The Display and Sump tanks have been ordered and should arrive in 4 weeks

Here is my plan for the sump
Image
Untitled by Jason O'Connell, on Flickr

I will have the overflow pipes go into their own section so I can change the socks without taking the pipes off, and have all my top off water built in.
I plan to have the heaters under some eggcrate in the Frag section and I will make some dosing sections with a power head in one to stir up liquid foods to be fed via a dosing pump.
If anyone has any ideas/criticisms about the sump design it would be welcome. I am trying to contain as much as possible in the sump so that I can keep the rest of the stand tidy.

Change of plans with the tanks. I am picking up a rimless braceless starphire tank on saturday :pirate: it comes with a stand and sump but I still plan to build my own stand and sump because I would like a touch more space so I have a decent shot at keeping things tidy. Can't wait to pick it up

Are you going to run biopellets or zeo?

Not thinking of doing zeovit for this tank mate but I might try some pellets. The nutrients seemed to be under control on my last tank but I was water changing about 35% each week. Probably going to try and do about 10 -15% on this one. Going to try and have a decent depth sand bed on the display too. We will see how it goes, I am trying to leave extra space for more reactors etc if I need to add them down the track.

Skimmer I am a little undecided, aquabella is doing some great deals at the moment so I am seriously looking at the dc180. But then the deltec sc1455 is almost half the price and is supposed to be pretty good. I will nut it out over the next couple of days I guess. Lighting will just be the leds I have already for a while. I will probably have to keep my corals in the middle of the tank. When I have saved a bit more I will most likely get a powermodule or maybe even a hybrid if I have the cash. Planning on having this tank for longer than the last one so I want some reliable gear. I will have plenty of time to ponder while I am scraping the old coraline off the tank :roflmao:

So I ordered my skimmer! Ended up going with the RE DC180  big thanks to Nick from Aquabella. Also spent about 3 hours scraping coraline of the tank glass, next time I am just buying a new tank haha. So everything is going well, I am going to start selling my corals that won't be getting transferred. And the rest will go in the Frag tank I am setting up

Got my RE stuff!! :pirate: :pirate: Massive thanks to Nick at Aquabella  This gear looks and feels amazing I really can't wait to test it out, I think if it works even a quarter as good as it looks I will be stoked haha.
Here is some pics, I will have to take one of the new skimmer next to the old one cause it is hilarious how big the new one seems after all the nano gear!

And Nick even threw in a free grounding pole, cheers mate

Really cant wait to get this wet now. I can start to build the sump and stand now that I have the main items to go under there and I will hopefully buy my controller this month too. Then the last main item to buy is the lights which I am about 90% sold on the ATI hybrids. I will keep doing stupid amounts of research and getting in trouble for doing too much fish stuff for a bit longer though just in case something new pops up.
Cheers

Cant wait to see this progress, is your sump design still the same as the one at the top of the page?

Nah I have decided to get rid of the frag tank from the sump as I have set up a full time one in the garage. I am going to get a board this weekend and sit the skimmer and stuff on it and mark out how much space I realistically want around them and I will see if I can have some space left over for a fuge or a simple scrubber too. To be honest I didn't quite realise how big this stuff was going to be haha

Haha yea its big, if you do add your dosing containers to the sump i would actually just make a separate glass tank for them, because if your sump overflowed or you overflow your dosing containers you could potentially dump alot of Ca/Alk/Mg into your sump, best off to have it separate from the sump.

Also how good is Nick even throwing in a freebie top bloke...

Hmmm good point I hadn't thought of that. Still tossing up the idea of getting a calcium reactor too, see what space I have I guess. Going to be hard to stick to the rule of everything being contained neatly inside the stand................ :cop:

Woohoo, got my Apex today!

Now all I need is the Ati Hybrid to arrive( should be this week) and I have everything I need to start building the stand. I wanted to wait until I had all of the electrical gear so I can see how big my elec section of the stand has to be. With luck I will buy the wood for the frame this weekend and get started :pirate: :pirate:

Yeah chupa chup went down a treat! Really tempting to hook all this stuff up now! With the sump I am planning to build it custom size once I know how big my electrical section needs to be. My overall stand size has been set by where the tank is going. Should have a size hopefully this weekend and then I will order the glass

Pretty much the final big equipment purchase has arrived now, ATI Hybrid :pirate: :pirate: :pirate: :pirate:

Now I can start the fun part of building everything! Will buy the timber for the stand and maybe all of the doors and panels tomorrow and then bring on the weekend. Also this week I will be ordering my osmolator and wave pumps as my first fathers day gift haha. Almost time for me to have an actual tank in my tank journal

Cheers for the interest guys, hopefully the pace should pick up a little now I have less things to save for

I bought a cheap mitre saw and the timber for the frame and got started on the stand today. Hopefully I will have it all screwed together and sanded back tomorrow ready for some paint next week. I also bought a test panel for the cladding to see if I liked the quality and it looks great.

Image

It's looking like I should have enough space for a 2.5 x 2.5 sump so plenty of room for goodies!

Stand is pretty much built now. Just have to add a few timbers to support the light brackets and the dividing wall for the electrical cabinet. Got it sitting all square and level with some water drums to keep it that way while I screw the final posts in. Overall pretty happy with it and it is not going anywhere, I jumped on the centre beam a few times and it didn't budge.

So my work on the stand has been going slowly due to having 5 weddings over the last few weeks  But i did manage to organise some stoneworkers to make me a granite benchtop and I have given the main frame a couple of coats of paint so I can start to line the cabinet now.

Image

Image

And I have changed my lighting program around on the frag tank which is now going great guns. I was getting a fair bit of algae in there even with all of my water changes and low nitrates/phosphates so i decided to drop the white channel intensity/duration right back because it also has red and green leds on it. Now all of my corals have been growing faster and have been extending their polyps much more and the colours are heaps better. I also wired up an atc800 for the frag tank which has been awesome.

So I have been making some slow progress. I have ordered the glass to make the sump which should be ready tomorrow. I have changed my original design to work in with my available space and have moved to ato reservoir to another side of the cabinet along with the tanks for supps and automatic water change storage ;)
This is the new design for the sump

Image

And the stand minus doors

Image

I just have to do some more sanding on the doors I made and then they are off to get painted in 2 pac gloss white. its all starting to come together now so it should all be hopefully wet next month and ready for livestock by January :pirate:
