Introduction:

Aquareef 195 Family tank.
We have kept fresh water on and off for the past 10 years, and have always looked on in wonder at marine tanks. About 8 months ago i convinced the wife to let me buy a nano tank the give it a try. I got a aqua medic blenny 80l, and i love it. I have spent the past year reading journals and info from reefpedia and I now feel like I have some of the basics sorted. I also feel like i have gotten to know some of you. There are truly amazing tanks and people out in the RTAW community, and i am constantly inspired. I am hoping I will learn much more by doing a journal and getting feedback from you all.

Its not really my thing, keeping journals. but i will try to keep it updated with pics.

I have had this tank cycling for the past 2 weeks. I started the cycle with 3 kg of LR rubble in the sump. I added 6 kg the following weekend, and i have just added another 6 kg of LR that i got from M+. I havn't had any ammonia spikes as yet, no nitrite recording and nitrates are around 1ppm. I havn't had any notable loss of life from the LR, so i am happy with the cycle so far. The rock is amazing! I scored a helio, lots of zoos, a torch, lots of fan worms, a tube worm(?) a brittle star about 120mm across and lots of baby brittle stars.

Once i work out how to put photos up i will post some.

Cheers Ollie

Like the tanks, both looking good. Your live rock looks to be full of stuff , head start on a few corals on it if they make it through cycle. I hadn't seen much of the 195 model , looks like a good unit.

Hey mate.
yeah very happy with the 195, for an all in one it seems to be a good tank. I dont think you could custom build for the price. i have a 6 2 2 custom tank sitting behind the couch that was ready to set up, spent many $$ but after our last power bill my wife put her foot down and told me i had to down size, :wall: The 195 was the comprimise. it is a nice size and shape and hopefully not to costly, mind you once you start upgrading the costs start to add up haha. it is funny,.. my apprentices talk about what lift kits and tyres they want for there 4wd and i talk about what power heads and skimmers i want to upgrade to. :roflmao:

I am hoping the corals will survive, i have been adding the rock slowley and i havnt seen much of a spike so hopfully they should. :crossfingers:

cheers ollie

Hi Rick
thanks for the comments. sadly my corals and fish are no longer happy.

My wife woke me up at 3 am as the pump was making strange noises. i walked out to find our beautiful orange tipped nem had been chopped up going through the grill.
the tank was milky white :bawling: we moved all the corals over to the new tank, and did a 70% water change on the nano, with another 20% this morning.

I am not sure what to do now. the corals look happy in the new tank, with everything at full extension. other then the daisy, half is still closed. :wall: also we lost the rainsfordi. :bawling: i realy liked him. RIP

i suppose i just have to sit tight . i am hoping the new tank will support the bio load, and has cycled long enough :crossfingers: . i was hoping to give it 3 more weeks.
I will just keep an eye on peramiters and moniter ammonia etc.

I was also going to pick up my mystery wrasse tomorrow, but i think i will wait now and make sure the tanks are stable. or am i overr reacting.

ollie

HI Ollie
I had a Nem get into my pump a while back & same thing it got blitzed & the tank looked white I was lucky it was in the afternoon & I was home so I did a 50% waterchange then & another 50% the next morning & was lucky enough I didnt loose anything .
If it was me & your nano looks clear now Id move the corals back into it as at least the nano is cycled properly & if you have any Ammonia in the other tank it will kill the corals & fish dont like it either & yes good decision wait a bit longer for the Mystery Wrasse unless you are going to Quarantine him which will take 6 weeks & your tank should be fine by then.

HTH
Cheers
Rick

Time for an update.

Both tanks are fine after the scare with the suicidal nem. We lost two fish and some mushies though.

I have re-scaped the 195 several times now, its really not an easy tank to scape. I think we will just have to be happy with what we have.
Luckily the boss has directed me to set up the 6ft so i probaly wont have to put up with it for to long. :pirate: but we will see.

New scape. Thoughts?
Image

Not a great pic, due to it being cloudy after the scape.

I have added a lawnmower blenny and a mystery wrasse and a couple of morphs. Big fan of the mystery wrasse. very cute fish!
he and the lawnmower seem to be good friends.
Image

we also got a flame hawk for the blenny tank. its a great little fish but very shy.

We thought we would give some sps a go, so we got a pink birds nest. so far so good,

We are happy with how things are progressing,
Tanks for looking

How do you find the build quality of the aquareef tanks? I don't mind the look of them but haven't had any time to really have a good look. And what do you think about the standard sump? Do you have any pics of it?

I like them, seems to be decent quality with the only exception being the lights. Most people want to replace them for leds anyway so not a big problem, I'm on my second set that has a few problems but its just stuck away in the cupboard now.

I have to watch when cleaning the glass it seems to scratch very easily...................could just be me not paying attention and getting a bit of sand on the scouring pad (teflon).

Hey mate.
Yeah the build seems good cant go past it for the price,, although i probaly wouldnt get another one. I have changed the return pump to a eheim compact 3000, i am looking at ati pm lights and i want to upgrade the skimmer, after all that i could have custom built a really nice tank.

I find the 195 really hard to scape as its only 450ish from front to back and there is a big weir in the middle.

The sump was modified to allow for a refugium, there is a pic above of the sump.

My wife has asked me to finish setting up the 6ft as it will cost the same to finish setting it up as it would to upgrade the 195.
so this tank will either be sold or my qt.

I think it might be worth it if the tank was the aquareef 400 , because you could justify the upgrades but spending $$$ on 2ft stuff wen you are sure you will upgrade down the track is hard to justify.

I walked past a 275 a couple of weeks ago and it looked pretty good. Do you know if they use the same sump? It probably would be worth just spending that bit extra and getting a custom system. I know I wouldn't keep the skimmer of lighting and by the time those are upgraded you would have spent the same on a custom 2ft cube.

If it was me I would custom build.
Having said that The advantage of the aqua reef is it is done. I have spent a year collecting stuff for my custom build, until my wife got fed up waiting. Hense the all in one... Haha. :konk:

The sump comes stock as a trickle filter. Just a matter of moving a baffle down and adding two more to make the bubble trap. But other ppl don't mod it and it works for them.

I think I would have preferred the 275. More room to scape and volume. Keep in mind It has been discontinued, so there won't be many around.

Didn't realise they had been discontinued. Oh well.... At least I was starting to steer in the other direction. A mate was looking into upgrading from his orca tank and I suggested he have a lok at The aquareef tanks seeing as he is pretty new to marine tanks and would give him a good idea of how sumps work.

Sorry to hear your closing it all down but then they wouldn't fit as carry on luggage :-). Was good to see you enjoying the hobby, maybe start up again when relocated?
