Cade HL-900....Back into reefing after 20 years off

Postby clubbi4 » Sun 24 May, 2015 9:19 pm

Introduction:
Hi All, I've been itchin for a while now to get back into reefing. I found it rewarding when I did it back in 1995. I was going to go for a Red Sea Reefer 250 but with no idea from any LFS of stock availability and some saying July, I chose to go for the Cade.
The pro's with the Cade are 600mm front to back rather than 500mm.
Opticlear glass.
Full alloy and glass stand, no wood or plastic.
Sump is much bigger (75lt)

So, I made a few mods to the cabinet. I wanted to make room for a ro top up container and the way they have designed it, there is no room for it. The floor is about 19mm lower than the bracing that goes around the base of the cabinet. So I couldn't push the sump far enough to 1 side to make room for a 10ltr container. What I did was made the floor the same height as the bracing in the cabinet so I could then push the sump hard yp against the right hand side of the cabinet which gave me 150mm space for a bottle.
you can see what I mean

Then I installed a ply wood side infront of the glass so I had some where to screw stuff onto the side

This is the result

I then painted the back and right side with black uv resistant paint

I made my own frame for my 2 Hydra 26's. I bought some 25mm black square aluminium tubing and 4 corners and cut it to the perfect size. Mounted it to the cade hockey sticks and bob's your uncle, a frame that cost under $20. The classic mounting rails from Hydra were over $100.

Friday I picked up 40kg Live rock

This was the first scape....

This is how I left it..

Nice build mate.coming along nicely.
One question, how do u find the hydra 26's.
Do u notice any noticeable colour patches on the sandbed? Im still tossing up between the kessils 360we and the hydra 26's.
Cheers

Really happy with the Hydra's. I don't notice any colours on the sand bed when all colours are on but obviously you notice it when you have only 1 or 2 colours on. I was tossing up between these and the radions and I'm glad I chose these. Love em....

Ok, So a quick update. I bought an anemone for my 2 clown fish. After 3 weeks of perfect harmony the anemone came off where he was and I found him sucked up by the Gyre. The water was very milky and I thought I was going to lose all my fish apart from the clowns. Luckily all is ok after a 20% water change.

It's hard to believe the tank is only 8 weeks old as I didn't really have much of a cycle. The rock I bought was already cured and nothing died off. My nitrates are 4 ppm and phos is 0.03. I'm just not sure if the lights need to be on at 100% or is lower ok??
I purchased 2 corals from a LFS that was moving location and got them at 50% off. It was a small Goni and a small elegance. 2 weeks later and they still have not come out at all. When I purchased them they were also not out but I just thought it was cause the lights were not on full power yet. I'm a bit concerned that they are dying off.
Have to wait and see...

Love the tank, looking fantastic!! :) I have the 600 and I've been looking at upgrading to the 900 with a back parcel overflow and your tank definitely makes me want it more haha Where did you get yours from?? Also what have you used/how did you mount the light hanging kit?? I have one sitting ready but haven't quite figured out how I want to mount it/ Sorry for the questions but love the tank and would appreciate some info :)

Thanks, the hockey sticks came with the cade. I was going to buy the mount that you can get for the Hydra's but they wanted like $100 so I went to bunnings and bought some black square aluminium tubing with the corner joins and made my own. Does the same job. I bought the tank from a LFS in deer park as well as all the gear but haven't been back there since then. I don't like it when retailers d#%k you around about ETA's and say 1 thing then say "oh I didn't say that". So he missed out on a few K worth of stock and skimmer etc.
If you ever want to buy mine, I will sell it to you cheap cause I wanna get a 5 footer.

cheers

Awesome setup mate, really beautiful.

I'm in the process of getting an HL900 priced up - do you mind if i ask what the system is worth the way you've setup yours?
Just trying to get a feel of what my outlay might be.

At the moment I my list was:

CADE Marine Tank Set HL900
Eheim 3000 return pump
Jager 300W Heater
Aqualina Spectre (lighting) x 2
Maxspect Gyre Generator 50w

I will also look to do a similar RO system as you did - what was involved with your bottled system?

Nice setup mate - looks awesome.

I'm getting my HL900 system priced up at the moment which is a back parcel type, was considering an internal weir but preferred the extra tank space.

How does your system run with the equipment you have? Do you guys have any advice on the equipment i've come up with below?

CADE Marine Tank Set HL900
Eheim Compact 3000 return pump
Jager 300W Heater
2 x Aqualina Spectre lighting system
Maxspect Gyre Generator 50w
Protein Skimmer Model To Be confirmed
Open to suggestions on the equipment especially the skimmer.

Did you want an itemised tally or just what I've spent so far with what I have??

Thanks for the reply mate.

If you can spare the time to itemise with what you have so far, it would be super helpful. I have my local Aquarium pricing up a HL900 system and want to compare it someone who's actually using it.
Any advice you could offer would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

I already have a tally drawn up coz I like to know what I spend on stuff. I allowed a budget of $5K but it did climb over that. Keep in mind that I bought items knowing I was going to upgrade to a larger tank down the road. I wanted to start small and get a feel for the hobby again and wanted to gauge how much time it would take out of my life. I am absolutely loving it so far and the satisfaction is fantastic. I have lost minimal stock so far and it's only cause of bad luck. I lost a lawn mower Blenny cause he jumped out over night and found him on the floor in the morning. I also lost my anemone due to changing water flow and it came unstuck from where it was and ended up my Gyre and minced. Apart from that no hassels what so ever. My heater failed 1 day but my seneye had that covered for me which alerted me of the low temp, so I quickly went home on my lunch break and threw in a spare. I didn't include a heater in the tally cause I already had one. I did buy another heater from ebay but it's going back so I'm still trying to source a reliable heater that it controlled via a controller. I will also include a very short video of how the tank looks at the moment.
Reef Tank Spend
Cade HL900 Tank $1750
2x Hydra 26’s $960
Hydra Director $100
Maxspect Gyre 30W $330
Smart ATO $170
Seneye Reef $130
Seneye WiFi Server $230
R.O Filter $330
60Ltr Barrel $49.50
30Ltr Barrel $26.90
Marine Pure Spheres 5lt $86
Reef Octopus NW-110 $239 (Temp Skimmer & now a spare)
Reef Oct Biochurn 120 $280
Vertex Bio Pellets 500ml $45
Red Sea Refractometer $89
Sicce Syncra Silent $109 (temp return pump & now a spare)
Nyos 160 Skimmer $559
Jabao DCT 4000 Pump $106 (current return pump)
Red Sea Live Reef Base $39
Live Rock 40kg $400
Salifert Test Kits x 5 $94
Red Sea Test Kits $137
Live Stock so far $1545
Total $7804.40

My misses saw this tally and gave me that look... :furious: :furious:
So I sent her to Malta for a few weeks and she was happy

I'm sure there's a few things missing but you get the idea.

Thanks for your interest.

Thanks heaps for all this info mate, really appreciate it!
Really gives me a clearer idea of what I'm up for.
I'm fairly new to reefing so figured it's best to start with a smaller tank.
I plan on sticking with my system for a fair while and won't be upgrading to a bigger one until we buy a house (renting at the moment) so it won't until then that I go to a 6x2x3 system which I'll be starting a new system all together.
I'm dealing with the guys at Majestic Aquariums here in Taren Point, Sydney and they've been great.
How does your skimmer perform? Are you happy with it?
Are you planning any further upgrades etc?

jury still out on the skimmer. I'm getting a pretty wet skim all be it very smelly, few chunky bits and fairly darkish. I was getting the same result from my very cheaper reef octopus with no micro bubbles. When I first ran it, I had all adjustments fully open and I was still getting a wet skim. Still getting quite a few micro bubbles as well. I'm sure it's broken in by now but i'll give it another week and if I'm still getting a wet skim with micro bubbles, I will start asking questions to the relevant people. I've just emptied the cup but in a couple days I will take a photo of it and maybe I'm expecting too much. The reef octopus was quite a bit louder but this thing is absolutely silent. Could it be cause it's big for my 350ltr tank?? It's sitting in 22cm of water which is what they recommend. I'm still happy with it besides the bubbles.
we'll see......

Fair enough, I've heard good things about the Nyos systems but I'll wait to see the outcome of Your system. Did the reef octopus do a good enough job without struggling? How loud was it exactly? I'd like to think by having it inside a cabinet it wouldn't be that bad. I'm still deciding if I want the back parcel of internal weir tank, might have to flip a coin.
What about your return pump? Happy with it?
