Opportunity to participate in marine aquarium PhD research.

Postby Kevin.Erickson » Fri 07 Jun, 2013 2:14 pm

Updated: 09/11/2016

I have subbmitted my PhD! Tanks to everyone! Let me know if you are interested in having me come speak to your club about my findings.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and for assisting with my research.

I am Kevin Erickson, a marine aquarium hobbyist, and also a marine aquarium researcher at CQUniversity who is interested in the marine fish and their potential ailments that are imported in to Australia for the marine aquarium trade.

As the major part of the marine aquarium value chain, we as hobbyists, marine aquarium stores, wholesalers, and importers often go ignored in studies and policy-making decisions with regards to the marine aquarium trade.

Having realized this previous oversight, I would like to provide you all with the opportunity to assist in my research.

I have been developing my current research project over the past year and have had the opportunity to meet many Australian marine aquarium hobbyists. The federal government has provided me with the funds to conduct this research and I am now ready for your help.

It is the goal of this study to collect data on how marine ornamental organisms (MOs) and their potential pathogens move through the value chain. The purpose of this study is to assess the pathways that imported marine aquarium trade species enter the post-border biosecurity system in Australia; develop a risk analysis methodology to assess the problems caused by the post-border spread of marine aquarium trade species, parasites and diseases; and assess the health of marine ornamental fish, invertebrates, seagrasses and algae species in the post-border pathway (value chain) within Australia.

This research combines both a social research and animal research aspect. As such, there are three opportunities for you to partake in the research.

Ways in which you can partake in the research project:

1: Complete the marine hobbyist or marine industry survey.
Feel free to use the Internet to assist you in looking up names or terms.
This survey is available to all marine aquarium hobbyists, store owners, livestock wholesalers and importers.
The survey will take between 20 - 45 minutes.
The survey is completely anonymous and cannot be linked back to you.
Please take the survey just once per household / business.
The survey is now closed, Thanks everyone!

2: Notify me when you have a sick marine ornamental organisms.
Send me an email (K.Erickson2@cqu.edu.au) with the subject line “Marine Aquarium Disease Report”.
Let me know as much information about the organism as possible.
What sickness / disease do you think it is? What are the symptoms?
Where do you believe the sickness came from?
How long have you had the sickness / disease in your system?
Have you added anything new to your tank recently?
If you can, please provide photos of the sick organisms.
The research is now closed, Thanks everyone!

3: Donate your living sick / diseased fish.
This is an option for advanced hobbyists, stores, wholesalers and importers who, rather than culling their sick / diseased stock, can send them to me, and I can house them here in my specially designed laboratory for observation and sampling of their ailments.
Please note that your organisms will not be returned.
Please send me an email (K.Erickson2@cqu.edu.au) for additional information if you are interested in this option.
The research is now closed, Thanks everyone!

Thank you to the MASA committee / community and MASX clubs for their support in this research and allowing me to make this a “sticky” topic in the general forum.

I will be updating this post in the future to add more information.

Please leave any questions or comments below.

Thank you for your support with this research.

Really hope everyone can spare the few minutes it takes to complete, it's research like this that can have a major impact on the future of our hobby and the legislation governing it.
Governments rely heavily on research like this, if we want to be included in making sure the best decisions are made we need to participate and have our voice heard, don't let the opportunity pass by.

Yes, I can put one together.
I will also start listing the LFS who have given me the okay to tell everyone publicly that they are helping me.
