Ollies 1500 x 1200 x 600 starfire tank.... TOTF September

Postby millotoli » Thu 08 May, 2014 8:52 pm

Introduction:
I'm joining the big boys :pirate:
I have been forced into building a new tank when i smashed mine moving house!
It is a bit bitter sweet as i loved my tank, I didn't think there would be any others in my life. she was always there for me, always giving me pleasure...but then how can you say no to an upgrade when the opportunity arises? younger and bigger
So looking at the space we have and always loving the look of 4 by 4 tanks i have seen, but also not wanting to compromise the 5 ft length we had, my new baby was created

My old journal, viewtopic.php?f=148&t=252334 :furious:

I am looking forward to getting this tank stable!, I really want to see my fish and corals go from small frags to colonies that i can spread around the country
The look i am after... I am going for a simplistic scape, Something to try and keep the proportions, I prefer smaller fish and schools over large tangs and angels. having said that i would love an angel tank..... :nono:
I believe if you are going to give up hope on buying a house due to ALL the cash you get going into your tank you may as well go all out and get the good gear..
BUT using gear that has a reputation of being worth the money spent.

Tagging along here.

I originally was gonna go 4x4, but it was just too much for me.

5x4 is one huge tank, can't wait to see this come together. This depth is gonna look incredible at 5 ft long :o

Just make sure you can get it into the house!

Keep on reefing!!

Cheers boys,

I am hoping it will be fun to scape, There are two looks i like, a sort of heavy rock U shape scape or the minimal bommie scape, but look amazing, here is one example http://www.triton.de/english/gallery/shop/index.html

I am also looking forward to getting a few different schools of fish in there to give it that more natural look.

Cav I love the height of your stand and i am torn between a 450, 600 or a 900 high stand, what is yours?., I am using the space under the stair well for the sump area so it wont be an issue if it is low. i want to do something a bit different with the stand, Looking at different materials, two toned cedar, alucobond, aluminum cladding, stone work etc. I am thinking about adding some niches and spot lighting...

I am also considering getting a speedy pump and a RE double cone skimmer, might as well go all out
I got a quote for 2 of 8 by 54w hybrids... :o that was a bit of a shock, I think i might just add two led lights to my PM

My stand is 500mm high. Perfect hight when sitting on the couch and easy to work on. I can reach any part of the tank without a chair. My favourite part of having a low stand is the top down view !

If you don't need the space, I think it looks great. But make it easy to work on. If you don't have heaps of space under your stairs, don't go low. You can never have enough space to work on your tank.
Keep on reefing!!

Postby millotoli » Sun 11 May, 2014 11:03 pm

Thanks for the response.

I really am torn between low and high, both look good, my wife wants to leave the frame exposed as well. :wall: as i write this i think i would like to be able to use the space under the stand.

There are a few more things i am struggling with. I can't work what i want to do for lighting, option 1. I could get another 10 globe ATI and angle them both in or option 2. SELL! I have had a quote on two 6 by 54 w ATI PM. That wasn't too bad, then i can run a nice led light down the middle. this should save about $3000 from getting two hybrids. (although i would love them)

MONEY!!!! i hate it

I will probably run a second tank as a stand alone fuge, to do this do i run the feed off my return line into the fuge then an overflow back into the sump? or should i have a direct feed from the tank and return back?

Cheers

I made a commitment to my lighting return pump and skimmer today.
I have ordered two 8 tube 54w PM
I am luckily apart of Auabellas skimmer deal and the group buy Matt is organising
So a double cone 250 and a rd speedy 702 pump.
(cheers Nick, Matt, and Ricky (m+).)
I am thinking i might run a vertex ... somtheing down the middle for moon lighting and sunrise etc.
My wife has given up, as long as i don't tell her figures she is ok... but I am not allowed any more kit.

I have a fu Manchu lion fish in qt and dint think it was a good idea to put them in, a
Still don't understand WHY they died though
And to top it off I had already ordered the black caps
And they are in the tank, now I am really freaking out, I don't want to loose any more fish!

So after a sad couple of days I ended up loosing both the black caps and angels. It made reconsider everything.....
na.
But it did make me want to do EVERYTHING by the books.

So the lesson i learned. Quarantining fish IS necessary, even if it is just to monitor the fish for a few days. The stress of not being able to see the black caps for 3 days was horrible. then you would spot it amongst the rocks and assume it was fine. ONLY to see it floating the next day and riddled in white spot :wall: . I have decided the other black cap is dead as he looked terrible and i haven't seen him. IF i had put them in the QT i HAVE!!! :furious: I could have monitored and treated. I have never had issues with fish dieing so have always been impartial to the QT process. I have always had one but not always used it.

I will never be called the fool who had to be shown twice.

Sad news about the Black Caps Ollie.
I have never ran a QT before but decided I would this time around.
Can't say I ever lost any fish to disease before only to carpet surfing.Just this time I intend keeping a few harder to keep fish so thought I better set up a QT.
How long till the new tank arrives?

Cheers

So I am thinking i am going to run a bit of a hybrid flow system.
I have 3 tunze P/H on a controller, but i don't want directional flow, and there for i don't want them all on the back wall.
But equally i don't want power heads anywhere else in the tank. SO.
I am thinking i will run a closed loop system for the "front" of the tank and the tunze at the back.
I am open to ANY feedback about this?
here is my attempt of a visual
Image

(i dont even know how to take a screen shot... :roflmao: )

I will look into how many pumps i will have to run,
maybe 2 and then i can alternate them.
The pic isnt the positions or number of outlets i am planning, just a reference point.
