Tremble's 3ft Adventure - Happy 3rd Birthday!

Postby tremble » Sun 08 Jan, 2012 4:07 pm

Introduction:
Sooo... I put down the deposit for my new tank yesterday so figured it was time to start my tank journal! I currently have a 2ft tank around 70-80l but decided a couple of months back I wanted to go slightly bigger and opt for an external sump as opposed to my current HOB filter. So, after a couple of months of research and planning it now begins!

System Objectives: Something that looks good (not only the contents but the tank and stand as well) and is reasonably easy to maintain.

System Type: Mixed Reef (leaning towards LPS)

Display System:

Strike up Date: 26/02/12

Display Tank: 3' x 18" x 18" with external weir (18" x 3" x 8")

Display Lighting: 2 x EcoTech Marine Radion XR30w Gen 2 Pro

Stand: Self build, pine frame with MDF cladding.

Hood: None

Sump: 2' x 15" x 15". Three sections: skimmer -> DSB/Fuge -> return.

Refugium Lighting:

Support systems:

System Water: NSW

Display Water circulation: 2 x MP10WES

Return Pump: EHEIM compact+ 2000

Skimmer: Royal Exclusiv Mini Bubble King 160

Evaporation Top Up: Tunze Osmolator Nano 3152

Chiller: Hailea HC-300A

Chemical Support:

Reactor:
  • 1 x TLF 150 reactor running RowaPhos.
  • 1 x TLF 150 reactor running Carbon

Dosing Pump: Kamoer Dosing Pump - dosing Ca, Alk and Mg

  • 2 x Ocellaris Clowns
  • 1 x Fire Goby
  • 1 x Flame Angel

Looks good, can't wait to see the progress. If you can try and go 36 x 24 x 18. The extra half a foot gives a bit more room and makes the tank appear a lot bigger. Nicer for scaping as weel. I was going to get the exact same size but was talked int going 2 foot wide and now I couldn't be happier. Otrher than that, love the design of the tank!

Thanks for the reply tony. It was suggested to me before to go for 24" wide but it would have been a bit too wide for the space that the tank is going to be sitting in. If it wasn't for the weir at the back I might have gotten away with it, but all combined it would have ended up 32 wide.

Got some goodies today! First up, my LocLine for the return has arrived...

Which has now been put together...

I actually got enough parts to make two of these, so the other one along with the tool will no doubt end up in the classifieds soon :)

The plumbing has also arrived!

I picked up some pipe from Bunnings earlier so I will start to mock up the plumbing either later tonight or tomorrow. I'll post more pics as I put it together.

I plan to set up the light on my current tank so I can acclimate the inhabitants to the new light before they get moved over to the new tank. More pic to follow!

Normal and necessary to avoid shocking the corals due to a change in light intensity and spectrum :)

With LEDs especially it is REALLY important to acclimate corals to the light.

:stupid:

Once i figure the best way to set up the light with my current tank, the plan is to start with the light at 50-60% intensity and slowly ramp it up over the next few weeks.

Is there a controller for the light ? or does it get controlled via the vortech wifi controller ?

Im guessing if 1 x light is good for your tank then 1 should be heaps for my 2x2x2.5 yeah ?

it is a worry how little amount of LEDs are on the unit compared to other units on the market which makes it more confusing.

The controller is build into the unit. You can hook it up to a laptop to configure various things like the time of sunrise and sunset and the intensity of the different LED colors at different times of the day. It also has a wireless controller so it will sync up with other Radion lights and Vortech wireless enabled pumps.

My plan is to try one light initially but I may end up having to get a second as I will be right on the edge of it's capabilities. I think EcoTech recommend one light for a 24" x 24" area. I am by far no expert on this, but i would say for a mixed reef you would be good but if you were going hardcore SPS you may want to think about 2 or even supplementing it with some T5's.

Have you set up the light yet ? I'm hanging out to hear your thoughts and see light spread as I want the same light, but so unsure...

Hi NVRENUF, I had a look on Sunday at setting it up with the current tank, but since it doesn't have a light stand it is a bit awkward (the current light has legs which sit directly on top of the tank). I'm figuring that the best way will be to use the light stand which I've ordered and hook that up with the old tank for now. It should hopefully arrive in the next day or so once I have it setup I will post some pics.

My light stand arrived yesterday!

As planned, I have hooked it up to my current tank for now. I ended up using a combination of the cade hanging kit and the Radion hanging kit to get it hung the way I wanted it. Here's some pictures of the current setup.

Quick update. Got the tank measurements confirmed yesterday, so started work on the stand today. Still got a couple of supports to put in and clad it with MDF but got the main frame together along with a coat of undercoat/sealer/primer. Here's a picture.

Image

I'll post more pictures over the weekend as I finish off the frame and put the skin on.

I've been a bit slack with the updates, but the stand is pretty much all ready. Ill that is left is to sort out the doors, a bit of sanding and final coat of paint. I am pretty pleased with the way it has turned out, pictures are below:

Also, got an update on the tank and it should be ready for me to pick up on Friday! Still need to get the acrylic sorted, so depending on how quickly i can get that I may be able to wet the tank some time next week! Exciting times!

Sooo..... I picked up the tank and sump on Friday afternoon and the tank looks awesome, Dennison did a great job! I love the one piece euro (apparently it's the first one Dennison has done). :)

Spent a some time over Friday night and Saturday hooking up the plumbing. Currently running some freshwater and vinegar through the sump. Did a leak test of the over flow and all seems good! Pictures below:

Image

Image

Here's a few pictures inside the cabinet, the ducting should keep the cabling nice and tidy.

Image

Image

Image

I ended up having to go with 90° corners. I thought I had left just enough of a gap in the back to go with 45° corners but I *!@%$# up slightly on that one. Hopefully the 45° corners won't cause to much noise. Got a T coming off the return to make water changes a bit easier. Currently have this open to cycle the water through the sump for now. If I have enough water left after a water change on my current tank tomorrow, I plan on replacing the FW with SW and getting my DSB and huge up and going.

It is sitting beside my current tank at the moment which makes it look so big!

Image

The only thing left before it gets wet (i think) is the acrylic for the back. Fingers crossed hopefully I will be able to get that done up some time in the next week.

edit: fixed up picture links
