good to see this finally taking shape, looking forward to tagging along for the ride Dee, If anyone can get SPS cranking under an LED it will be you. I'd be looking at retrofitting some violet LED's into the unit if you want to keep pinks and reds though.

I run a simple 100W LED unit on my system 50/50 white/blue and am keeping reds and pinks with absolutely no issue at all. Anyone that has seen my pink birdsnest in person will agree that it is about as pink as you can get!

Sorry to hi-jack the TJ - look forward to tagging along as it might inspire me to ditch the RSM and do a new ground up system.

G'day Gents ... and Al :poke:

Thanks for all the comments

Yep, looking forward to seeing what can be achieved with LED's  Having seen some successful SPS tanks around that run on LED's only, I am relatively optimistic :crossfingers:

I always say this ... But I remember when I was first investigating T5's for SPS 3-4 years ago before diving into a T5 only driven SPS tank. Back then there was a LOT of naysayers and speculation saying that T5 did not have the intensity nor spectrum to sustain good SPS growth and colour. Although at that time there where a bunch of Euro reefers with thumping SPS systems run only on T5 ... I am hoping that it is a similar case with LED's :crossfingers: Time will tell. :pirate:

Hi Louis,

Yeah mate I was in Sydney with work for 3 years before returning to Melb

Aint that the truth ! Your shallow 4ft SPS reef was a major influence for me ... absolutely loved that tank :-x Daryn1 did wonders with that tank too ;)

G'day Mate ...

Currently thinking along the lines of ...

Lori Anthias - 6
Royal Gramma - Pair
6line Wrasse - 1
Potter's Angel - 1
Red Spot Blenny - 1

Regarding the blue bottles ... Yeah the K balance is great, just have to tread lightly with it, as overdosing can cause issues  Pohls Extra is a goodie too ;)

Nice Dee, can picture it already, out of curiosity what issues do you come across with k balance overdose?

love the fish choice too

I love the fish choice, too :).

I like the choice of going with one variant of Anthias too, it will look very effective.

:withyou:

Pretty much what Rod said

I found when I went a little overboard with K Balance that the SPS looked "dusty" ... in that colour went flat, washed out and tips looked brittle. I think similar issues can arise from over doing it with sponge power too as I was using both at the time of the issues I had.

Cheers mate

Regarding the scape ... I'm unsure at this stage  Due to tank dimensions, choices could be limited ... maybe.

First idea is to go along the line of my SPS rimless tank I had in Sydney ... I do like a low flat scape, although this time around I would include more stags to grow up through the scape.

Old Syd Tank -

Image

Second idea is to go for the two island/bommie idea, similar to below I like the depth this gives and like the style of scape ... as to whether it would work in a tank this size ?

Two island/bommie style -

Image

Final idea would be a Bonsai style scape and as much as I love them ... a) there's less room for Acro's  b) I don't think I have the design skills to design what I would be happy with :nut: ... Although if I got the right live rock I'd love to give it a shot.

Bonsai style that I like -

Anyway ... not sure which way I'll go in the end :pirate:

I like the bonsai, but it's awesome to have a low scape and watch it grow out.
Ive got a really low scape (25cm) in a 2 foot deep, and it's not looking great now, but when it's 15cm taller and all grown out I'll have a nice 3 step shallow reef scape covered in corals.
If I was you; id go for a hybrid of a shallow island and the bonsai.
Either way, when you've got 2 years of coral growth any scape looks good IMO!
