Planting the seed of inception..."I NEED a bigger tank"

So I was happily reefing along with my old nano (see signature), all inhabitants were super healthy and getting along well, when one day my good mate Dave/bubbleboy suggested "Tony, why don't you get a bigger tank?"

That simple notion set off my brain in a million directions. For weeks, I contemplated and umm and arred, thinking about all the potential tank configurations and how it could possibly fit into my cosy townhouse's living room. Having spent good $$ on the living room decor, the tank had to be a pretty sleek setup and had to match the rest of the house, otherwise it was simply not going to happen.

Then during one of my days off work, Dave invites me over to check out a tank he has lying around. It was a 5 footer. :konk: :konk: "No way!" was my immediate reaction, there was absolutely no way I could fit a 5ft tank in my living room without taking up half of the living room space. :-s Confused but excited at the prospect of a bigger tank, I darted over to Dave's and we unwrapped the tank. It was an ex display tank for some aquarium mob who had intended on using the tanks to display aquarium gear at aquarium shows, but for some reason it was never purposed and remained brand new in a cardboard box with plenty packaging around it.

Image
Image

As we unwrapped the tank, straight away, I knew that I had to find a way to fit tank into my house. It was perfect. Rimless, 10mm glass, clean black silicon joins and a sleek lowline, white stand. :-x :-x :-x
 I took some snaps, showed the missus and her reaction was nothing short of a miracle, she actually said that she liked the tank!!

Where do I put it in the living room? Who knows, but the challenge was accepted!!

Looks like a very nice sized tank, going to be tagging along to see where you find a new home for it!

Thanks Kell, I'm usually very bad at keeping tank journals up to date but I think this one deserves to be documented.

priscacara wrote:Looks like a very nice sized tank, going to be tagging along to see where you find a new home for it!

Thanks priscacara  It's a very cool size, almost feels like a large nano, rather than a small 5fter.

The design brief

In my last post I mentioned that I didn't really have anywhere to put the tank. I spent hours thinking about where to put the tank, envisaged placing it in a number of places, but the reality was, there was no where to put a 5ft tank without making it look cluttered. So the only real option I had was to place it directly behind my sofa, to partition the space between the sofa and a small shrine in our living room (for those of you who are wondering, it's a small shrine used to pay respect to our ancestors and domestic gods that are meant to protect the family and bring good health rarararara).

In order to do so, the tank had to be slick, lights had to be unobtrusive and ideally, the tank would be viewable from 4 sides!

I found some inspiration from other reefers:

So I decided... my tank needed to have:

1. 4 sides viewable
2. eurobracing to minimise splash damage on to sofa / surroundings
3. lights had to be hung from ceiling
4. minimal visible equipment and power cables inside tank

Building out the tank!

I gotta say, planning and building a reef tank is one of the most enjoyable phases of keeping a reef tank for me as it gives you a chance to unleash creativity. But once that's done, the hard part is executing the design, without rushing or cutting corners as I'm often tempted to do as you just want to get the bloody tank wet!

My old tank and inhabitants were also sitting on the ground in a slightly unloved state, so I also wanted to hurry along the build to give them a bigger and better home.

So on with the pics...

Image
Decided to go with a single piece euro brace, (the Extreme Reef special..., in this case we screwed up and ordered the wrong size...hahahaha, oh well, I wasn't too fussed so Dave and I managed to salvage the brace by cutting it into two. You can see where we've cut it if you look closely), a single offset central weir and 3 bulkheads.
20mm for return, 25mm for drain and a 50mm for powercords and doubling as a backup durso (more on this later!)
I was conscious of how much space I had to work with and would have liked the weir to be smaller but a 18cmx20cm weir was the smallest I could go. The alternative was to line up the bulkheads in a line and make it narrower.

Thanks for the kind comments guys, much appreciated
Been a while with lack of updates... been pretty busy with work and planning a wedding!

Building out the weir!

So in my last update i mentioned that I wanted a sleek looking weir to hide all power cables for pumps as well as the cables for the light unit from the ceiling. In order to do this, I needed to use 50mm bulkheads.
Man, these things are big! (yes... that's what she said ;)).

I ended up using the largest holesaw possible and the result was this:

Image

Massive fail!! I ended up using a smaller diamond tipped holesaw and grinded away very slowly to make the hole large enough. With lots of patience and very sore arms holding the drill upright for 3hours in total, I ended up getting there.

I also decided to cover the weir with coral rock rubble and small pieces of dead rock in order to cover the weir piping. The idea was to create a bommie around the weir but having limited space meant that building a rock pile around it was not possible. I ended up using lots of silicon and stuck pieces all around the weir. The end result -

Image

Image

With Aqua Medic weir combs in place thanks to Something Fishy Aquariums

Image

So what do you think about the weir?? I wasn't 100% happy with it but the plan is to have green star polyps, zoos and other matting corals cover it :)

Nice build luzinit. The weir should look cool with bits and pieces growing on it. Looking forward to seeing this up and running.

Do you get much direct sun onto the tank from that window?

Sorry for the lack of updates, have been pretty busy with work lately! :(

Due to the way the stand was made, I couldn't fit a long sump into the stand without cutting out the support, so I made 2 sumps and joined them together. Works well :)

Image

You can see how I fed the cable through the 50mm PVC pipe, had to cut a slit for it where it exits halfway down the pipe. It's also used as a backup return, which is why I've created a drip loop for the cables.

Image

Good news is that I filled up the tank with Red Sea Coral salt which I had lying around and transferred all my stock from my holding tank.
Here are some pics I took of the inhabitants with my iPhone 4 and a macro lens attachment, very cool!

I've been really slack with keeping this journal up to date. A lot has happened in the last year, I got married and went on a fat honeymoon. That's not to say the tank was neglected, it's still doing great!

For reasons mostly unknown to me, I lost a few fish in the last 6months or so. I lost a Mystery wrasse, flame hawk, bicolour blenny, tiger blenny, 1 bangai cardinal, 2 blue eyed cardinals and 1 kleins butterfly (which was doing a cracking job on aptasia before I lost it due to whitespot).

Current fish stock list:

1 pair of a grade picasso clowns that are regularly laying eggs!!
watchman shrimp + goby pair
3 blue eyed cardinals
1 bangai cardinal
yellow tang
blue tang (who has tripled in size since I bought it off Charlie on these forums)

I have a feeling I lost some of the fish to the gigantic blue carpet anemone that is dominating the left hand side bommie on my tank, as most fish were showing no signs of ill health before mysteriously disappearing!

Tank has grown in a fair bit, everything is doing well. To date I still haven't setup my auto top up. I've swapped out the Tunze 6065 for 1 x mp10 that I had lying around, in combination with a Jebao WP10, which is doing a much better job of creating an oscillating wave throughout the tank.

Anyways, see below for latest pics taken a week ago off my phone camera.
