Dorz' 3' Reef - Modifying stuff! NEW PHOTOS 1/12!

Postby dorz » Wed 11 Aug, 2010 4:16 pm

Hey everyone,

i am picking another aquarium over the weekend, this will become my first marine reef setup, as ive already found it has quite a large learning curve compared to freshwater ;)

System Objectives: I want to have a tank which has a nice amount of coral and fish in it, good colour, and to be stable enough for me to go away for a week at a time without needing to maintain it..

Tank Setup:

System Type: Mixed Reef

Strike up Date: a while ago ;)

Display Tank: 3x1.5x1.7 with custom centre weir inc durso / bulkheads - now covered in black acrylic and combs, with the background painted black - thanks marine + :)

Display Lighting: : WAS: 120w BSLED LED panel with 63W:56B ratio, NOW: Inwatter Stingray 4' LED unit!

Stand: aquaone stand, modified to fit sump

Hood: no hood, aluminium connect-it to sit LED lights on top

Sump: 2.5ft sump with skimmer compartment/dsb compartment/fuge / combs before return

Refugium: DSB , LR & macro

Refugium Lighting: bunnings cheapie light

Support systems:

System Water: Natural salt water

Display Water circulation: 1x 5000Lph Hydor K copy (JVP) modified to decrease flow, 1x tunze 6045

Return Pump: AquaBee 3000

Skimmer: Bubble Magus NAC7

Evaporation Top Up:
Guppies twin float ATO unit, which failed, so now manual :p

RO/DI: PSI Filters PSI-020-DI-LW

will post up latest FTS after ive cleaned the glass ;)

Hey Dorz,

Thought I had better check out the new thread. Guess I should do the same soon. Yeh get some pics up of the new tank when you get it.

How are you planning in getting the NSW home? Lots of buckets. I'm a ways off from the beach so still trying to way up my options. I'm also wondering that someone in Adelaide might do a delivery service or something.

You cant drink RO/DI water. Not good for you at all. :dead:

to get the NSW from the beach, i plan to get 4 of those 25L water containers for camping and whatnot, and just go to the beach on a high (incoming) tide and hold them underwater till its full :P that or ill rig up a small pump setup or something. i dont have the biggest car boot space in the world (80s hatchback supra) so i cant just chuck tanks in there :P

if i only keep 100L of NSW at home, and do water changes every 2nd week, i should only have to go to the beach once a month or so... once its all set up and running, i might think about getting another tank for NSW. i might not need to do water changes that regularly, we'll see.

im going to get a 2nd tank just for RO/DI water too, to siphon into a smaller container for topups.

as for photos, these are the only 2 that i have. its a fair bit dirtier currently, will pick it up on friday / sat and get cleaning.

cheers!

(note, i wouldnt mind getting smoked glass put in for the weir, and painting / laminating the back black, to offset the substrate and make the colours 'pop' more..

also, i know it doesnt belong here (lol) but im setting up another freshwater tank at roughly the same time.. picked it up for a 6pack, modified the stand somewhat, fresh lick of paint, new hinges and handles and voila:

though that will only have a few plants, some angels, current tetras, algae eaters and mollys... for now ;)

Just finished making a couple of orders!

one from guppys with t5 tubes/caps/ballasts for the freshwater, and 2 5000Lph powerheads and a refractometer for the marine :)

and another from Peter at PSI Filters... well you can guess what that is!

its the PSI-020-di-lw with the dual digital TDS meter, a tap attachment, and the switching valve to run pure RO water instead of RO/DI, for drinking :D (should be better than the puratap my partner carries on about ;) )

picked up my tank today :) needs a good cleanout, then will be going to a shop to get the weir / overflow box replaced with a black one... just for looks, of course.

i have some water based gloss black paint at home from painting the other cabinet, would this be suitable for painting the glass with? or would it come up too glossy?

i also cant believe how freaking huge the sump is, those photos do not do it justice. its 2.5ft wide, and you cannot take the sump out without emptying it, taking the doors off the cabinet, taking the tank off, front crossmember out, and even then you have to lift it above the lower hinges of the doors for it to come out... redonkulous!

Not sure the water based paint will stick with salt creep and humidity.

Which goodies are you expecting to arrive? Gotta love postie Christmas.

pile of goodies arrived! :D

they include:
2x 5000Lph powerheads
refractometer
thermometer
lighting ballasts, endcaps and tubes for freshwater (now all set up!)

and my biggest purchase so far (besides the tank setup), a PSI-020-DI-LW from Peter with a tap to change from ro only to rodi, and a dual tds meter.

ive had an issue with the filter already! murphys law and me not checking fittings means a hose sprayed everywhere when it was first run. after running it for about an hour the output was still around 100tds (RO only). i gave Peter a call, did some tests and he sent me out a new reverse osmosis cartridge, express post, which i received the next day! swapped them over and TDS from RO only is down to about 12 :) very happy with the service from PSI Filters / BOSS :) Thankyou Peter!

Ive been looking at the sicce 4000 pump and from all the reviews i have read they seam like a good pump. only place i have found in oz that stocks them is 'the reef shop' they are the oem for the tunze master series pumps.

return pump i bought was an aquabee 3000 :D was suprised to see that the shop i bought it from (LFS), was only about $20 more than online, and that would have been taken up with postage anyway. ended up being about $180, and i have local warranty too :)

in the photo with the skimmer, i assume that hole in the top is to put a hose, to store the skimmate somewhere else, ie tube to a bottle or something?

my bulkheads are 20mm and 28mm, (return and durso), it doesnt have a full on seperate emergency siphon. slightly worried about crud blocking the durso, and having the tank overflow... though im not sure if the pump would run dry before the water runs out in the sump.. depends how much water is there i guess?

also with the durso, am i right in saying i will need a restrictor to take it down to 1"? or would it just be better to use 28mm piping and put a valve / ball tap in there?

the tubing that fits over the pump is either 16mm ID or 19mm, i cant remember. am i going to be alright upsizing this to the 20mm bulkhead and piping?

got some fittings, turns out my bulkhead for the return is 20mm and durso is 25mm... got some ball valves and some 45 deg bends. also got some 76L coke bottle things for water storage :)

hopefully the flex hosing ive got is able to stretchhh over some 25mm piping :P will need to boil it, not sure how long thought :o

coke drums cleaned with vinegar and water, now filled to soak with tap water to hopefully clean them further... see what leeches out of the plastic.

return line all plumbed up, wasnt hard. only issue now is the valve for the durso doesnt fit where i wanted it, so its off to the hardware store to get more plumbing bits :) i swear itll be wet soon!

just need to get my substrate nice and clean, then i can start with a freshwater leak test and pump test. is it better to use RO or RODI for this rather than plain tapwater? or doesnt it matter....

finished the plumbing side of it (i think!)

filled the sump with tap water, then went SCREW IT and dumped my substrate in, and the DSB. my dsb is only 12cm deep, but is fairly big across, is this okay?

i think the first batch ill mix up with some dupla or something because i cant be bothered going to the beach tomorrow, and its been raining a lot. RODI water + dupla sound okay?

does it matter if there is a little bit of tap water still left in the sump? its between baffles and i cant get it out.

cheers!

Postby dorz » Mon 30 Aug, 2010 1:58 am

been filled with water for a couple of days now. im having a lot of trouble tuning in the durso to be completely silent. the sounds im trying to get rid of are:

- water rushing into overflow box too quickly, like a waterfall
- gurgling noise coming out of the airtube in the top of the durso
- bubbles in the sump end making a lot of noise
- trying to cope with roughly 2000L of flow down the durso...

aquabee is a 3000Lph, with roughly 1.1m of head that gives me around 2000Lph of flow that im working with.

anyone know how i should try to manage that with the durso? id like to avoid messing around too much with the overflow at the moment, the durso is fully glued by previous owner or shop.... will be a pain to take it out without taking the entire overflow box off... unless i cut it up with the dremel, and id like to avoid plastic shards and power tools in the tank ;) i dont really want to drain it.

haha, those bikes are fun, but nothing compared to the other ones on the trailer ;)

after getting pipe cleaner and plumbing glue all over my hands, ive had enough fun for tonight. im redoing the overflow box, for the 2nd (or 3rd?) time. it was too noisy, faaaar too noisy.

i have so far done:

- taken all piping out.

- made a 15mm pvc 'frame' of tubing, which runs up the back of the tank, splits from 1x15mm to 2x15mm pvc pipes, elbows itself over the edges and into the water. looks pretty smooth, im happy with it.doesnt leak either! - pics soon.

the only thing that is bothering me, is the overflow piping. i want to do a durso / syphon style (a bit like a herbie one i guess?) overflow box, but ive noticed the 2 holes in the base of the overflow are meant to take a 15mm and a 25mm bulkhead...

im worried the 15mm might not be able to take the flow from the pump? and the durso will be used more often? instead of just as an emergency..

the holes drilled in the glass are:

28.6mm
38.9mm

as per the reefpedia,

# 20mm/0.75" - 26mm thread OD = 30-32mm hole
# 25mm/1" - 34mm thread OD = 36-38mm hole

can i get away with slotting a 20mm one in the smaller hole, and siliconing around it to make sure it wont leak? or is that not recommended?

Sounds like you are making progress. Cant help with the overflow question though. I am going to make all of my outlets 25mm bulkheads just to make sure.
I think you might struggle to get a good seal with putting a smaller unit in there as you wouldnt get as much surface area to help seal. BUT!! nothing ventured nothing gained.

yeah, im kinda worried about the seal. not sure whether its better to put a ring of silicone around it, or to use silicone grease..

okay, so to sort out the 'my bulkhead flange is too big for my weir' issue, the bench grinder made short work of that.

all sanded down, it fit in, and with a (very) generous lathering of silicon, the bulkheads were installed. after i finished work, i installed the rest of the piping.

as it stands, the tank has a 20mm and a 25mm bulkhead, for siphon and emergency / backup. the return is 15mm pvc (roughly the same as 19mm nylon tubing) up the back of the tank.

i am not sure what to do with the emergency, i want to have a little bit (say 5%) flow down it to regulate the water level, but i dont have enough height between the top of the weir and the brace to install a full durso. anyone have any ideas? want it SILENT when flowing a small amount. i can currently hear the trickle sound, so yeah.

also, my skimmer is wayyyyy too noisy. its a reef octopus classic 500 (nw-110 or something). i will be making one of those 'silencers' for the air pipe tomorrow.

is anyone able to guide me on how to tune this one? ive noticed if i restrict the airflow a little bit, the bubbles get smaller. the top section doesnt seem to make a good seal on the cone shaped piece...

anyway, enough rambling,

PICS!
