SPS Reefspec

Postby Reefspec » Sun 09 Jun, 2013 7:39 pm

This is my fourth personal tank setup, my last tank was a mixed reef tank of over 650lt with much the same setup as below its was a great success but got sick of moving it around house to house so I had to sell it all off.

Sounds good!
The next one will be the real one though. 4000 litres is just massive. Will be nice and stable though

I have worked on large tanks before 3000lt and fine them a lot easier like you say very stable. I would like to build a
L shaped tank 2.5m x 1.5 plus have a large sump in the garage to grow frags etc but this would depend a lot on the house we buy.

Thanks siddr20

The blue tubes run my de nitrate & Co2 reactor and anything else that will need low flow.
I will post more photos for you when I get back from holiday the wireless is very slow here in Langkawi, these photos were taken a while ago so things have aged since then.

Well after running 8 days with no body home things have gone great apart from what looks like green coralline algae on the glass. Acros are still looking happy, colours maybe bit dul on some of them but are growing well.

Im loving the aquatic log iphone app here are my latest test results.

Image

Backed off the vinegar off bit as my micro algae starting to look sad I am guessing its from lack of NO3 & PO4.
Goning to give the sand a light stir soon to get rid of what looks like dino starting to grow.

Love the journal. Did you make that light box? I am liking the John Guest breakout build as well, might pinch that for my setup if I may

It looks like you have some great coloured SPS as well, great stuff mate.

Thanks slawman,

The power box you mean?
Yes I CNCed the holes for the switches and also made copper buzz bars and put in a din rail to bring it up to spec.
The forum is for stealing ideas mate take what ya like cos im going to pinch your solar tube idea for my next build...
I'm glad that someone other than me can see the ideas and use them too..

My SPS are going okay, the tank and rock etc is still very new so not the most stable tank at the moment and this is my first SPS tank too so still learning a lot.

Very neat, I like the indicator idea.

That blue SPS looks fantastic. The deep blue is one of my favourites....

Tank is looking good

They are some nice looking Millepora

The AquaticLog is pretty good. Just update your parameters on your phone, and it keeps a record of it. Then you can produce graphs and other readouts.

The only downside to that signature readout. It is ever changing and always updating. So if you post one up every day for a week, by the end of the week they will all say exactly the same thing (same parameters & tank age)

Hey Reefspec, love your setup man, with your nitrate filter the 2 600mm pvc tubes filled with de ntirate, what flow do you run through that? also do you feed the vineger directly into the tubes? if so how do you stop siphoning into your dosing tube? a checkvalve?

Thanks Jim

Around 200lt/hr for the tubes bleed straight off the main pump and yes I have the vinegar tee directly into the first tube which is dosed at 0.5ml per hr at the moment. My dosing pump does not siphoning back as its has three rollers in it..

Thanks Richie,

it's only 12ml a day which is not much in the way of vinegar.
I have it set at a level that keeps the NO3 & PO4 close to zero.

So time for a update:

Things are going really well & my growth rates and colours are the best they have been to date and I'm putting this down to me rasing my ORP up too 400mV and also the dosing of potassium now. My ORP was around 180mV before and even running ozone would not lift above 200mV so I came to the conclusion that the miracle mud must be holding it down (mud been organic) so out the mud came well little bit per day anyway and also all of my macro algae and what do you know the ORP started rasing up over the next week to my set limit of 400mv and the water is very clear and clean now.
Since my sump is now just a tank of water over the coming weeks I'm now going to convert my sump into a Frag tank and start collecting and growing pieces from the East Coast ready for the new setup late next year and also for Wa trading

Since killing off all of my tangs a few months back from dosing the wrong type of Iron :wall: I have now brought another Yellow Tang a awesome Purple Tang from Vebas oh and another baby Sailfin Tang cos the last one was such a cool fish! They are all getting on well and growing fast keeping the tank so clean they make reef keeping low maintance!

I have started dosing the vinegar straight into the Co2 Ca reactor as to feed the Bacteria in the tank vs in the de-nirate tubes can anyone tell me if this is a bad idea and if so why?

Thanks for reading

Just drilled and tapped the holes straight into the tube but you can buy PVC tee fittings.

Years ago when I first started carbon dosing I used "vodka" but found my corals didn't like it that much and it's expensive , it's known to feed cyno and hard to maintain at low dose rates so I started using vinegar and use to add the vinegar to my kalk to get more alk in my tank. To me vinegar seems more user friendly and cheap.
