Grumpy’s & Memaws Reef!!

Postby Nemo777 » Fri 26 Oct, 2012 8:15 pm

Introduction:

Hi all and welcome to our tank journal.

Firstly let me explain the names, in April 2011 we became Grandparents for the first time. and will be grandparents again in 2013!!! My husband wanted to be called Grumpy(what can I say he is a man always Grumpy!!) and I wanted to be Memaw ( I watch way to much Big Bang!!) So that's we got our names. Our grandson loves the fish tank..he calls the fish daddy's!!

Grumpy and I got our toes wet with an Aquamarine tank in April 2012. Now it is October and we are already upgrading to a bigger tank!! So you could say we are both truly hooked on this fishing addiction!!

Both Grumpy and I love the Great Barrier Reef, he is the diver I am the snorkeller. We have been in awe of the reef since our first visit in 2002. Since then we have been several more times. We have also visited other reefs...like the one out the front our resort on the Cook Islands. BEAUTIFUL is an understatement!!

So now it is time to upgrade...upgrade to what was the question. We finally decided on the Aqua One Aqua Reef 400 in white. Our other choice (if we had more money) was the Red Sea MaxS 650... this one is next!! As Grumpy says, small steps are required to achieve our ultimate goal in order to do things right!!

Great intro to the TJ! Love the Aquareef 400 in white too, it looks awesome. Those rugrat fish can grow to a decent size but it takes a while so your safe for now :-)

Hi Grumpy & Memaw,

Great starting point. Am impressed that you are taking it slowly, plenty of time to research and hopefully not make too many mistakes.

All the best.

Rod.

PS. We are enjoying our second grandchild. :)

Day One and Two

WOW!!! What a lot of work that was..took us all day Saturday to get the tank and sump built and in place. Filled it with water nearly to the top. Took a few hours and countless trips into town. Once to get the return pump from the lfs as they forgot to give it to us. The other times to get more tank water!! We have two water tanks that needed to be cleaned, so we had to drain them..luckily two of our daughters have tanks as well.

Cleaned the sand and coral sand lots which took more water. Can't and don't want to use the town water..it is a bit dodgy!! :o

Anyway all done for now..added the live rock from our existing tank to the new one. Left one piece as the our rose bta loves it and wanted to leave something for the fish to hide in.

Have tried to aquascape, like it for now but will see. Not a lot of live rock we know, not sure if we will add a whole lot more though..prefer the simplistic look.

Will do water testing later on today...

Also want to pull out the bio balls any suggestions as to what we should replace them with?? Was thinking deep sand bed.

Hey Grumpy and memaw.
Your scape looks good
I am a fan of the white stands, it looks a little cleaner i think.

We are doing a aquareef 195 at the moment and we have had the sump modified for a dsb. then i have rubble and macro on top.
you need to lower the first baffle and raise the second one and add a small third one low. There might be other ways to do it, like a tub or container for the sand, it can just sit it in the middle section, the pros would know more.
enjoy

Just did the water... Calcium and Salinity are low..waiting on new salt to be delivered then this will go up.

Will also bond the rock together once we are happy with the scape.

Hope to start transferring fish and corals over next weekend. Fish maybe first then corals. We hope this is o.k to do???

We will probably take more water from our established tank and put it in to the new tank as well.

Hi Guys,

and welcome to the AR-400 Club. great choice in tanks... i am a little biased lol.

bummer on having to move the tank it would of taken some effort.

looks like you are travelling along nicely so far, only suggestion i'd make is putting the 2 heaters in your sump (looks better in my opinion as its less cluttered) and maybe check your live rock isn't to close to the glass thus preventing easy cleaning whilst doing maintenance and will give the fish a little more swim options.

We tried to put them in Mike but they wouldn't fit :(

Agree it would look nicer...although we a have a Blue Tang in our other tank that hides behind the heater!!

Will be moving the rock around again on the weekend, trying to aquascape again. :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

Tried to use bonding agents...but we worked out that Grumpy is allergic to them  :(

Ah well we will manage.

Its all looking good great job so far.
The heater should be fine there as long as they are submerged to the minimum line, and by the looks of it they are.
On another note your air intake for the skimmer, make sure its up above the water line as you could have a little accident when the skimmer is turned off and create a siphon.
I am not addictive person I just get mildly obsessed with things.

With my water level U had to lean my heaters to keep them under but have them in the same spot as you :-)

Thanks for the photo Mike, we are going to try this on the weekend when we do a water change. Agreed it will look nicer :)

One Issue we are having

Is our calcium is quite low.

On the 11/11 it was 340...with 1.025 salinity.

We are mixing our own salt water using Red sea salt.

Should we dose with calcium or leave it till after the water change and hope the salt brings it back up? ( this is what has been happening in our other tank)

Thanks

UPDATE TIME

A lot has happened this weekend. Woke on Saturday morning to find the tank very cloudy, immediately thought major ammonia spike.

After further investigation realized oue rose bubble tip anemone gone. :bawling: It was last seen on the glass next to a water flow unit...need we say more!!

The tank was a mess :bawling:

Quick decision was made to transfer all live stock and corals to new system as all the parameters were good.

So one day after all it good, fish are well, coral are well. No signs of stress. :crossfingers:

Thanks Priscacra...I love the goni/alveoporas as well...Would have a whole tank full of them if Grumpy would let me. I have brought some online and some from my lfs.

I hope to get a few more as well as different types of hammers. Then we will concentrate on getting them to grow...then enjoy siting back and watching.

Well not a lot has happened since the last update.

"Charlie" has white spot so him and his friends has gone to a treatment tank. They will be treated with hypo salinity for the next 8 weeks.

This will give Grumpy and I some to re aquascape the tank. We hope to re-position some new corals we got and make sure every-one is happy

New tourch

New Goni

Over the next month or so we are planning some upgrades.

1. New led lights
2. New chiller
3. New tests
4. New wave makers
5. Reef monitoring system
6. Dosing pumps
7. Auto top up

and Grumpy wants a transfer pump, so he doesn't hurt his back as much :sneaky:

We have also the sump. We have added Marco Algae and some live rock and took the Bio balls out.

Will post pictures later after we have re organized some things.

Update time

So over the last few weeks we have changed a few things.

We have had a change of mind with where we were going. We are still building towards a mixed reef, but are choosing more carefully. We have started down a new path with coral and fish selection.

We have changed our circulation pumps to the Aqua One 20000. They seem to be good so far. They stick well with the suction cups.

We also have changed our lights we are now running cree 256w from Guppys. They are pretty good..love the moonlight effect.

Updated coral list

2 toxic revers hammers
1 Goni
1 Duncan
1 Dragon soul favia
1 Green centered star polyps

Updated Fish List

1 Purple tang
1 Lipstick tang
1 Gold headed sleeper gobby
1 Lawnmower blenny

Others

2 Hermit crabs
3 snails
1 Green BTA

Hammer

The Goni is not coming out completely...we had a maroon clown fish try and host it. The clown continually knocked it over. We think it will recover with time.
