Postal Tank #3 The sensible one

Postby Postal » Thu 23 May, 2013 9:10 pm

Introduction:
Tank #3 for me, I won't call this tank a dream tank or a no expenses spared tank because that's not true. I prefer to think of this tank as a good example of what i have learnt so far in this hobby, hence the sensible tank.
For a change this tank is going to have a much clearer expectations and plans, hopefully it turns out well I don't want this to turn into an unsustainable chore.
It's still going to cost a packet but i hope to make a lot more smart decisions when doing the tank.

System Objectives: Pretty much a sensible tank. I don't want to over complicate this tank or go too crazy budget wise.

System Type: SPS peaceful community tank with minimal rockwork.

Display System:

Strike up Date: Wet by end of June is realistic.

Display Tank: 1400mm by 500mm by 600mm, internal weir and eurobraced

Display Lighting: LED, can't be anything else.

Stand: Steel with adjustable feet. Cladded in White panels

Hood: Aluminium frame and cladded in white panels

Sump: Sump size not determined yet, it will only be a 2 chamber sump though, skimmer and then return section.

Support systems:

System Water: Natural salt water.

Display Water circulation: Two Tunze 6095's

Return Pump: TBD

Skimmer: Current front runner RLSS 6i

Evaporation Top Up: Tunze Osmo

Chemical Support:
Manual Dosing until dosing pumps, VSV dosing, Pete's Amino's and lots of coral food.

Adjustable feet turned up now.

Tank is underway with mr dennison

Waiting on steel stand quote.

Plumbing adventures this weekend need to source more rural fittings.

I have an issue i need some assistance with. My Chiller is under my floor so my return goes up 50cm or so into the wall down around 1m to the chiller then back up to the tank, from the bottom of the chiller to the top of the tank it would be about 2.5m.
What is the best estimate at the total head height i need for my return pump.

I had always assumed the head height to be the difference between the surface of the sump and the height of the outlet. Atmospheric pressure would assist the pump getting the water "down" to the chiller and back "up" the return to the DT to a height that is equivalent to the sump.

The greater concern on pump size is the losses caused by the length/diameter of the pipe, the number of 90^ turns, Y/T junctions and in-line equipment (ie the chiller).

Thanks Rusty yeah that crazy fresh water talk, who knows what I was thinking.

Nothing too much exciting except I bought a bunch of flexible pipe and then spent 20 minutes arguing at the store that pipe fittings would indeed work on it. The muppets wouldn't sell me fittings so i'll just go to another store :nut:

Got an ato, and organised and ibc, slowly ticking things off the shopping list.
