Beautiful tank. Has some great looking colonies in there.

Would deffinintly be a shame to have to remove that pump one day.

No major problems. I am starting to find things a bit challenging for space with all of the increasingly large Acro colonies. Very difficult to clean the glass in some places. I'm continually getting coral stings on my hands and forearms when working in the tank. (Have been a little surprised at just how agressively Acropora can sting you).

Water movement is also becoming more of a challenge. Have a few dead spots that gather sediment and grow a bright green algae. It syphons out very easily, but is not always easy to reach.

There is a large brown stag Acro at the back that really needs to come out. It has a trunk as thick as my wrist, and is as ugly as sin. Just really not sure how I'm going to get it out, as it is impossible to snap. Am thinking I may need to half drain the tank and then try and get into it with power tools.

Pump still stuck

JimmyA wrote:Am still in love with that monti growing around the powerhead wire

That thing is a beast. Fragging time may be approaching. It is starting to grow up and over the Duncanopsammia like an umbrella. I love the way it is plating out at the back.

Siiri wrote:Looking great Colin and love the shot of the Clown

Thanks Siiri. She is a big girl. Lays a massive patch of eggs every 2 weeks, like clockwork.

StripestheEel wrote:Looking good Colin. When you upgrading

As much as I would love to, I just can't justify the expense of an upgrade. Oh, to be young and have a disposable income again.
I'm actually pretty content to maintain and enjoy the tank as it is. It doesn't change substantially to the outside observer, but there is always something new going on in there that catches me by surprise.

It's easy to see why you've started to get flow issues... :nut: looking good Colin, it's nice to see that even after all this time it can go on the up and up.

Thanks for noticing :sneaky:

That chalice started bleaching off at the back end a month or so back. I had let the calcium and alkalinity drift a little, and I don't know whether that had anything to do with it. But damage was towards the rear where it is definitely being shaded from growth above.

I have done a few water changes and pull water parameters back into shape, and now the chalice is regaining colour all over and looks like it is bouncing back.

Any chance of a top down shot? Really interested to see how your tank looks.

I was loathe to comment on your chalice given how good everything else looked, but as I said I couldn't tell.

Nice work Colin! I love that strange Seriatopora and your plating Montipora. Are you planning on letting the green Montipora encrust all of the glass on that side?

Re: Basenji's 4 foot display [TOTM 06/2010] - Kieren hits 15

Postby Basenji » Thu 02 Aug, 2012 2:01 pm

I passed a bit of a milestone today. According to my log book, my yellow tang was first added to the tank on 2nd August 1997, so we've just ticked over the 15 year mark.

It's kind of fitting that it happened in the middle of the Olympics, since his name is Kieren, after the famous superfish associated with gold back at the 1996 Games.

He's been in this tank the whole time, has traversed 3 house moves and a fairly major tank crash. Still in good health, although the last 6 months has seen him suffer a bit of damage to his dorsal fin, which I'm associating with the tank becoming increasingly grown out with Acropora.
He cost me $70 in 1997, which at the time I considered a huge amount to spend on a fish, but in the long term that has turned out to be a fair investment.

I can't claim to have done anything special to hit 15 years with this one fish. I've certainly had many other fish come and go over that period. There's an element of dumb luck in it, but also says a lot for picking quality livestock in the first place, and then providing consistent regular care over a long period.
I understand that they can live for as long as 25-30 years, so we may only be half way yet.

Here's a couple of pics of the birthday boy, taken yesterday.

That's a milestone that you should be really proud of Colin. i had just started high school the that year and looking back that was a bloody long time ago! I have been chuffed that my purple tang is about to hit three but you've really just put that into perspective for me now :roflmao:

Well done, that feat deserves a lot of respect.
