New pics of 6x2x2 Reef Tank

Postby Morgazmo » Mon 24 May, 2010 7:02 pm

Hey all,

Started a new tank journal with this post since it has seen some massive changes recently. Traded in most of my agressive fish and have tried to focus more on corals and coral friendly fish. Hmmm... Note the word "tried"!
Anyhow here's the pics and a bit of a write-up, anyone with quality hints and tips are much appreciated. Enjoy,

Image
Just a full frontal of the setup, still a bit of a work in progress (gotta finish cladding the stand!).. Sump has the skimmer, a passive dsb, the refuge, a wet/dry area and then the return area (naughty zone).

Image
Bit of a close up of the LHS of the tank. Purple and green sponges, gorgonians, a new cataphylia, the bubble coral and some star polyps

Image
And the RHS.. the leather coral and behind it a big bubble tip anemone, the duncan coral and then the sarcophyton.. Duncan and sarcophyton taking some time to adjust fully.

Image
The Kole and Purple Tang

Image
Purple bi-valve sponge

Image
Some zoos that just sprung up and are doing quite well..

Image
The leather coral and the bubble tip hiding behing it..

And the sarcophyton, with the Lionfish hanging out nearby..

Water parameters have been steady, although my dKH has spiked since I turned my calcium reactor on after a lazy month waiting on a co2 refill.
PH has steady around 8.2-8.3 (even with dKH as low as 7)
Temp varies between 26-27 in tank depending on ambient temp
SG around 1.023
dKH was 7-10 for last month or two, but spiked to 17 after calcium reactor kicked in, dosing small amounts of white vinegar to avoid upsetting the balance
Calcium between 440 and 500
Phosphates around 0.25, never had a 0 reading, but hasn't caused any problems
Ammonia 0
Nitrates sometimes up to 5ppm, but mostly 0's
Magnesium has been supplemented gradually up from 1100 to 1440 in the last month or two, go the epsom salts!

Calciun reactor runs at 6.5 with just more than a steady flow of drops and Kalkwasser has been manual top up at around 12 litres every other day.. sometimes more.
Water changes have been minimal, have done a few, but instead have been adding Trace Elements, Coral food, strontium and iodine (neither of which i test for - follow directions and pray :) )

Fish Stock
1 Purple Tang - the boss
1 Kole Tang - was a bully when purple came along... now definately the sidekick
1 Juvenile Blue Faced Angel - much less dominant since the tangs came on the scene
2 Ocellaris Clowns - haven't hosted any of the corals in about a week or two, but give them time
1 Royal Dottyback - never see it
1 Spotted Dwarf Hawkfish - pretty cool to watch - personality, but getting darker and probably making the [censored] list
1 Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish - also sorta cool, very timid, haven't lost any fish to him, but maybe [censored] list
1 Eclipse Coral Hogfish - [censored] list for sure
1 BiColor Parrotfish - maybe shitted soon
1 BiColor Blennie - ok with corals so far, we'll see with time
1 Valentino Puffer - sort of cute, ok with corals but pretty much [censored] list for sure

Few Strom and Trochus snails - There's a poor decorator crab confined in the sump where he can't destroy everything,
Theres a green brittlestar fish, and a 5 and a 6 legged red starfish.
I think I've hit it all on the head there.. Oww head hurts. Some of these fish are gonna have to go, they're not really doing it for me anymore. Also buying up some nice corals when and where I find them, though I'm trying to do some research first where possible.

Maybe I should mention that I have 4 white and 4 blue T5s, a 150w metal halide over the refuge, a NC66 skimmer or something. 2 x 12000l/ph re-circ pumps, a 7000l return pump and a 2000l pump for the 1/6 Hp chiller and the calcium reactor. Anything I missed, lemme know. Top up is only treated tap water mainly through Kalkwasser drip. Tank has been running since september last year with about 100kg of live rock and started of predatory and now, we'll see for yourself. Thanks for reading, See ya!

P.S. I'll post some links to some videos too in case anyone is interested, should be sometime tonight with any luck :)

Here's a crappy phone version film clip. My flatmate has a full hd camera that he took some footage with and when he gets around to it, you'll see it.
Here's mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHJ-NzppbKI

Yeah, the Duncan is not that new. Its getting on to a month old, it wasn't very open when I bought it but I'm target feeding it and it seems to be opening up more and more.. still, so far a little disappointing..
Sponges are great for some variety, opens and shuts when things swim around it too, nice touch. Cheers,
