Re: Petes Aquarium Mini Update

Postby petes-aquarium » Tue 21 Sep, 2010 7:22 pm

Todays update.

Just ordered a PSI-020B-DI-LW RO/DI unit from PSIFILTERS after talking to Peter on the phone, this seems to be the best option, at a later date I may purchase a solenoid and a float switch. This is all new to me so should be interesting to connect up when it arrives. Another toy to play with... :roflmao:

I will be changing the hood slightly after having a look; it kind of spoils the point of having a rimless tank. So will look into changing it so it is floating somehow.

Something like this maybe.
Image

On another note hopefully my sump will be ready this week, got two days of this week so crosses fingers that it is. If so It will be set up for it's test run with fresh water.

Thanks for looking,
Peter.

From Dennison at Mary Annes Aquarium, I did have a classic 500 but this just came in and looks allot better. Haven’t really seen any reviews of it as of yet.

Received the sump on Friday and have been playing around with the plumbing all weekend, I still have to get some bits to finish it off tomorrow. Here are some pics so far of the system, it is slowly getting there and can't wait..... :)

This is the tank so far, still have to hang the lights from the ceiling. They are just sitting on the lip atm, luckily they don't way too much.
Image

The weir so far I have cut down the emergency as it is too high in the pic. Flow is real good and very quiet.
Image

A pic of the sump.
Image

A close-up of the overflow, Ball valve is to be changed to a gate valve tomorrow. The flexible tube is just there to hold it up while testing.

A pic of the chiller plumbed in.

Sump sorted

Postby petes-aquarium » Tue 28 Sep, 2010 10:00 pm

Hey all,

Small update, the plumbing and sump are finally sorted and have stable water levels in the weir finally (no fluctuations) I decided to go with a full syphon feed to keep noise down and an emergency backup. Only problem I am having is that my Laguna 6000 seems to have gotten a rattle kind of sound after 3 days of dead quiet running, not sure what’s caused the rattle. I have tried sponges under it with no luck and running it so it touches nothing but the outlet tube (no glass contact at all).

Plumbing layout with hose water change tap.
Image Image Image

Also got my PSI-020B-DI-LW and plumbed it in, seems to be working very well. my incoming water is around the 120 PPM TDS and outgoing is 0 PPM on RO and around 5 to 10 PPM on RO/DI (is this normal, not sure as never had a filter like this).

RO/DI Plumbing and units current location.

Hi all,

Today’s update , finally got some salt water in the tank thanks to Tommie for delivering my IBC with 1000L NSW... :) Some pics for you all to look at, nothing too exciting as of yet. Will be purchasing first lot of live rock tomorrow (10KG) planning to put 10KG in each week or two until I have about 30 to 40 KG depending on looks.

Filling the tank up.

Level in the weir.
Image

Skimmer going crazy on its first start up, never had one before seems to be working damn good so far. Still need to tune it better and get levels correct.
Image

And last but not least, as it sits on strike up day. Damn it looks boring so far.... :)

Hi all,

Today I bought roughly 18KG's of live rock and put it into the tank, I think the look is pretty good with plenty of room for acros etc.... when the time comes. The look I am going for is 2 bommies one back left side and one front right side, so far the back left one is done. Will get more liverock in a week or so.

This is what I came up with.
Image

Also spotted my first thingo, don't know what it is but will find out. Any idea what it is...?

Re: Petes Aquarium Mini (Strike Up Day 01-10-2010)

Postby petes-aquarium » Thu 07 Oct, 2010 9:36 pm

Hi all,

Small update for today on how the tank is moving.

Current water parameters are below. I have started slowly dosing Brightwell Liquid Reef to boost Calcium/Alkalinity as they are on the low side. Ammonia/Nitrite and Nitrate have dropped considerably in the last couple days also and brown algae has started forming on the live rock. The cycle is under way and hopefully in a few days I can add a hermit crab or something small.

PH: 8.2
SG: 1.024
TEMP: 26.2
ALK: 6DKH LOW
CALC: 372mg/L LOW
AMMONIA: 0.05ppm HIGH
NITRITE: 0.1ppm HIGH
NITRATE: 5ppm

Some more hitchhikers that have been seen in the tank. not too sure what the snail is but the Brittle star was pretty cool on the glass and quickly retreated once the lights came on.

Image Image

And also a pick of a button that came on the live rock, really wonder if it is going to survive or not with that much skeleton exposed. Seems to be opening its mouth and does plump up slightly through the night :crossfingers: that it will be OK.

Image

On another note the parts for my second string of 24LED's arrived today, hopefully will have them built this weekend.

Thanks for looking, and sorry for the crap pics currently can't be arsed getting the SLR out. :konk:

Small update, have added my first corals and some snails.

The snails I have added so far are listed below, the strombus is awesome and has done a real good job of cleaning the substrate.
2x Trochus
1x Strombus

Here are some pics.

Yeah Rob, just a wee bit of overkill. All up weighs maybe 15-20KG's. And clumping the hammers together makes PE huge.

Matt I saw your new tank render at Marry Annes the other day as well, should be great when up and running.

On another note my Leopard wrasse just went belly up, wouldn't have a clue why. Was eating and swimming well yesterday, and no marks on his body. Hate when I don't know why things die. Only thing I did was give the tank a 25% water change like I have done a few times now.
