1500x800x600 peninsula build

Postby MitchD » Tue 07 May, 2013 1:49 pm

Introduction:
Hey guys, I've been lurking around the forum for the last month preparing for my new tank build and I thought it was about time I signed up and made a tank journal.
I've had my current 4x1.5x1.5 tank running happily as marine for around 18 months now with no dramas until it recently sprung a leak and dumped half the tank on the floor :furious:.
After a shoddy patch up job (still leaky near the top of the tank, it is 15+ years old) all of my livestock is back in with no losses, although it is low tide in there at the moment.
I took it as a sign that it was about time to upgrade, which brought me here

System Objectives: Happy & healthy mix of fish and coral
System Type: Mixed Reef

Display System:
Strike up Date: March 2014 :crossfingers:
Display Tank: 1500x800x600 peninsula room divider.

Stand: 1000mm high stainless steel stand, no cladding for now.
Hood: None if possible, otherwise connect-it from Bunnings to support lights.
Sump: 1000x600x500 racetrack style with inbuilt RODI reservoir.
Refugium: frag section.
Refugium Lighting: undecided.

System Water: NSW

Nice size tank, almost the same as my new build. Only comment at this stage is to check you have plenty of space to setup your beananimal plumbing in your weir. From the drawing it looks like you have about 125mm between each pipe which may make it a bit tight for space in there? What are dimensions of your weir?
The winner is the one who has had the most fun at the end

Thanks mate, I've drawn the overflow 750 wide x 250 high x 120 deep, but in the end I'll leave it up the the tank builder to do what he thinks is best.
Here's what I came up with last night using the bulkhead and corresponding hole sizes listed on here, and using this hole spacing calculator i found.
(Your solar build is looking really good by the way.)

here are the minimum requirements in regards to distance for drilling glass
x = 1.5 t
y = 4 t
t = glass thickness

measurements are taken from the outer most edge of the hole closest to the edge of the glass.

single hole along side: x from edge
single hole near corner: x from first edge, y from second edge
holes next to each other: x from edge, 4t apart
holes next to each other next to edge: x from first edge, 4t apart, y from second edge

It should work If I push the returns to each side, put the emergency in the middle, and have the main & backup facing out from the middle, it'll be tight but there should be enough room.

A couple of pieces to the puzzle.

Those wp-40 are huge (softball size) and move some serious water. I wasn't game enough to give it a go on my tank so took it over to my mates, 1 of them replaced 6 powerheads in his 5 footer and made a nice wave. He's got some of his own now as well.

I'll get some crappy pics up of my current tank soon.

Is that the DC 10000? I am running that on mine as well (if it is). I am impressed with how quietly it pushes that much water.

Yeah that's the one. Itching to test it out, I might stick it in a bucket over the weekend to see how it goes.

Next on the list of things to do is getting the skimmer sorted & sussing out a good tank builder in Perth. Any recommendations?

Ocean Reefs, Vebas or Seaview would be the picks I would say but there is a few others out there, my old man's tank is 10-11yrs old from seaview and well it still looks brand new never had a problem. (haven't dealt with them before)

IMO Vebas all the way :pirate:

The stand may not need any additional bracing. You noted steel, what size are you going to use?
My stand is the exact layout as you have drawn. I used patio tube (76 x 38) and it is fine. If your planning on making massive waves, that may be a different story.

You can have stainless steel wire to hang the lights from the ceiling. The only issue you may have is the raked ceiling. The wires need to be fixed to something solid, so you may have to trim in between the rafters to fix your wires to.

Thanks for the recommendations lads, shot Vebas a email the other week but haven't heard back, I'll give them a ring.
KAMOER Dosing Pump, Tunze Osmolator 3155 and Skimz monzter sm203 plus a few other pieces are inbound.
Engine room is pretty much sorted, just need a tank now :konk:

Thanks guys.
Will defiantly give my thoughts on the skimmer.
The gear turned up today, a birthday prezzie for myself. Will chuck up some pics.

Just did a water change on my current tank and the baby blue tang (15mm) I picked up about a week ago thinks it's a good idea to hide under my carpet anenome when he's scared.
Are these guys stupid or does mine just have a death wish lol?

Long time no post.
After a lot of procrastinating I finally got round to calling Vebas, they said to email through the plans so :crossfingers: I'll get some sort of reply.

Some of the gear I have sitting around

Here's some crappy iphone pics of my current system, pretty basic stuff. Note the low tide due to a leaky tank.

Loc-line ordered from Modularhose.
Plumbing parts from Dural on the way.
Finalized tank and sump quote was due yesterday so shouldn't be too far off. 1500x800x600 3 panel starphire with polished edgework.
Stand builder & painting sorted out, just waiting on the exact tank dimensions before going ahead.
It's all finally starting to come together.

Here's the final design I came up with:

Nice sump design.

What is the optimum water height for your skimmer?

Cheers
Given the skimmer came with no instructions I'm not too sure on the ideal height, but going off their previous model of about the same size, between 180mm & 250mm.
I'm going to make a skimmer stand with adjustable plastic legs like this one.
Image
(Pic stolen from Slawmans build, hope he doesn't mind)
Stand will be 1m high so there will be plenty of room for adjustment.

Nice detail on your drawings,
other tank looks good too! I'll be stealing the kitchen feet idea for my skimmer as well.
are you going to run your frame up the end to hide the overflow and plumbing?

Thanks Ollie, yeah the frame will be in line with the edge of the weir.
It'll all be hidden eventually, although cladding is a long way down the list of things to organize at the moment.

My resident smasher finally decided to show his face. He's only around 40mm.
He's doing a good job of keeping the vermetid snail population in check and getting rid of the odd crab, so I'll keep him around. He'll be sump bound in the new tank.

My return plumbing will be set up somthing like this:

I'm also thinking of adding a 25mm SCWD to alternate the flow from side to side. What's the general consensus on them? Worth the hassle or not?

I ordered mine direct from the US manufacturer and got slugged 80 odd bucks for postage, but I combined my order with a mate of mine so that made it worth it in the end.
They seem to post express by default (My order arrived in less than a week) So if you got in contact with them before you placed an order I'm sure you could get a more reasonable price.

Thanks mate. It's taking a while but I'm slowly getting there.
I tend to over think things quite a bit, which probably isn't a bad thing when planning out something like this.
Id say my sump alone went though at least 10 complete re-designs before I settled on the final layout, even now I'm stopping myself from making changes to it. :roflmao:
