Postby izzywitt » Sat 31 Aug, 2013 9:03 pm

Introduction:
I have been in this hobby for over a year now and I am currently studying in Year 10. This hobby has provided many financial struggles for me, but at the end of the day the results are amazing and makes me wonder what I have got myself into. This will be my second tank, the first been a common 4ft tank. I was always wanting to go a custom tank that was built how I liked it, and have decided to go forward with the new tank that has been in the planning for months. The plan is to take it slow (this didn't happen with the first tank :wall: !) and not fill it until everything I need has been purchased and installed.

Construction on the stand has begun, but is now delayed as I ran out of screws. Will try an post images when the frame is finished, but here is some renders of what I hope it to look like by the time it is completed. The frame is made out of pine, which will be completely cladded showing hopefully no visible join lines. If any one can give me the name of a product that you can use to achieve no join lines it would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you painting or just leaving clear pine?

The plan is to paint the stand gloss white, would love to have it done with 2pak but this is too expensive.

Then just use builders bog for the joins. Then sand. Then I would use a spray putty to fill the grain ( unless you want it to show through)

Normal will come up nice if you get the surface nice and smooth.

Update

The stand frame has been completed and sanded, now ready to be cladded in MDF. My current tank is slowly coming down with the corals hopefully going soon and the fish will be kept in the sump (with the baffles removed) until the new tank is ready.

The project fish list includes:

Purple tang
White cheek tang
10x assorted anthias (lyretail, squareblock, dispar and a few others)
Borbonius anthias
Tiger blenny
Potters angel
Blue throat trigger
Wrasse, either mystery or candy stripe hogfish

Current fish I have that I may add include:
Blue tang
Blue/green chromis
Purple firefish
Clownfish pair

I am think of going an acrylic display for this build, I was wondering what peoples thoughts of this are? It is going to cost around the same as the tank in normal glass and I like the idea of the very clear view.

The plan is to use 12mm clear acrylic all the way around and do a 10cm euro brace around the top.
My inspiration for going acrylic is no other than the famous DSPS Tank From Thailand, I would love to have the low profile bulks that you can see on the tank but I cannot find them anywhere, if anyone one can help sourcing these it would be greatly appreciated (pic below).

These could work, but i cant find any suppliers in Aus and they are also quite pricey.

Re: IzzyWitt's ZEO Reef from Down Under

Postby izzywitt » Wed 18 Sep, 2013 9:05 pm

Update

I have decided give the ZeoVit system a go and purchased a KZ easy lift reactor (big thanks to Craig aka reef nerd). The tank size has change to a 4ft x 60(w) x 50(h) due to the cost of running a larger zeo tank. My old DT is currently been converted into the sump which will hold 4 chambers, skimmer chamber, zeo reactor chamber, return chamber and a top off tank will be built into it. I will post pics once it is completed but I still need to get the glass for the baffles.

Once again the size of the DT has been changed and I am going a tank thats actually smaller than my sump
The new tank measures 75cmx45cm(w)x35cm(h). It is a big drop in size but will allow me to put my select live stock in. I am just waiting for a quote to come back for the tank and then it will be ordered. One big piece of the puzzle that I still have to work out is the skimmer. I am looking at a Vertex Omega 150 but if anyone else has some suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Progress of the sump. Baffles still need to be attached as well as the back pane.

My KZ zeo reactor arrived today and I must say this thing is huge! Unfortunately the magnet cap had fallen off and exposed the magnet to rust but I easily fixed this with some PVC glue and some of my fragging super glue. The tank is almost ready to be ordered through Ernie at Reeflections the design is just been finalized and is as follows:
75cmx45cm(w)x35cm(h) external oveflow, starphire front pane, rimless and black silicone.
It is all starting to come together now.

My new toy!

Good luck with you build, but that's a BIG stock list of fish for a tank that size, in fact it's a nigh list for the original size.

If I were you I'd pick a few select ones you really want and go with that.

Yeah, I forgot to edit it, that was for the original 140x75x55 tank.
Im going to go with:

Borbonius anthias
1x Platinum Clown
Tiger Blenny
Ventralis anthias
Sunburst anthias
Helfrichi firefish
And possibly a dwarf angel

Its going to be a struggle to get them all, but i'm in no rush to stock it so I will have time to get the cash for the fish, will most likely go a few months between getting each fish. This work well in my last system and I never had nitrates showing on the test kit. I learnt slow and steady. Fish fish ever was a powder blue tang  What was I thinking!

all your fish are easy enough to get here but your anthias selections aren't compatible.

Update

A few changes have happened with this build a progress is slowly getting there. One of the big changes is that I am going back to the 140x75(w)x50(h) size tank due to the purchase of an ATB Small skimmer (thanks zeebul) which is rated up to 1500l and would be way to big for the smaller tank. I have decided to go with Billy from Starfire Aquatics for this tank as I have heard great things about him and apparently the quality of his tanks is amazing. I will have to see :) The stand has been finished and painted but I just need to attach the door and paint them. Excuse the bad photos, I will use a proper camera when I have livestock.

Stand (excuse the drum cymbal :) )
