Introduction:
Hey guys, I've been into fish for a long while, 10 years since I got my first tank. Only about 2 months ago I was sitting at home with the tank that I've owned for all of this time (just a small tropical tank) and thought I'd love to get the variety of fish that marine gives. So I decided that I'd look for a forum, as I've been into cars for a long while and the forums have helped me a lot. PS It's weird to be a noob in the subject area of a forum :konk:.

I've been helped by rodneyri and Bandit a lot here, and I'm now in the midst of getting things together.

Thanks for the support guys. Yes Rod, the lights turned up safe and sound, put them on quickly to ensure they made the journey unscathed, which they did.

Looking forward to getting into it. I'm in the process of designing/starting to build the tank stand. I'm getting the frame made from 40x40 steel and going to have it clad. Looking at a super glossy white finish, how do you guys go about that? Wood that's sprayed OR order it from a Laminex type place? Trying to keep the cost down as much as possible so I can afford some fish LOL

So the tank stand making is well under way now which is quite exciting. Given the concern I have over weight and the floor that it'll be on, and the need to find out exactly how the floor is constructed I'm alarmed at quite how heavy everything is!!

Oh well onwards and upwards:

Good start! Frame construction looks very similar to mine (and probably half of RTAW's) :)

I know I know, very original. But I believe if it aint broke, and in this case looks really nice, then don't fix it!

Couldn't agree more.... in fact one of the earlier tank stands I built was a direct rip-of of Rod Ridikas' old tank, including the floating tank setup

So I'm still slowly progressing. My mate has continued in making the stand which is turning out nicely. (note that the light stand has to be cut down a little, but better to make longer first and then cut than the other way around.

I also pulled out the return vent in the lounge to see what the underside of the house looks like, I can't tell anything so more investigations will have to be had.

Finally, I've placed my faith (as I'm new to all of this) in my tank builder for the design of the tank (which I'm really happy with) but i'm not sure of the plumbing side of things, it seems here that the preference is for a bean animal system, but i have 2*40mm holes and 1* 20mm hole, I've been told by the builder that the middle (smaller) hole is for the return and the two outer larger holes are for the drain, is this going to be okay?

Hi obsessed1,

I do have updates. In fact I have been working hard at getting my tank stand comleted (well hard for me anyway). I will start to upload some more pictures very shortly of my efforts. I am just tryin gto find a good kitchen bench joint to do my cupboard doors and side panels, as I'm happy with my painting of the top and sump shelf, but it will not be up to scratch for the purposes of the parts you can easily see.

Hi guys,

Well I promised an update a LONG time ago. I've been really excited to get the tank ready, but everything it seemed got in the way, however we are on the home straight now!

I'm very happy with how it is progressing. Anyway below are the new pics of me setting it up in my garage as a test run.

thanks for reading

Looking good, mitras is very powerful , and 2 for 3ft tank i wouldn't cut the light stand, you will love to have the space on top of your tank just my opinion. I now a 6ft tank with LED 1000mm above water, nice set up keep up the up dates.

Thanks for the support guys.

So more progress. I went to Clark Rubber yesterday and got a piece of high density foam to place the stand on. Wow that stuff is expensive, it was $118 just for the 4ft by 2.5ft.

Anyway, I placed it on the tiled surface that I'm placing the tank on. This is the best place in the house as it is a cement slab. There is a draw back in that the room is fully made out of glass, but I have no where else that I can put it, so I'll have to deal with that.

I also went to my LFS and bout some polystyrene for between the stand and the tank.

Next up is plumbing.

The only regret that I have is that I wish that I made the stand slightly shorter. Oh well.

So here are some pics.

Hello, this has unfortunately gone nowhere. My wife and I have had one child, another on the way and renovated the house. Not sure if this is going in the new house, or bend to what my wife wants and buy an all in one like a redsea max or something? Do you get anywhere near what you spent back on these things? I presume not?
