Introduction:
Hi my name is Shane, I've been keeping marine tanks for years with my first tank at the age of 15 back in 1997. Back then there was limited information and I had to rely on information from LFS's. Now there is a wealth of information out there with people now achieving the once impossible.
Initially I wanted to do a bigger tank but I'm buying a house in a few years so thought I would start off with this so its easier to move.

Good to see another 4x2x2 starting up.

Mine should be wet in about 2 weeks I am guessing.

Look forward to seeing some pics once the project begins

Tank and stand look good mate.

Not long until it will be wet with salty goodness.

A few more weeks to go.

Have the new lights now, 8 x 54w T5, can only run 4 bulbs otherwise i am going to cook my morphs :furious: as the current tank isnt deep enough to keep them low enough.

Stand is almost finished, then just drilling the tank for the coast to coast calfo.

Have all the plumbing sorted out for the bean animal siphon setup

Will be good to see how the rest of you build goes mate.

Postby ssbk23 » Sun 28 Aug, 2011 7:12 pm

All up and running now!

Took me a while to fill. I run a hose from my RO/DI unit into the tank and filled it over the course of 3 days. Mixed the salt once it was full and running.
Turned on the lights and the blue actinics started to melt the acrylic covers so I'm getting a replacement and paying the extra to upgrade to 250w halides

Sump has 5 stages. First is the inlet that runs all 3 overflow hoses into a filter sock, that flows under a wall into the skimmer section. Skimmer section overflows into the bio section and has the skimmer outlet running into it too.
Bio section houses a mix of live rock and coral rubble with course foam to quieten down the overflow.
Bio section then runs down under a baffle into the return section which houses heater, return pump and phosban reactor.
5th section isn't set up yet but will be the refugium fed by the chiller I'm purchasing shortly. Refugium will have a sand bed with macro algae. This will overflow into the return section.

Got a black acrylic backing made up on Friday, definitely looks better than before imo.

Tank has around 25kgs of rock in it now. The aquascaping kind of went to plan. Im planning on doing the same on the other side and have a valley in the middle. Possibly with a short mound by itself in the middle.

Let me know what you think! Would love further suggestions with the aquascaping. Let me know if you think it looks good so far

Looking good Shane,

Bring on the cycle, and lets start stocking it up :roflmao:

Have you got an idea on your stock list yet?

Good to see that its wet now, and am sure that it will be no time at all until you end up having the system running with everything nice and stable.

Interesting idea on the sump setup. Not going to run Rowaphos instead of Phosban? After using Phosban, i am going to be switching over to Rowaphos as it doesn't leach back into the tank, and also it shouldn't effect the PH of the tank like Phosban can. Just something i thought i would throw out there.

Thanks mate :)
Started to get a little cycle. I put 9kgs of rock in to start with and got a slight elevation of ammonia that went back to zero in 2 days.
Just put in another 12kgs in so will keep testing and see how it goes
Won't be able to get anymore rock for a few weeks now. Need to buy a chiller pretty quick, the 150w halides heat the water up an extra 1.5deg. Could only imagine what the 250's are going to do.

Only got a small fish list at the moment. Keeping it on the smaller side of stocking

So far I'm thinking a mated pair of peculas, a purple tang, a small school of anthias, a mandarin when the tank is mature.
Would really like a flame angel but might not be a great idea with SPS.

Didn't know about that with Phosban. Will definitely look into rowaphos when the Phosban is exhausted

Cheers :)

Hi Shane,

Can I suggest you move your Ecotech controller - would hate to see water slash onto it and ruin it.

I've also noticed you replaied to a seperate thread on wiers and how you don't run one - will be watching to see what happens when you start feeding the tank as it matures.

Looking good though - they look nice when they are all brand new :-)

Thanks Macca,
Good idea about the controller. Not sure where else to put it at this stage, will have to sit down and think of somewhere else.
Would have been easier with some things if I had of had a backing on the cabinet.

So far so good with the skimming. When I added the live rock and then moved it all again I had a lot of crud floating around that got skimmed out rather quickly.

Here is a closer pic of the drains.

Looking good mate,
re the picture of your bean animal, is there a reason you have them at an angle like that, the way I have mine and I'm pretty sure its how its supposed to be is is the full siphon and open channel elbows point down and the emergency points up. The idea being with the emergency pointing up that its like the drain in the bath, if the water level gets that high in the tank then it will dump the water down into the sump really quick.

Also and I don't know if you can do this, if you can reduce the return pump flow so that the amount of water circulating is just a bit more then what is coming out of your skimmer outlet into the bio section. That way almost 100% of the water coming down from the dt is getting skimmed.

Re the flame angel nipping the sps, I haven't had any issues yet, but my lemonpeel has a go at everything.

Re: Shane's 4x2x2 SPS & LPS reef tank *UPDATE with pics!!*

Postby ssbk23 » Fri 02 Sep, 2011 5:22 pm

Cheers mate,
I can't have the elbows any lower as it drops the level in the tank too much. At least this way I'm getting all 3 drains skimming off the surface.

At the moment the DT volume is going through the sump just over 4 times an hour. I always thought the minimum is 3-5?
At this stage I wont be slowing that down.

Cheers about the info re flame angel, looks like I might be able to get one after all

An update:

Not a great deal has really gone on, mainly due to the fact I've been a little short of cash recently which is probably a good thing as the slower I go with it the better.
In desperate need of a chiller which is hopefully only a week or 2 away. With the 250w halides it touches on 29deg by the end of the day.

Bought a Algae free piranha magnet cleaner, very happy with it :)

Bought the Red Sea Foundation A,B & C additives and Salifert Ca, KH, Mg test kits. Having issues getting my levels right with high calcium and low alkalinity. Switched to Rowaphos in the reactor and it seems to lower the KH as well. Slowly bringing up the KH to balance out the calcium its just been a slow battle so far.

I have a couple of Acro's in which are doing well, nice colouration and getting growth already.
What are good things to be feeding them? I was thinking Amino Acids and Reef Roids from 100% reef safe?

Also what are peoples opinions on my skimmer? Keeping in mind that this will be an SPS dominant tank. Will it be adequate or should I be looking at upgrading when I get more stocked? If so any suggestions on what I should get?

Cheers

Out of curiosity mate, what have you made your light stand from? It looks like the aluminium connect-it tubing from Bunnings, but when I tried to hang my aqua medic 4' light from some of that I couldn't get it anywhere near strong enough to feel comfortable with it (I had it set up like two large "L" shapes coming up over the tank and had the inner angle of the "L" reinforced with shelving brackets - if that makes sense lol). Damned heavy lights they are :)

Looking good so far

The light stand I designed myself and was built by the fabricator at my work.
It consists of 50x25mm box section steel with sections screwed into the bottom and top bracing of the cabinet.
There isn't any movement in the bracket with the weight of the light unit

You're right there is alot of weight in these units!

Yeah.... nice little dent in the quarter panel of my car from when I first tested my connect-it frame haha -- caught the light, but the frame kept going :P

Cheers for the info - really need to find myself someone local with a bit of welding skills to put something together for me :)

I've been pretty slack with my tank journal, mainly because I haven't got a decent camera to take pics.
I've changed the system completely from the drains, sump layout and equipment

I've got an internal weir/overflow running a full syphon bean animal system. It's been a major improvement. Better surface skimming, dead silent and peace of mind knowing my tank isn't going to overflow.

Lighting I've changed to Ecotech radions and I'm getting really good results from them.

Sump I've cut out 2 sections to house a bigger skimmer. Waiting on a Vertex Alpha 200 to finish it off :)

I'll get some pics up soon even if they are just crappy iPhone ones.
