Flippers 6x3x2- video 24-7-11

Postby Flipper » Thu 01 Apr, 2010 9:45 am

Introduction:
We are moving house so naturally the first thing that comes to mind is a bigger tank, I want a DT where it will be more open where the fish have use of alot more water are where its not full of rock and the rocks aren't placed on the back glass. My design is based on Marcs Peninsular tank , which looks very impressive..

System Objectives:
My original thoughts is to have 3 bommies but I still would like some connection between the three. This would be used to house my zoas and hammers.

System Type:
I dont want to go completely SPS as I like the look of a mixed reef, which again is a bit more natural. I also like my fish and would like a few schools.

Strike up Date:
17/10/10

Display Tank:
The DT will be ,as said previously, a Peninsular style 5.5x3.5.2 (still unsure on the 2' high, maybe 27"). I will be using the calfo overflow system. I am currently looking at having a gradient vinyl background in blue. Going from a darkish blue 2/3 of the way up the gradient to a lighter greyish blue.

Display Lighting:
I currently have Ecolamps LED lights and plan to expand on these. I will use to twin T5s along the side just to light up what the LEDs miss

Stand:
The stand will be made out of timber and cladding in white 2pac removable panels for easy access
I would like to thank Shannonpayne86 for drawing the plans up for me.

Hood:
Basically made the same way as the stand with an open top. I have made it out of the click aluminium. It will be in 3 sections the 2 outer sections will be hinged to the main section allowing me to fold up the T5s ontop of the middle section to allow easier access to the tank.

Sump: Sump specs if applicable.
The sump will be 4'x18"x2' and is a simple 4 section setup. It will have a refugium but not sure if I will go DSB as I will eventually be using Bio pellets. Skimmer will be external (RO 1500) and an internal one (RO Vortex800) to use when my stock gets quite heavy

System Water:
Natural salt water

Display Water circulation:
Starting off with 3 mp40wes then gauge how much extra is needed

Return Pump:
Changed from the panworld to a Laguna 7500

Skimmer:
I have a RO (ooohh, that brand makes me shiver every time I write it) Hurricane 1500 external and RO Vortex 800

Evaporation Top Up:
Auto topup using Reef Keeper controller by Digital Aquatics..great piece of gear

Chemical Support:
I will be running 2 phosban reactors. One with Biopellets and the other with AC

Calcium Addition: Dosing using dosing pumps
Alkilinity Addition: Dosing using dosing pumps

Other Chemical Maintenance: Magnesium etc

Images:
So here are some drawings so far , again thanks to Shannon.
I did the calfo drawing with alot , and i mean alot of help from Scooby. So any comments would be appreciated

is it going to be viewable from 3 sides?
this looks like it is going to be great, really like the stand design. if you go ahead with the white tupac panels i would get someone else to do it or even look into laminate as it is a big job and a PITA. i think my broo and I spent about $600 on paint for our 2 cabinets and about 5 days as sanding and adding 4 prime coats has to be done on different days.

good luck

Flipper would you like me "distort" the picture of the guy in future drawings so people can concentrate on your tank critique rather than commenting on your biggest loser campaign?

Definitely get someone to do the panels and painting. The beauty is I dont need to do that part until last.
Shannon, just put a picture of a pig in its place- similar size and no hair as well

It will be viewable from 3 sides so we can look at it from the kitchen, dining, lounge.
The biggest challenge will be to get it up 7 floors in a lift. I will start a recruitment drive as time gets closer

Well it didnt take long to hit a snag in this project. Everything looked good from the plans except for one thing. The tank stand was not going to fit through the door :konk: :konk: So after some advice it was decided that the only way it could be done it to make the stand out of wood. The stand would have to be temporarily made up somewhere to make sure all is well then dismantled and then rebuilt inside our apartment. Although a pain its not that much of a drama, says he who has no idea how to do it.
Stayed tuned

What about building it in parts and bolting/slotting them together?

:withyou: get a stand prefabbed out of RHS and then bolt the components together. It'll be the same as wood, only about a million times stronger if you do it right...

Its just the stand that wont fit and no matter how I look at it the bolt heads will stick out making it hardto add the panels after. The stand will be made out of 75x75mm square pieces.

My stand and sides came in parts. Go metal if you can, although in the end it doesn't really matter I guess.

Yeah, also a big benefit of metal is the fact once you assemble and test it, you can re-assemble it upstairs without any ill effects. Whereas undoing a wooden frame and then re-screwing into holes already made will make a wood stand significantly weaker you'd imagine. Dunno if this'd hold true, but just talking from my experience in the past with various bits and pieces. Metal does not change size when you join pieces together with bolts, whereas wood does.

Hope that made sense, hard to describe.

Thanks guys for the advice. The next bit is to work out how to clad it with the bolt heads sticking out. Rods suggestion was to just pack it out

I reckon its a great idea.
Build it on site.
Nice and easy to clad, eaiser to fit doors to, doesnt rot if the right timber is used.
Lukey, I guess they dont have any good carpenters in NSW then? lol

Actually to avoid bolt heads sticking out, make the hole the radius of the bold minus the thread. Get a threading kit and thread the metal, and use the frame as the 'nut'. Then finally use and angle grinder (or hacksaw) to cut off the excess bolt!

You'd have to do it so that the bolt heads point inwards and that the side with the bolt on it would have to be drilled a little larger so that it doesn't get threaded.

Just a thought...

While Im waiting on info about my stand and tank I switched my focus to water circulation. I dont think 2 x mp40s will do the job in such a big tank so my thoughts are:
1. 2x mp40s
2. 2x mp40s at the top of the tank and 2 x mp10s about half way down the tank
3. Same as 2 but replace the 10s with mp40s

Desicions, desicions

Sell the mp40's and get Rod to set up your new tank he will steer you in the right direction. With the money you make from the powerheads im sure you could get one of the flow pumps with the way the dollar is at the moment.Trust me you wont look back with nothing in the tank except coral and fish.Kean

I dont think the money is really an issue when we are talking 2 vortechs already thats over $1000 in pumps, sell them for $400 each and that will pay for one of the circulation pumps. As far as skill goes most of that comes down to the tank builder drilling holes which is not a major problem, then as far as design and set up goes im sure Rod would be more than happy to help out.Go on Flipper do it and make the tank something special.Kean

Nah, I think I will stick with boring. I have more confidence in that way. Its ok to ask people for their help but there is a limit and I dont want to push my luck. If I do it with the vortechs then I know Ive done it
