DSB and water circulation

Postby wrenfeathers » Sun 16 Sep, 2018 9:42 pm

Hey all

I'm soon to start up my second tank after being absent for many years.
I'm very seriously considering an in-tank deep sand bed with fine sand particles.

My question, to those that have used them, is: Do the fine particles get disturbed much from the water circulation?

I know that plenty of water movement is desirable, and even more so with a deep sand bed to ensure there is a minimum of detritus build up. However, if some portion of that force is hitting the surface of the substrate, how do the fine particles fair? I'm talking particles in the vicinity of 0.125 - 0.5mm.

Thanks.
Pete

HI; I don't & would never use a deep sand bed, but those that do are always complaining about fine sand being blown all over the place by circulation pumps.
Some people who use some sand for asthetics go for a larger grain to combat this problem.

I prefer the shallow sand look so I've never tried. Larger particles would be the way to avoid this if you wanted corals that require high flow, but if you like the look a fine particles then low flow (with appropriate stock) and weekly re-spreading would be the key - we can't have it all.
Hopefully someone with a deep sand bed can weigh in on this???

i have one in mine, system is about 6 years old and everything still going well.

DSB are based on fine sand, not larger particals. Circ pump placement is important, cant be pointed down, needs to point upwards
