Nano to 4x2x1.5 upgrade

Postby 555combo » Wed 16 Dec, 2015 3:51 pm

Eventually got the order in for the tank.

Best part is that the Mrs decided that we needed to re arrange the lounge space and so I could get a 4 foot tank instead.

Tank will be 48x24x18 or 1220x600x450
Sump is a 42x15x18 or 1050x380x450

I'll be building the stand form Structural pine. Ply and Foam under the tanks.

Cladding will be sealed and painted MDF to attempt a clean minimalist look.

Tank should be done by the end of the week.

Stand will be built over the next 2 weeks or so. Everything is ready to go. IBC got filled this morning, feet getting itchy.....
Cheers,
Aaron.

Tank ready for pickup tomorrow.

Stand is almost complete. Just one more Top Coat to go.

Got all the timber, MDF and ply cut to size at the local Bunnings. To their credit they were almost MM perfect.

Structural pine:

I put 2 coats of primer/sealer on the timber before assembly.

Base Piece:

Uprights in place and Top about to go on:

Assembed stand and MDF and Ply being primed. They all got 2 coats as well before being screwed on.

Fully assembled in primer:

Doors open:

Got a few days left before going back to work, so hope to have the tank plumbed and fresh water testing next week so I can run it for a few days, then next weekend the big swapover happens.
Cheers,
Aaron.

The Sump is mostly setup. Just need to complete the reactor plumbing.

Starting to look like a real aquarium:

Will be getting fresh water filled tonight and run for a few days to test.

Trying to get as much done as possible so that I can move stock by Saturday at the latest.

The tank is wet.

After sorting out a few minor plumbing leaks in the fresh water test, the dry rock and sand (calgrit) went in last night.

One bag of calgrit had a bit more dark colouring to it but I only noticed after mixing it with the light one - but I like how it looks.

The plan is to now make sure everything is working as planned and move the liverock, coral and fish over tonight or on the weekend.

Basic FTS:
Image

The island on the left is Caribsea Life Rock. The rock on the right is just base rock and is where the live rock from the nano will end up.

Sump setup.
Image

The skimmer is putting out a ton of microbubbles - I did use some fresh Aqua Knead-it and the skimmer is at the max depth. So will see what happens when I raise it up a bit more and wait for it to break in.

The plumbing.
Image

I tried to keep it as simple as possible. There is a Union at the top of everything and given nothing is too long the whole pieces just come out.
Cheers,
Aaron.

Finished the livesock move last night.

Before:
Image

After:
Image
The SPS island is 'finished'. After a lot of CG glue it is all in place.
Image

I feel I need some more rock for the softies island. Going to look at options today and then clean up everything from the sand bed.
Image

The poor clowns don't know what to do now there is a ~600% volume increase.

Will be keeping a close eye on it today and hoping nothing goes bad. :crossfingers:
Cheers,
Aaron.

Got some additional cured live rock from another MASQ member that is shutting down and finished off the softies side.

Thanks Smidy. Now just need to learn patience again and not add too much new stock too quickly. Having been limited in stock for a few years it will be good to get some new fish.

Aaron.

Short Update.

Everything going well. Nothing died after the move and the expected algal bloom has been and gone.

Added a couple of peppermint shrimp to help with the cleanup.

Added the first of a few new fish. Managed to find a small Fox Face. The Fox Face was my favourite fish of my old tank (about 13 years ago!)

Made the mistake of letting our 4 year old name the fish. Indroducing 'Snugglebutt'
Image

He hid for about 3-4 days then ventured out, then smashed all the algae in the tank. Is taking pellets and frozen food fine. Still working on getting him to take nori.

Now trying to work out if I am using too many bio pellets. Testing shows 0 nitrates (Salifert) and 0.00 PO4(Hanah). Using 200ml of pellets in 350l water, so well below the recommended rate, but given the really low stocking rate I suppose not unexpected.

Going to leave everything it as is, given that I am adding a fish every few weeks and at the moment the low nutrients don't seem to be having a detriment on anything. The SPS has colour, is growing and everything looks good.
Cheers,
Aaron.

A quick update and a few pics.

Got sick of the TLF 150 not moving pellets so upgraded to a marine sources unit. Works loads better and actually tumbles the pellets.
Image

A few new additions over the last couple of months. A small blue tang, called Dory of course. And a small group of Barrier Reef Chromis. The Chromis are great and add a lot of movement to the tank.
Image

Other than that the setup has been solid. Had an issue with cyano but that has been and gone and the tank even survived with me being away for a week with minimal assistance from family.

A few pics.

Thought it time to do an update.

So A LOT of ups and downs in the last 5 months, mostly downs with a few ups. The downs were mostly (ok all) caused my silly decisions/actions/inexperiences on my part.

Silly decision 1: When I started this tank I went straight in with bio pellets and I'm now sure I ran a the water too clean for too long (nitrate and phos both 0) before acting, and lost 90% of the SPS/LPS. After turning off the pellets and just running the tank with some cheato in the sump my nutrients are now usually around 5ppm for nitrate and 0.07-0.1 for phosphate.

Silly decision 2: Not completely convinced that the loss above was all down to no nutrients, I got a new light. Not in itself a bad thing, its an 800mm long, 330w chinese black box with WiFi control and looks and works great. What I didn't do properly is acclimate corals and clam to it properly. Most things that survived the ULNS didn't take nicely to the new super high power lights. Things didn't look healthy, I bought a seneye and my settings tested at over 1000 par where the pocci melted, and almost 800 on the sand bed where the clam died. Needless to say the LED's were turned WAAAAAAAY down after that.

Whilst I cant be sure that the light was to blame there is nothing else that I can logically put a finger on that may have caused it - anything outside the most intense part of the light seems fine, water params didn't change, and it wasn't just the one type of coral that RTN'ed.

BUT!

There have been ups too.

Since sorting the nutrients and the light, the hammers, softies, most of the zoas and nems all see to have come through fine.
The fish have all thrived (other than the few chromis that just went missing), I have slowly added to their numbers and they all look happy and healthy.
No major hardware issues or failures.

Most importantly, I'm hoping I am out the other side but still love the hobby and tank.

In the last month, after sorting out the excessive lighting, ensuring stable water parameters, I finally decided it was time for a new clam. :crossfingers:

A few blury fish pics:
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

And a few other pics.
Upgraded the return line to 32mm from 20 and got heaps better flow.
Image
Added a manifold to run reactors off the return rather than separate pumps.
Image

And just realised that I don't have a FTS that I will have to add soon. :konk:
Cheers,
Aaron.

Thanks. I'm happy with it again.

The RW-8's are still going solid. They give a good wide flow, no complaints.

The marine sources gear is all going great. The skimmer pulls out a heap of gunk.

Sorry to be a bother but curious about the claimed flow from the rw series seems pretty full on for the size. Do you think they get the 16000LPH at full noise?

Not sure on what their actual thru put would be. They claim 8000lph each, but I have never run them past 70%. At that point the substrate was blowing everywhere and the flow seemed to be too much. They certainly push some water though.
Cheers,
Aaron.
