Fugs' Red Sea MAX 130

Postby Fugly » Fri 12 Aug, 2011 11:32 pm

Introduction:

Hi all,

Quite new to the MASA forums, though always had an affinity for reefing. I used to possess a 4x2x2.5 tank with a bunch of bits and pieces about 6-7 years back and got bitten by the bug again recently.
So now that my addiction has resurfaced, I decided to start out small this time and build up to something bigger later on.
Happy to be a member of MASQ and already trying to stop my brain falling out from all the great advice, opinions and knowledge people have been assisting me with.
That said, onto the important stuff! The tank!

Just finished building and setting up my new Red Sea MAX 130L
Aiming for Fish, Softs & LPS at this stage whilst I plan a larger project.

System Objectives: Nano tide over project (Will hopefully one day become breeding/fry storage tank)

System Type: Mixed Reef

Display System

Strike up Date: 12/8/11

Display Tank: 24x20x20

Display Lighting: 2x 55W T5

Stand: Red Sea Totem Cabinet

Hood: Red Sea built in

Support systems
System Water: Instant Ocean + RO

Display Water circulation: 2 x Return built in Red Sea pumps

Skimmer: Built in Red Sea Skimmer

Nothing special yet but I am looking forward to the progression.

Couple of images here of the end of a busy afternoon/evening.

Looking good mate, be good to see how it goes.. keen to hear aobut the other project :poke:
Dam it, I crashed it! It's true, "only bad things happen in reef tanks overnight!" Lesson learnt.... The hard way!!!

So two weeks in and I've added LR and a clean up crew. Went through a fairly heavy diatom blanket so decided to do a water change and pull the lighting hours down quite considerably.

Here is my aquascaping so far, it seems to look okay and leaves plenty of spots for corals and refuges for fish.

Nice 'scape, Adam. Should be interesting to see it play out. You decided on lights yet mate?

Not a solid idea just yet Ben, as Dennison called today to let me know my 2' cube is finished and ready to go. I will let this cycle some more and then do a swap of everything into the cube methinks. After that, this can become the QT.
I am thinking the Ati T5 fixtures are still going to be the best option. Just going to have to see what I can chase down as far as a 2' fixture goes.

Swings and Roundabouts

Postby Fugly » Thu 15 Sep, 2011 9:37 pm

So time for an update.

I lost the crispa nem and the male perc (strangled inside the crispa) to the new MP10 circ pump :(
The female perc stressed heavily for a couple of days but survived the barrage. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the decora :( Poor goby didn't handle it very well and deteriorated quite rapidly :bawling: .

Since that happened, the female perc has shown great signs of recovery and everything seems to be normal again. She has quite an appetite these days.

I've also been stocking up on some colour lately with a few new Acans.
Took a few shots of them and one of my larger snails to give you all some eye candy.

how many positions have you tried your vortech? Is there a optimal postion in the RSM so a better flow?

Whats that sensor at the back ?

The sensor at the back is temp.

I've tried both sides, forward and back and I've found this works well with my current aquascape and the two return outlets. I point one stock return upward, to agitate the surface for more oxygen and the other down and to the side wall to improve the circulation by having it flow into the MP10.

I used to have it against the back edge but I have found it performs better if it has more space around it to draw water from.

Fugs' RSM 130: New shiny LED toy!

Postby Fugly » Tue 20 Sep, 2011 11:44 am

Acquired my new fixture today. Very impressed so far, can't wait to get it home and put it over the RSM for a trial before my other tank endeavour.

To be honest, anything over the stock RSM lights would have been a big improvement since they are PCs.
Having said that, I think they are phenomenal for what I spent on them. Great functionality, ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing also. I thought they would look out of place on a tank that is supposed to have a 'self-contained' look about it, but this is not the case at all.
The corals look freakin insane under the royal blues/cool blues and I only have them at 50% so far! :o  :-x Even the combination of whites and blues is a far more vibrant look overall than my previous configuration.
Looking forward to giving a few pieces of SPS and a clam a g,o now that I have something to support their lighting requirements. :pirate:
