Postby babyreefer » Wed 11 Jul, 2012 12:51 am

Introduction:

Hi! It’s babyreefer here! :wavey:
I am in Sydney CBD and started marine fish keeping in September 2011 last year. I started fish keeping with my husband’s suggestion :poke: and little did we both know that we will soon be addicted and how difficult it is. :wall: Actually addicted is an understatement. :nut: With the support of RTAW members I have made it this far.

With the suggestions of many of the RTAW members I am diving into a custom tank! I am scared to death but I have RTAW if I get stuck!

I am keeping my set up simple to start with. I have never done anything like this before so PLEASE do not hesitate to advise me on anything!

 Thanks to everyone who helped me to get started; pilonstar, parrdog, joely116, rodneyri, ryanrid, firstsalt4me, chrispc66, wmackay, peekandboo, liquidg, Darr1nBilly, rockerpeller, Heliman, astroboy , ClayLutt, AussieReefr, Billy from Aquatic Addict. My tank is a product of all your suggestions and ideas! Thank you!

(added later)I plan to make this TJ pic heavy and full of reviews of products so please keep watching~~*

 SO HERE I GO!

System Objectives: Great home for my babies(my fishes-I call them my babies) for many years to come. Shallow / minimal rock
(added later) My approach to this set up is to purchase best possible equipment at my budget as I do not plan to upgrade for few years. My first tank was set up from a fresh water tank in 2010 sep. and I felt the need to upgrade in just few months; I dont want that happening again~~* :nut:

Don't go to bunnings . Get all your plumbing needs from dural irrigation online, it's free postage and 1/4 of the price

Do you know what you need?
Look up wet earth too :)
20 mm for siphon and return is heaps, 25 mm for durso

I have ordered off WetEarth before I was told about Dural irrigation , don't bother with WetEarth as postage is around $15 and dural is free and cheaper for parts

If you end up having a full siphon and a durso (the one with the curve at the top) the siphon and and your return pipe doesn't need to be any bigger than 20mm. Durso 25mm as insurance if something blocks your siphon.

Nothing wrong with bigger... But just a bit harder to tune. A bit if useless, 20mm can take 6000lph no worries :nut:

Make sure you run, full syphon, durso and emergency over flow, and ask the tank builder to drill two holes in the back of the tank for return lines one can be decated chiller return and the other just a return, if you have big enoung return pump everything can be run off one mainafold style pluming that's the way mine is run and im glad it is that way too so easy to add reactors and uv sterilizes stuff like that.

Thanks everyone on plumbing advise. I have two overflow in the middle and two smaller return on each side. My tank maker said he will drill 45mm and 35mm accordingly to fit bulkhead. PVC pipe to fit will be 32mm and 25mm accordingly.

The violet LED really helps with the subtle colours you may lose with just your blues/whites. If you don't run violet you may lose out on having really nice Pink/Reds.
Looking forward to some pictures!

lol ~~ Thanks for that!
hmm... I have soo much to learn!!!! I am still a beginner~~~~ lol :wall:
I was considering illumagic and when I saw it at the store I was really concerned that it wasnt going to cover 2ft wide. It looked not so bright but nice colours though.
Also I read at various sites that it can't really grow SPS that well. Vertex say that they can grow any corals. one of the key points of my decision.... BUT I did not consider the colours.... :furious:
Being my first led I actually dont know what to expect from vertex~ I just heard review that it's really really good and super bright~ and got great coverage~

Maybe I will add violet down the track~

Pics!? Hell yeah~ I want to make this TJ pic heavy with lots of reviews of products~

The vertex is one of the best led units on the market, your setting your self up for a very nice long term tank, the way you have done it now will save you money in the long run, as you wont be upgrading all the time, I would have gone vertex but it was like $6,000 for my tank, so bought radions instead

Some of the Online strores had 25% off last month. I got mine during the sale period. :) Otherwise I wouldnt of been able to afford either. Still with 25% off it was out of my price range but I traded my bthday and christmas present for it. lol :furious:

Thanks for saying that! It makes me feel soo much better. Yeah! that was my approach. I felt the need to upgrade in few months with my first tank. So I think better to spend now then loose money and time along the way~~* but with vertex I got a find a metal fabricator to hang this 4ft 13kg light...-_-;; another spending I didnt consider before going ahead..-_- :wall: :wall: :nut:

You have made a very good purchase. When Rodneyri says that remember that he does have one awesome tank is ALWAYS on the lookout for ways to improve it. I think you will find the vertex to be perfect for what you want it for :)

Hi Baby Reefer,

Def get violet or UV in your lights as soon as you can. As you know i had just blue and whites and have just added Red's and Uv's. A good person to talk to is Peter from Oceanarium over here in W.A he has a shed/business full of LED lights on alll various different corals. he gave me the advice as mentioned above about keeping reds/pinks.

Good luck cant wait to see Pics of your new tank.

Thanks for your support everyone!!

Here is my fish list - viewtopic.php?f=46&t=242978&p=1051486#p1051486

FOR SOMETHING TO LOOK AT
MY FAMILY MEMBERS waiting for their new home.

"Dr." - He is currently out of the cleaning business as nobody wants to get cleaned... :konk:
Image

"Cream Junior" - such an angel! loves watching me whenever I am in front of the tank.... If he can talk he will say "Wh~at ya doing~~" :roflmao:
Image

"Sparrow" - He is soo cute!! He recently started eating spectrum as well!! yay! I think he accidently tried one and liked it~ :roflmao:
Image

"Banana" - He is sooo shy, he hates the colour red. so whenever my hubby is wearing red, he has to take it off at the door... lol :roflmao:
Image

"Tango" - My baby "tango" recently learn how to do "Ah~~~", Whenever I do open my mouth and say "Ah~~" He opens his mouth also~soooo cute!!!
He loves lying inside the cave on the sand and watch me. How do I know? I recently moved the tank from next to my bed to another area to make room for my new tank and he use to always hang next to the bed where I slept but now he hangs with Banana on the other side of the tank where he can watch me. He pokes his head out of his penthouse shell and says hello whenever I get close. Awww I love him sooo much!! Mommy is sorry the tank is delayed~~ :( (Word of advise to beginners from a beginner~ DO NOT BUY TANGS IF YOU HAVE A TANK SMALLER THAN 100G!, I had plan to upgrade but it's been delayed by 6months now... :wall: GET THE BIGGER TANK FIRST RATHER THAN PLANNNNN TO MOVE HIM LATER! Please don't make the same mistake I did) My poor baby~~!! :( Thanks to all those people who offered to help my tang, offering to lend tanks and all. Thank you!! I think he will be more stressed if I try to catch him~~
