Phils 6x2x2 slice of beauty

Postby florix » Mon 10 Mar, 2014 1:09 am

Hey everybody I have been out of action for over 2 years now. I have decided I miss my reef and want to start again.

System Objectives: Create my own slice of beauty for the family to admire
System Type: Split reef with SPS and LPS creating a "passage" through the reef.

Strike up Date: :poke:
Ok so right now I am still planning the tank and rather then clog up the forum with millions of posts I thought I would just start ranting away here.

Display Tank: 6x2x2 Starphire -Dennison
I have several local tank builders stating to me that what I want they cant/wont build so I need to look more abroad. country towns have their advantages too :pirate:
Anybody know a decent tank builder thats near the northern rivers area? Might even ring denison

Display lighting: Malibu S400 x2

Display Water circulation:
I dont want equipment in the display so I am going for a closed loop. I have purchased two iwaki pumps ( MX70 and MD50)from Tone  and I will be setting up a gyre system.
Thus creating a flow hopefully like this

Sump: 1000x550x500
Below I would like to explore into the realm of fragging and make my top up a little easier so i added them into the sump. I am thinking of having black perspex around the frag section and the back to stop the frag light from creating havoc through the sump and also for looks. Need a frag light so maybe a Double ELEMENT 30cm 18W

Skimmer: I have picked up a Skimz SM251

System Water: NSW where possible or premium ASW

Return Pump:

Chiller:

Evaporation Top Up:
RO/DI - Guppies ATO

Dont put an eductor on the eheim, it isnt designed for it.

Skimmer section in diagram above is not a practical shape or size for a realistically rated skimmer

The ato reservoir is way too small.

Ask yourself is the skimmer going on the close side and going to be in the way of acceess to the frag tank, or is the frag tank going to be in the way of getting to the skimmer for maintenance.

Thanks for the advise. What sort of pumps are designed for the flow accelerators?
Yeah I was a little worried about this myself. How would you suggest I resolve the issue?

You need pressure pumps like the Iwaki/Panworlds that are designed for large back pressure, the eheim will just get noisy and cavitate

You have a tank 1800 long, the sump is only 1000 of that - whats going in the empty bit?

Dosing gear, bio pellet stuff, CL pumps and a seperate power station (away from water). Maybe a chiller (try not to have one) house is insulated and I am trying to minimize heat into the tank.

As per my reply in the other thread, you need to decide your flow style. Gyre or turbulent.

If going for turbulent, then don't waste your time with CL.

If gyre, then start planning your tank layout around having circular movement ;)

Check the early stages of my TJ for some ideas on planning and extra links explaining more about gyre flow and it's benefits ;)

Thanks for the link Greg. I had a bit of a read through it and change the layout of my CL a little bit to go for a gyre type system. I want it to run around the tank as there will be two main reefs instead of just one. Also I want to create a bit of depth by having a pass though the centre.

Can you tell me if this flow pattern would work as you are more experienced then me.

That latest design is much better imo than the first one. I would still be aiming to have the outlets facing further out to the side of the tank to try and push the main force of the water flow around the outside of your rocks.. Ie point the front b2 outlet onto the front glass pane more. This will aid with flow around the back of the rock, in a more complete circle and prevent dead spots or loss of the gyre effect.

Also, when you come down to planning drilling the holes in your overflow for the bean animal your holes will need to be much further from the edge of the glass. Your holes need to be 1.5 times the diameter of the hole away from the glass's edge. This will push your overflow out further into the tank thank you may realise, especially after you factor in the bulkheads lip diameter.

I know I have a bit of a dead spot to the left of the tank but it also houses the inlet pipes for the CLs and will also allow me to place something which doesn't like a lot of flow. I just want to hide the plumbing as much as possible.

I understand about the overflow. I also need to push them out so it will have support behind the plumbing. I will probably have to go a metal frame cabinet.

Just remember, you have to design everything around maintaining the velocity and the induced momentum to keep the gyre. You lose that momentum you might as well have a prop pump system. So anywhere that main circle of flow is broken by hitting rocks etc is a place to watch out for cause that is where you'll lose the gyre ;)

Ok so I have changed the sump design to something a little different.

Do you think the flow through will work? I might place a WM in the frag section which goes opposite to water flow and only run it part time.

The main reason for the flow is so that most of the water is pumped into the skimmer and then passed onto the frag section.

Ok so I have contacted a few people around my area about making the tank, one is taking months to respond and even stated, "cant do coast to coast and starphire is REALLY expensive. " So I made contact with Dennnison and even with shipping he is looking a better option. I have attempted to improve my CL and increase the size of the overflow/weir at the same time.

Looking forward to seeing this develop. I am also in the process of planning a new tank and getting Dennison to build it. So many happy customers can't be wrong. :)

Small update of equipment ( tank is still being built). Mainly for my reference of items purchased am I posting (got a few freebies too.) Small light is for the frag section and the pump is for water changes. I have a Laguna for the return coming and iwaki for the CL in boxes. The heater is 500W with a controller but going to get another thermometer as backup and a Salinity and PH digital controller too. Plus a few kg of base rock and some CaribSea Florida Crushed Coral and a Vertex Titanium Grounding Probe plus a PSI water filter (PSI-020B-DI-GM ) is in the way

Phil,I have to ask why is the ATO Reservoir way too small.
It's 45 liters which seems ample to me.On my last tank I used a 20 liter container which worked fine for me.

Who did you end up getting to make your tank? Looks really similar to the tank we just set up, but a bit more complexity in your sump. Can't wait to see it set up

Thanks peoples. The tank was made by Dennison, which I might add made two sumps and also drove the tank some to my house for me. Its made from starphire 12mm glass and 13.5mm base. euro braced and the sump also has the middle (frag) section blacked out so no stray light wanders into the other sections. Very neat job and very nice fella. If anybody is keen for a pre made sump he may still have it haha its exactly the same except wider.

I have just purchased all of the plumbing, 99.9% sure. Millions of elbows and 45s and Ts and ball valves and joiners and 12 meters of pipe but something tells me I will need more haha.

Postby florix » Sat 01 Nov, 2014 11:03 pm

OK so I have been a little lazy and havent posted much in a while but I have recently got my but into gear and took some (poor quality) shots of some things. Tanks up and running well and using a few goodies from the zeo range along with my biopellets. One disaster happened the other day though where my closed loop decided to leak and then crack, most freaking stressful event ever, any way I had to cut out a section and re do it.

Anyway so far my inhibs consist of;
Blonde Naso
Yellow Tang
6 lyretail anthias
Victa lawnmower
A black and white anemonefish Got him for free --- how do i tell which type it is btw
3 Strombus snails and a couple of trochus

I am stoked at one thing though. No chiller and my tank sits at a 25.5-27.1. The house is insulated well and I run the aircon on the hot days from 8am to 5pm which usually knocks it on the head. I figured it would be cheaper to do that then run a chiller.
