now.
2. You can’t get your hands on one till later in the month when they are released I hear. So your just going to have to look at my pic’s for
now (which are also not the greatest and doesn’t do it the world of justice).

Any questions???????????

A very BIG    for me. Quality unit at a good price. :-x

Looks good mate.
But question... What's the point of those huge wide fins? Is that the heatsink? Would look even sexier if it was just the centre bit with the leds!

Yeah I assume its heatsink to keep the unit cool. Fans barely run at all. Have started only once in 6-7 odd hours now.

It looks a great unit, hope it looks as good on my tank.

I think some lfs are doing deals at the moment for pre-orders.
See here for dealers

I assume some prices will vary due to freight and the likes.

A great light though

The leds are primarly white and blue spectrum as follows dependant on fitting chosen-

Cree X lamps-
cool white - 8000k
warm white - 3000k
blue - 465-485nm
royal blue 450-465

Ep leds dual core-
super actinic - 410-420nm

To people like myself that dont really understand the above fully, it equates to purple, aqua, blue, white and yellowish coloured leds.

I'll post a picture later it may help better.

Again not great photos which dont fully represent the true colours.
Shots are of one cluster only

A channel- Blue, yellowish and white
Image

B channel - purple, blue and aqua (running diagonal from rear left to front right) not a great shot but hard to get with my crappy $100 camera.

Fans cut in once last night but not for very long. I confirmed they pull air from the top of the unit through the light fitting and down towards the water surface.
