Uglyman's 4ft LED lit mixed reef - TOTM April 2012

Postby uglyman » Mon 13 Feb, 2012 5:46 am

Introduction:
Hi everyone :)
I have been keeping aquariums for about 20+ years, mostly fresh water tropical but I decided to get into marine about 5 years ago and have been loving it ever since. This tank has been a learning experience all the way from drilling it to making the cabinet (Thanks to my better half/cabinet maker). I have changed it a lot along the way and have experimented and learnt new things as it has evolved, the latest evolution being LED lighting and I am sure I will be learning more as I continue in this mad hobby.

System Objectives: My objective for a tank has been to create a mixed reef which is heavier on the SPS side and to have more corals than fish so the corals become the centre of attention.

System Type: Mixed Reef/SPS.

Display System:

Strike up Date: July 2007.

Display Tank: 4’ x 18” x 18”
Display Lighting: Two Maxspect G2 160w.

Stand: Custom built (by my wonderful girlfriend/cabinet maker) out of recycled victorian ash and corrugated iron.

Hood: Open top no hood.

Sump: 2.5’ X 15” x 15” with 2 compartments, one for inflow/skimmer feed pump/return and the other a refugium. Both chambers are fed from overflow with their own feed lines.

Refugium: 4” DSB with caulerpa.

Refugium Lighting: PAR38 LED Spotlight.

Support systems:

System Water: NSW/ASW

Display Water circulation: 2 Vortech MP40w ES.

Return Pump:Aquaone 2000lph.

Skimmer: Reef Octopus Hurricane 500

Evaporation Top Up:Tunze Ozmolator

Dosing Equipment:Bubble Magus BM-T01

Chemical Support:

Calcium Addition: Calcium Chloride (Premier Chlor pool brand)

Alkilinity Addition: Sodium Bicarb (PQ pool brand)

Magnesium Addition: Mag Chloride/Mag Sulfate aka Randy’s recipe

Strontium Addition: Seachem Advantage Strontium

Iodine Addition:Seachem Iodide

I have been running the Maxspect led's for 2 years now Deester and I am glad I went with them even though they have had a few annoying problems.

Oh and I will put up some more pics when I get a chance.

My maxspect have had the 4x violet(UV) LED's in them until 2 months ago when I noticed quite a few of my blues and also the violets were showing signs of lens darkening/melting. So I have replaced all of the blue LED's and the violets have been replaced with 2 red and 2 pink LED's.

Thanks for that info :)

were those photos of the pink seri taken before or after the change and have you noticed any pigmentation changes since switching over the LED's?

The photos were taken before changing the UV's and blues, since the change the birdsnest has not changed colour at all although it looks a little pinker because of the red LED's I think. I must admit though the growth rates of all my sps have increased and I am having to increase my dosing pumps schedule of Alk and Cal to help keep up.

Unfortunately atm I am losing one of my acro's the pale purple one (10th photo from top) I have lost about 70% of it so far, ever since I purchased this colony it has never had much polyp extension and very little growth. After a recent serious Alk swing I think it had finally had enough and I dont think it will pull through.

I find the pink corals and corallines etc really pop under the red pink emitters

Love the tank :)

Curious what the methodology is in adding silicate?

:withyou: Very True

After reading about Randy Holmes Farley's silica dosing I felt that his opinion as to the benefits for sponges has it's merits and since dosing silica I have seen a noticible increase in sponges in my tank. Recently I have had a blue coloured sponge appear on my maxima clams shell and it has grown to about the size of a 10 cent piece, previously I had very little in the way of sponges in my tank and as far as I can see they should be beneficial since they filter the water. Another thought I have had about dosing silica is would increasing the diatom levels in the tank due to dosing silica help feed certain corals as when I overdose by one drop I find I will have a small diatom bloom on the front glass which when scraped off is distrubuted throughout the water column. I have noticed a feeding response from many of the corals shortly after using the algae magnet to remove the diatoms from the glass so I assume the corals may be consuming the diatoms from the water column.

Anyway here's a link for silica dosing http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php halfway down the page.

 and thanks for the read  I will look into that further myself I have some beautiful big sponges in my sump I attribute a lot to their filtration capacity.

My macro used to do quite well under the PAR38 bulb but I had to replace it every 6 months as I found the bulb lost intensity and macro growth slowed. So switched to a PAR38 led bulb that was given to me by a MASOV member and found macro growth to be amazing until the bulb died in a puff of smoke unexpectedly. Currently I am running a DIY LED that has four 3watt 10,000k bridgelux led's using a Jaycar led driver and a laptop power supply and the macro growth has been amazing. I will post up a few picks of the new DIY led when I get a chance.

Cheers Shane that would be great
Got some plans for a fuge, would be better if I can keep it under the tank (using LED) rather than a stand alone (using a 250 halide).
Bit of a novice with the LEDs - I have 3 white and 3 blue Cree bulbs (3w) I put together as an experiment.
Is that on par (heh heh) with what you have set up?

A few shots of the new experimental LED fuge light, excuse the ghetto hanging kit but I did not want to go all out with a sexy hanging setup and find the LED's were not up to the task.

Oh and scotto those LED's you have would be enough depending on the dimensions of your refugium although the blue leds are not necessary as macroalgae grows well under white leds just fine.
