Re: Rods new project - TOTM Feb 2013 - SHUT DOWN

Postby rodneyri » Sun 13 Nov, 2011 11:37 am

Introduction:
Ive started a new TJ for my new tank, well if you have been following my old TJ you would know the reason I pulled down my 3yr old tank...got sick of the stand and wanted a new one for those who didnt follow my old thread! So the long planning stage took place in Jan 2011 to design this tank, I was going for a cabinet to match the rest of my furniture and to hide the ugly chiller.

Now for the other reason for changing tanks, ive had a few types of lights over my tanks and with all the hype about LED I thought id give it a go. So many different opinions on this light if it can or cant grow corals, colors and the like. Well I liked the low power, no need to change tubes (so the manufacturers claim 50k hours we will see), less heat, and fully programmable. So after alot of thought I decided to rip down my old tank, take frags and start all over again from the ground up to really see what these LEDs can do.

I have kept my birdnest which I grew from a frag and a few small SPS I have grown from frags. No wild colonies to really see how I can go with this system.

Now picking the fixture, I dont have a hood so a full pendant had to be the way to go...coming from the giesemann and ATI PM it had to be aesthetically pleasing...so Vertex Illumina 1200 it was. I wanted to do this right so coughed up alot of cash for this light as it best suited my needs.

So I invite you to join me on my journey with growing a SPS tank from frags under LED

System Type:
SPS Reef and some nice zoos

Display System:

Strike up Date:
22nd October 2011

Display Tank:
Custom 140 x 75 x 55 (l w h)
Left corner weir with Herbie system - its very quiet and primes itself once the weir has reached its level. Highly recommended overflow

Display Lighting:
Vertex Illumina 1200-200 LED - gone
ATI Powermodule 8x54w - gone
GHL Mitras - gone
ATI Powermodeule Hybrid 8x54w + 3x75w LED

Spectrum chart I took with a friend. These will be updated through the life of this tank to monitor the degradation of the LEDs

Stand:
Steel frame clad MDF

Sump:
Dimension 90 x 50 x 40 ( l w h)
Running TLF FBF with Rowaphos and Carbon

Support systems:

System Water:
Natural Sea Water

Display Water circulation:
Vortech MP40W, Hydor copies

Return Pump:
Eheim 1262

Skimmer:
Bubble Pioneer Cone skimmer

Evaporation Top Up:
Auto top up - RODI water

Chemical Support:

Calcium Addition:
Turbo Calcium Reactor - ARM Coarse media - Keg King CO2 - Tunze Regulator

Other Chemical Maintenance:

Current Water Chemistry:
pH:8.0

your right Scott, we snipped a bit off the frag you gave me and its grown about 3mm too, even through a tank change over...seems like a tough lil bugger :)

Hows yours coming Jamie, did the kitchen company get back to you yet ???

Ive learnt alot from the first one Locuus, where from next....well im going to change over to dosing pumps from the CR now I have a large cabinet I can fit up to four 20 litre drums so wont have to change over and be less maintenance

No news yet, Rod. I spoke to one of their workers today who is a family friend, so hopefully that results in some good news for us.

Cheers,
Jamie.

Top notch tank mate. May I ask what bulb combinations you have in the LEDs? Colours look great!

What stock are you going for fish-wise, mate? The base is a bloody good start, will be interesting to see what you can conclude as time goes on.

You found Carberryis? That's awesome. It's nice to see a break from the traditional either Dispar or Lyretail setup that most seem to tend towards.

Did water test today as ive been dosing AA for the past week daily.

Nitrate 0 (salifert)
PO4 0.02 Hanna
Alk 8 (bumped up CR a bit)
Cal 420

Should have SLR next week for some decent shots...if I can figure out how to take pics under LED

Shoot RAW, underexpose slightly, turn your white point to about 30000K, and reduce your vibrance and saturation slightly.

Haha alright. I found the LEDs tend to oversaturate things a bit and the sensor freaks out, so the saturation etc needs to be taken back to a sane level.

lol will do Edi, have to learn the new camera so hoping some nice shots when it arrives

Thinking of adding a vertex illumilux strip at the rear of the illumina to give wider coverage, my scape is quite low but wide with the 750 deep tank, will play with the illumina to decide if i go with the w/b or the w/rb mix. plan is to have these on only when the light is fully ramped up.

Hey Rod,
Your tank is fantastic. Seeing your tank has made me re think my tank and mines only 6 weeks old. I was toying with the idea of a larger stand than tank but ultimately did not have the balls to do it. I wish i had waited till I saw this.

thanks Dave, bigger cabinet does look the goods....also a slightly bigger tank than the light looks better too.

Just do it, change the cabinet, the longer you leave it the harder it will be
