Postby fishguy23 » Sun 06 Feb, 2011 9:26 pm

Introduction:
upgrade from the below
Old Tank journal can be found here Travis's nano cuboid

System Objectives: healthy tank i hope :crossfingers:

System Type: Mixed reef.

Display System:

Strike up Date: plans started towards the end of last year as I had run out of room in my current tank. Sent of a few designs to a tank builder but another tank popped up that was too good to pass up. Its almost to the specs I was going to get built just a little shallower, but for the price I was willing to make a few centimetres of sacrifices.

Display Tank: 3 x 2 x little over a foot tall rimless with bevelled edges with a hood

Display Lighting: itzmatty 120watt led (bsled)

Stand: pine but will skin it in something.
Hood: it has one so my wrasse don’t jump

Sump: 3 foot 3 chamber.

Refugium: centre section of sump

Refugium Lighting: 10 watt led

Support systems:

System Water: Natural salt water

Display Water circulation: vortech mp10 es, two tunze 6045

Return Pump: aquabee up 3000

Skimmer: ms red devil version

Evaporation Top Up:Auto topup

Chemical Support:

Calcium Addition:
Alkilinity Addition:
Other Chemical Maintenance:

Current Water Chemistry: this is the tanks im upgrading.
Nitrates: 0 api
Phosphates: .03 hanna
Alkalinity: 8 red sea
Calcium: 440 api
Salinity / Specific Gravity: 1.025
Magnesuim: never tested

Image

Fish list-
2 black and white captive bred clowns (Amphiprion ocellaris ) Ted and ?.... save the wild ones where we can
1 lawnmower blenny (Salarias fasciatus) Victa
and with some luck a trio of Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenter) which I will be getting 100% reef safe to source. These will be the feature fish of the tank.

:) well, progress has happend a lot quicker than i thought it would thanks to the rain.
gave the tank a good clean getting all the algae and calcium residue along the water line off.
i scraped all the old paint off the back and resprayed it black again.
have started the plumbing.
about to go out and get the rest of the plumbing needed and some black acrylic to cover the weir.
once that's taken care of i will be taking the stand to my grandfathers so i can pretty it up.. just a plain stained pine stand at the moment.

Pictures you say!
shot this one in the wrong format so had to download a converter not the full version hence the watermark.

and the shot with the bottle of booze that everyone has

the bottom of the tank is painted black as it was bare bottom, i have no interest in fixing this as i will be having substrate
so the weir still needs covering, the acrylic guy said it will be ready by 3 so will finish that up this afternoon.
for the overflows since there were three bulkheads i wanted to have syphon, durso, backup.... managed to work that in the small amount of space i had.

it would look better hood-less but when i have my planned fish list a rimless tank really isnt an option without the hood

well i shall be hanging the light high enough to give some good spread on the tank. which is why i got a 120 over 90 watt

Hey Travis,

looking awesome mate! shame to see your cube shut down though, was a keen follower of it. But this setup is looking really promising, will be following it with lots of interest.

not shut down yet, will still be running for about a month. will do an update before i transfer everything across.
i like the cube a lot its just limiting with the amount of floorspace, this tank only adds about 50l to the volume but gives me a load more space

Thanks, it does help when the weather keeps you away from work.
Came home early today because i had done all the needed work, so got another coat of paint on the stand.... one more to go then its done.
Well at least until i get around to putting cladding or something on it.

I have used a acrylic latex paint so its water proof.

not this one, it just raises the room temp too much when the chiller runs, ideally me and mum are trying to convince dad to let us plumb it through the wall.

HI great looking tank, I love what you have done at the back to allow air in and out,....is that roof leaf stuff you have used for the weir and the back ? I have some and thinking of using it myself for new tank, just wondering how you find it.

yer i used gutter guard for the weir and to stop the wrasse jumping over the rim of the tank. it seems to work well the only issue i have is when attached to the weir it kinda works like an algae turf scrubber, makes it hard to clean. i made the new one on this tank removable so i can clean it properly.
