Mike's 3 x 3 x 1.5 LED Rockpool - Rockwork Done!

Postby GunmetlFairmont » Tue 23 Aug, 2011 10:10 am

Introduction:
I decided to pack down my 6ft and try something different, after pricing up a similar setup to what is below I was given an opportunity to purchase fellow MASAOG members set up here in Canberra. Most of you will recognise this as Keith’s (Unagiman) rock pool system which he had great success with and I am hoping to achieve the same great results!

The main thing you will also note is the cabinet is no longer black, but a nice semi gloss white so it fits in with the rest of the house.

System Objectives: Mixed Reef but mainly SPS dominated

System Type: Mixed Reef

Display System:

Strike up Date: Soon! Currently filling with water!

Display Tank: 3ft x 3ft x 1.5ft Starfire Glass

Display Lighting: LED’s from Marine Plus (BSLEDS)

Stand: Custom built, Gloss White

Hood: Custom built, Gloss White (in progress)

Sump: 650mm x 450mm x 300mm

Refugium: Macro

Refugium Lighting: Small LED

Support systems:

System Water: artificial salt water

Display Water circulation: Closed Loop, run by a Sequence 18000S running through an ocean motions 4 way unit

Return Pump: Pentair Quietone

Skimmer: Skimz Monzter SM201 (on back order)

Evaporation Top Up:Auto topup (gravity feed for now)

Chemical Support:

Calcium/Alkalinity/Magnesium Addition: All three elements to be added via the BM dosing pump setup.

Current Water Chemistry:
Nitrates:
Phosphates:
Alkalinity:
Calcium:
Salinity / Specific Gravity:
Magnesuim:

A few quick Snaps from once I had the tank in place.

I also have a door ready to mount for the front which will tidy off the cabinet nicely.

My closed loop plumbing is all done, it wasn't too bad to put together, Keith did a really good job with this.

I also received my LED lights yesterday Super quick postage from the guys at Marine Plus in Adelaide  and all I can say is the LEDs are bright, looking forward to getting these over the new tank! I will be starting to build a hood for the LED lights over the weekend, but at the moment I am just filling up with water.

The plan is to get the rock work how I want it and let it sit with no fish or corals for a while and see if it cycles, if it does then once everything settles down i'll add my corals and fish!

Mike

Looks like an awesome build. I got similar size tank and will be watching how your close loop goes. I always wanted to do a close loop in the future.

Very nice Mike.

I saw the tank in all it's glory. Can't wait to see it back up and running.

What are you planning on stocking it with?

No zeo or bio pellets at this stage... I did dabble with the prodibio stuff once before and really thought it didn't acheive anything to be honest.

I want to keep it fairly simple to look after too, our first bub is due in January, so I wont have time to be playing around with the tank everyday.

Dont think I want to get that crazy tho!

So come on then Mike, Stop keeping us all in suspense :konk:

How did you go over the weekend? Get the tank full?

Cant wait to see it up and running mate, and just remember to have the nozzles on the closed loop outlets before turning it on, as i remember Keith saying that he almost sprayed his roof when he turned that bad boy on for the first time. :roflmao:

I was working some crazy hours last week, so I didn't achieve much of anything to be honest. I didn't even make it to out to grab the wood for the hood over the weekend! :wall:

Should be full of water by the weekend if all goes to plan this week.

I remember Keith saying he sprayed the roof :roflmao: Hopefully that wont happen to me, will just have to make sure the ball valves are not wide open!

From what I understand these lights are rebadge BSLED's, there is a massive thread about them.

I saw these running on the Marine Plus SPS tank and I liked the look of everything with the mix so I thought i'd give them ago. Ended up grabing two so they should light up the tank nicely

Been a long time between updates!

Had a few issues with leaking bulkheads, so i replaced the lot and now my ocean motion is playing up and not rotating around and the broken connection that was repair by the previous owner looks to be leaking now as well so i've got to sort those couple of issues out over the next few days!

Good news is however, it is full of water and I transfered some LR over today, pretty happy with the placement so far and i'll try and get a photo tomorrow.

Hopefully over the weekend i'll be able to start my hood to get those LED's mounted and then monitor the levels to see if it cycles at all, if not :crossfingers: i might have the fish and corals transfered over from my six footer in the next couple of weeks!

Good progress mate but it sure took you long enough :) :)

Im awaiting the AoA shipment for my skimz impellor too. Might be worth giving Ben a call mate to make absolutely bloody sure that your new skimmer has the new impellor fitted. I wasnt so lucky and got the old impellor....hoping the new style impellor fixes the problem :crossfingers:

:poke: :poke: Now you just need that hood done lol

Sounds like it might finally be starting to come together for you mate. Good news.

The oceans motion unit, if its plastic, you may need to get it plastic welded. Just a though.

You will have to get a pic up of the new aqua-scape mate so we can see what she looks like.

Sounds like it isnt going to be long til you get the little :clownfish: :clownfish: in there which is great news

I know, i've had a few other things to take care of, but i was slowly chipping away at the tank when I could!

Yeah they are the the new ones mate, hence the delay apparently as skimz was slow to get stock to Australia

That looks like a very good start to doing it the justice that it deserves to uphold what Keith achieved with it.
