Keeping the same fish in a closed system for 15+ years (and you don't know how old it was to begin with) is a credit to your dedication and husbandry.

The cycle of life, gents ... funny Old Blue ate like the proverbial pig but in its last few weeks stripped the weight off its frame. Shame, it was so thin at the end.

Some fish just seem to last forever, Macca. 'Blue had seen his 'dark' days many times being laid low with whitespot but always pulled through ... strong constitution ! I reckon that I just had a belligerent old fish with the right attitude ;)

Not dissimilar tot he PJ Cardinal I have - bought in 2001 (OR 2001). No matter what silly mistakes I have made she is still there. Big old goofy thing. Starting to fade in colour, but still got plenty o' meat on her bones.

Working on some upgrades ... as the T5s require tube replacement, I've decided to install LED strips instead.

First one is constructed from this DIY kit : http://www.aquastyleonline.com/products ... e-Kit.html with 4x all blue strips and 60deg optics. Strips are glued to a 25mm black anodised aluminium square tube with all wiring run internally. In testing, it looked very nice ... waiting for a suitable enclosure for the drivers and potentiometers before commissioning in place.

Looks like this :

Looks good Tone.

How do they compare with T5's?

Looking very nice Tone. Are the lenses easy to swap out or do they come integrated with the led?

Haven't run it insitu yet, Rod, but I'd expect that the 24x3W LEDs are going to be better than the single 58W T5 that is replaced. I did do a brief test a few minutes ago before I start to assemble the control enclosure ... very blue and pushes right to the base. Unfortunately one bank isn't working ... done some testing with the multimeter and found a reversed connection; just got to fix that and she'll be good to go.

Slawman, the lenses pop off easily so you can use change them as you wish.

How do you go for colours though Tone? eg Fiji purple, etc.

Also, I know there's massive savings in bulbs, but wont you be using more power?

Rod, 14W more power ;) but the saving in tubes is far greater.

I've gone all blue on this LED strip and it does give a very clear almost electric blue colour even when turned down.

If you dim them to (or ramp up/down) less than 100% then it may end up less power

Of course :) I probably only run them at ~80% otherwise they're very blue.

So, can you get purples etc Tone?

Would be sweet to replace T5's with these.

Purples are available from that source, Rod ... when you do your order it gives you the option to choose your LEDs.

Have to turn them down a bit more as a branch of my Dallas underneath it RTNd real quick ... down to 50% power now.

Like the new LED strips Tone

One question with running Ozone. How often are you changing your carbon and also how much carbon are you running after your skimmer?

I'm going to be utilising Ozone in my system soon, but just need to sort out the GAC after the skimmer side of things first.

Cheers

Hi Brett, I change GAC when I remember to ... true ... probably every 1 or 2 months as I have a very large reactor tube and i give it a shake up every now and then to break down any pathways. It discharges into a small filter sock to capture any carbon dust. The carbon reactor if fed off the return pump manifold and discharges back into the return pump compartment.

My ozone injects 50mg/hr for 30 mins every 6 hours.

Thanks Tone

I was reading up on it and most of the suggestions are to pass the skimmer discharge over GAC.

I already run a GAC reactor in the sump compartment which returns back to the sump (same setup as you described above), and was going to just keep using that setup with adding more carbon into the reactor. But was unsure of the implications/negative impacts of doing it that way.

Thanks for sharing Tone

:) Brett, since the O3 is injected via the skimmer, there is a much reduced chance of bromide poisoning of the tank ... very little if any O3 will escape via the water passed back into the display.

:) Ryan, the FTS is the same as the previous ones ... soon I'm going to muster the courage to hack up the left side and reduce the LR to low levels ... normally I need to ruminate on the idea for a year or two so its getting close now. Then I'll post a new FTS.

Dallas dropped by a couple of new inmates for me last week ... a Moorish Idol and a Copperband ! Two beautiful specimens !

But WW3 has broken out ... the MI is large so I didn't think that it would attract any attention ... whoa! Dennis, the Sailfin, also large but not as big, has taken a distinct disliking to Molly ... apparently they have been previously acquainted in Dallas' tank, LOL ! Anyway, poor Molly is worse for wear with a couple of tears on one side and a bit stressed out. Lenny (Coppperband) has dealt with his demon, the Mimic, and life is good.

Despite this setback it looks like a peace settlement has been reached and I'm hoping that Molly will make a full recovery ... she's swimming and eating well, chasing down food.

Pics to come when the damage is repaired.

The more established the existing tenant is the more aggressive they seem to be!
