Lin's 3x1.5x2 in progress

Postby linnx » Wed 27 Mar, 2013 4:47 pm

Introduction:
Hi everyone. I only have joined the saltwater for about 6 months. Nearly finished setup/stock up my first 80L nano. It is the maintenance and waiting game to hope all SPS will grow. The first one is always to test the water and see if I can manage to keep something live and of course i learnt my lessen, had to wear the cost and now I think i am ready to play it a little bit bigger, just a little bit bigger. My wife always complained about only me can enjoy the view (tank is on my desk) and it actually cost the family quite a bit (she pay for the electricity bill). And my 18 month daughter was disappointed when i shutdown my planted tank to get ready for reef. I always try to keep the cost down but still spend quite a bit for some of the equipment so i can upgrade later to a bigger tank if everything permits. So here it is:

System Objectives: To create a healthy and SPS dominated reef display that's a pleasure for the family to watch and enjoy.

System Type: Mixed reef but SPS dominated.

Display System:

Strike up Date: March 2013.

Display Tank: 3x1.5x2 with a centre weir.

Display Lighting: ATI Sunpower Dimmable 3ft 8 tubes with GHL matris light bar for moon light simulation and sunrise/sunset

Stand: Wooden stand.

Hood: got a new hood to fit the ATI

Sump: 2ft sump with skimmer in 1st section, probes and frag section in 2nd, biopellets reactor/chiller pump/return pump in last section.

Refugium: No

Refugium Lighting: 20k full spectrum Par38 globe

Support systems:

System Water: mix of NSW and ASW

Display Water circulation: Vortech MP 40 x 2 (replaced the 2 x MP10 i have and all live stock enjoy the extra flow.)

Return Pump: waveline 3000
Skimmer: Tunze 9006 with sump kit. has an external skimmer ordered on its way.

Evaporation Top Up: Tunze pump with Profilux optical sensor

Chemical Support:
GHL profilux controlled dosing pump
Calcium Addition: Randy's recipe A
Alkilinity Addition: Randy's recipe B
Magnesium Addition: Randy's recipe C

Other Chemical Maintenance:

Some photos of I am packing small piece of live rocks and coral rubble into my canister filter. Not too sure if that is a good idea.

A nice size tank for the second one, you have done a great job on the 80L so looking forward to seeing this one!

RO/DI water in the tank and mixed with salt now. Very strange that i actually had a lot of white dust either floating on the water surface or settled on the pumps and bottom of the tank (i have no sand bed yet). I have brought some live rock and it is in the tank. My live rocks/matrix canister filter is also connected now. I was told the Tunze 9006 i ordered is out of stock now. Need to find another store or another model will fit my tiny sump.

haven't had time to update on this for few days now. i guess i am just lazy.

i took my chance to introduce a pair of clown since it was a really good bargain but they didn't last over night. They are dead on my mp10 this morning.
Ordered a Tunze 9006 from another online store and it is sitting in LPO for pick up and will pick up and get it installed tomorrow.

i have stated to dosing seachem stability to help with cycling since Saturday. i was using the left over red sea mature kit i have from my 80L and that is run out now.

all my water parameter are good enough for fish now but i was told live rock would have other things that we can't see and may release toxin chemical. so i guess i will wait for another 2-3 weeks before i introduce anything.

Nice tank upgrade :) Consider a clean up crew before attempting fish... snails, hermits, an urchin even.

i have 3 snails and 1-2 hermits in the tank. may need to get more. Tunze 9006 is in last night and have a bit skimmate this morning already.

it has been a long time that i had change to take photos and update here. i've gone through a RTN (keep the water too clean and not feeding the coral enough) with all my SPS but manage to save half of them. Gone through a white spot out break which take away my beautiful helfrichi pair. i am also slowing switching my tank to a full zeo system tank and i am having a little bit issue with the Vertex ROX carbon. i am guess they are too strong and aggressive.

But here is some of the photos

Has been long time i had a chance to update this thread. Being busy with the tank all the time.

i got rid of the old tank and get a 3 x 1.5 x 2 with centre weir built with a 2ft sump. moved from full zeovit system to biopellet with zeo additive hybrid system. Played a bit with rics cutting and growing and now i am into mini maxi propagating.

with the new tank i rescaped the whole thing and had a sump fragging area to grow stuff. had some bacteria bloom that killed almost all my fish and had some mystery infection that will kill any fish i put into the tank. i am now stocked back with 2 tiny tang (1 purple, 1 blue), 2 helfrichi, 1 yellow watchman goby and 1 mandarin.

Brought a second hand Profilux system from Matt and still trying to configure it to the way i want. Changed from LED to ATI T5 and yet to see how it goes.

are you using a recircutlaing reactor or just heavy feeding?

i wont say its heavy feeding but i find out my tank is actually P limited so i can't feed too much nitrate such as AAHC. so start to feed more SP and start to dose phytoblast, microblast & zooblast via dosing pump and feed gonipower etc because i have a lot of goni, few gorgs in the tank and a lot of clams. that eventually raise up my P as well so i can feed 1 drop of AAHC 3 times a week, xtra, CV and food7.

i do have GHA and some macro algae but they are not very under control and mainly in place that doesn't have much flow (yeah, i stocked up the tank quite heavily). i think my rock is leaking P(used some old rocks when i started this tank). Pull GHA off and push macro off once a month when i do WC. going to put in lawn mower blenny to do that for me. i have very little algae on glass. i only clean my glass twice a week which mainly because the bio/bacteria film.

Tank is in a low nutrients system that if i stop feeding 1 day my alk/cal will raise because my coral will stop taking them. so i guess i have very good healthy growth at the moment.

i know this is an older post but if its of interest. If im on a computer without any photo editing software. I select the photos i need to resize and send them to a new email, when you add them to a new email it askes you if you want to resize them to make to file size smaller to make it quicker to send and use less data. and I email them to myself, getting them back to me as smaller files.

Cheers

i am busy with the new born along with a 2 yo for the last few month. work is also helping to put stress on. everything is quite down now and we are set into routine.

I will put some pic up tonight i took couple of month ago. Trialing this new product from US called Nualgi and it works out quite good for me so far. i have removed my BP reactor and just doing zeostart3 dosing with matrix. nitrate is at 0.5 and phosphate is between 0.02-0.04. i am think put the matrix into my old zeovit reactor see if that will help to bring down the nitrate to 0 (not necessary but just want to try). i am feeding less now but still have very good growth. i think that's how nualgi works that it kicks start the nature cycle of nutrient export.

i am also considering introduce an angel to the tank to control PE. havn't set my mind on this yet. but i will be setting up a nano to hook up to this tank for mini maxi and softies.
