Introduction:

Well i have had my ups and downs. majority downs with my previous tank, but from that i only look at the positives and the learnings from it. Living in Karratha i have Australian Coral Farms 10 minutes away and have got to befriend Wayne and his staff who are a great help.

I also have a 7 metre boat and do alot of fishing and diving around our magnificant archipelago.

I have grown up on and under water and to be finally able to afford a reef in my house is a great adventure. I am just looking forward to a tank that i am not worrying about it leaking...

System Objectives: To produce a stunning view of underwater life, seen as if you were diving yourself. To have the system maintain itself enough for me to go on holidays and have no dramas but feeding the system. I want the aquascape to very spacious as if it was the endge of a reef meet sand.

System Type
: Mixed Reef

Display System:

Strike up Date: Building stage

Display Tank: 2.4 x 3 x 2 12mm built by Vebas

Display Lighting: Still undecided, more then likely 4 x Ecotech radion

Stand: Galv steel frame, with custom "Curtain" for ease of access. 1.1m High

Hood: Hoodless, although a full length light hanger which can "swing" off the tank.

Sump: Deep sand bed plus refuge also internal skimmer compartment .

Refugium: In Sump

Refugium Lighting: T5

Support systems:

System Water: Still deciding, more thgen likely NSW collected in my boat hull !!

Display Water circulation:Currently 1 x MP60 + Tunze USB Controller and 2 6105's. (for a start)

Return Pump: Still deciding would like an adjustable, will be good quality.

Skimmer: Reef Octopus Super 5000 external (using in sump as internal) Ehieim compact feed pump

Evaporation Top Up: Currently have RO unit but not installed.

Runing Seneye Reef+ syestem

Chemical Support:

Nice wazza, If your going for a refugium for a tank that big you will need to provide a big refugium to have an effect on the system

Have really been struggling with lighting choices obviously going the larger tank has upped the value on lighting.

Was thinking:

2 x Inwatter 4 foots approx ($3000)

4 x Ecotech Radion approx ($3200)

Toyed with the idea of the Vertex Illuinex (the cheaper version of the Illimuna) but i dont know about them, are they controlable etc.

Really stuck on this my budegte is now 3k give or takeand im straying to the Ecotechs Radions.....

Haha yes well i have a tendency not to do things in half's, I am really looking forward to aquascaping and making it quite a "Bare" tank. 3 individual bombie setup with some nice and white sand.

I started off buy wanting 6 foot setup as i was too scared to go big as i have had several problems with my last second hand tank. The more i talked to Pacco the more confident i felt so i decided to go with my dream size.

Going to be expensive in lighting though, oh well its only money....

The ecotechs are able to upgradable over time, I don't know about the inwatters. I like the ecotechs new light, but i don't like the noise of their vortechs :( And thats true what you say, it's only money

I have never heard the noise level of the Vortechs yet i ahve read the banter betweent tunze vs vortech. I have 2 6105's but no controller so i am going to by the Tunze USB controller then i was thinking of buying a MP60 to go along with the lights and if i was happy get a second MP60...

Its a bit of a holden ford thing... But im happy to try both..

But thats the plan this hour, my opinion alters often and my mind changes...

I would listen to an mp60 prior to purchase, even mp40 users complain 60's are loud.

Probably a good point, i am going to visit Vebas in the next few weeks when i am down in perth i shall have a listen then hopefully.

I have to give it to ecotech about having majority of the pump exterior to the tank allthough i like to be able to point my tunze where i please.

Since your tank is so long to tunze provide great long distance turbulence maybe 3 mp40's on the back wall or 2 mp60's as the vortechs provide wide flow and a different form of flow.

It's simple, I've seen both the Tunze and the Vortech, if its in clear sight and don't mind noise get a Vortech MP60 as they are a much neater looking pump ( I have one). If it's out of sight definitely go Tunze. Turn ya TV up to normal volume and you will still hear it but hardly notice it.

Had 36 meters of steel arrive for my stand today.. Have some days off next week to start welding... It's 50 x 50 x 3... Going to be quite heavy but I'll only be lifting it once.

Going to paint and then get a mate who is a trimmer to make me a "curtain" that press studs on for easy of access.

Any tips from people who have diy stands would be appreciated

Hi, I have ordered and changed size to 8x3x2 should be ready mid Jan.

Stand is complete just need to sort out what lights and how to hang them. If I go radions I want to hang from the stand.

As for flow I have got a couple of tunze 6105 and a controller but will prob purchase 1/2 mp60 (to go with the radions)

So I am pretty much in the stageof planning still, I am not in a huge rush as I jumped into my last tank and that was a diaster. Researching this site hours on end is brilliant help.

Will throw some photos of the stand up when I'm home, in Perth for Xmas...

Cheers

Wazza make sure you use a good paint, makes all the difference.

I used two pac Durabuild. Paint for oil rigs out at sea. Expensive but worth it.

I used same steal, I cut it up but got a welder to pressure weld it for me

Hi all, time to start buying some serious gear,

4 x Ecotech Radions

2 x MP60s

Tunze ATO

Also going to be adding a rail that goes over the centre of the tank full length to hold the lights.

I already have a reef octopus super 5000,

Wouldnt mind a suggestiion on a good return pump??

Few photos of how i am going to hang my lights,

Main point is i want to be able to afjust height and also adjust very high and get them out the way for working in the tank.

This gives me more then a metre extra height from running height. More then enough i believe.

Fire away with any suggestions..

Postby radioman » Sun 01 Jan, 2012 8:50 pm

this is looking to turn out to be a great tank.

can I make a sugestion ref the hanging for the radions, they have a largish power supply so might need a bracket or wooden area to locate the power supply for each light unit. They are a great light unit, I have had two over a 4 ft tank for about a month now and the coral is going nuts also next to no heat, so cuts down on the cooling requirement for the tank.
the 60's are a great choise as well especially for a 8fter.

Looking good so far.

Cheers,

how long are the power cords on the radions? i want to run them inside the frame. and all the way down the bottom.

Should i run the radions long ways with the tank or at 90's to the front of the tank, remebering the tank is 3foot wide and i will mainly be running softies on a small 3 bombie aquascape.

4 x radions
